Bush contract demands (per John Clayton)

A friend told me that ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that Reggie Bush is seeking an increase from what last year's top pick, QB Alex Smith, got. This has caused the team to look at Mario Williams for the top pick. Of course, the most likely reason for the Mario glance is negotiating leverage to get Bush to come down just a bit from his price.

I will really be happy when April 29 finally rolls around...

I really wouldn't expect him to ASK for any less. He knows he probaly wont get it. Just dont lowball him on the counter offer & it should all work out.

Isn't this what negotiation is?

Bush asks for a price, McNair counters, and they settle in the middle.

Ya really. Bush isn't going to come and ask for a small contract. Then he would not be getting the best contract and the most money he can get. Usually the two teams agree on a deal, usually in between how much the player and how much the team wants to pay.

Did anyone really expect Bush or any other prospect to sit down and say that they will accept a 6 year $30 million contract with out negotiating at all? The player always wants to get as much money as he can and the team wants to pay as little as they can. It is like any other business. The Texans are the buyers and the prospect is the seller.

Bush probably wants 6 yr 50-55 million with a 25 mill signing bonus:cool:

He probably wants that, McNair probably offered $40-45 million, and they will settle somewhere in between that. McNair wants Bush and Bush wants to go to the Texans, they will get it done.

Anyone know of a good web site with the 1st pick contract data over the last decade? It would be interesting to know how often the size of the contract has decreased from one year to the next ....

Bush is considered a lot better player, so therefore he should get a bump bigger than the normal increase the #1 gets from the previous year.

The 6 yr north of $55 million sounds about right. Not sure about that signing bonus though. I think a little more than half of that will be guaranteed.

Yeah but the question begs to be asked ...if an all pro gaurd arguably the best
left gaurd in football can comand fifty million, what's a RB who's supposed to be the next coming of {pick your icon} going to be worth? Mind boggeling. I hope
Uncle McNair had all the nickles rolled up.

When do you think will negotiations (at least those known to the public) will begin?

I think there usually isn't a decrease, something very unusual.

Especially since there is a new CBA with a higher cap, and Bush is considered more valueable than Alex Smith, this contract will be out of sight.

He is a once in a generation back and you have to pay for that.

I wouldn't be surprised if they already have started in some form.

He'll get in the neighborhood of $25 million guaranteed but it won't be all signing bonus. Some will be signing bonus and some will be roster bonuses in future years, so it won't all be payable in '06. That's how Smith's deal was structured.

Does anybody know how much he will make in endorsements???
Does he have a shoe deal yet???

I read he is talking with Addidas and something like $20 million over 4 years or something. I think he needs to be drafted #1 first so the hype meets with the marketing campaign they want.

A once in a generation back who has not shown the ability to run inside consitently, get the short yardage and be the workhorse. Yes, he has the talent, but he has WAY to many question marks to be considered a sure thing. Alex Smith was a QB, so were the last 6 #1 picks. Reggie should not get more then Alex Smith, simply because of the position he plays and some of the very important question marks around his game.

ADDIDAS???? im surprised NIKE isnt jumping all over this kid...I really dont think football when you say Addidas.....

I say that if Reggie Bush is all he's annointed to be, the Texans should just pay him by the yard.

Seriously, I'd like to see some lofty incentive clauses. Just to see if he can do it.

I think you are right about the QB position vs. RB position. But, take into account all of this hype.

Also, this is best opportunity for Reggie Bush to get a max contract. It is extremely difficult for a running back to get that max contract later in his career even if he is a proven pro bowler. Think about James and Alexander.

It makes sense for him to go for the whole enchilada.

Then Reggie needs to get Master P and his guys to negotiate a contract just like the one they did for Ricky Williams.

I really like Reggie, but I don't think you pay him like a #1 QB. Plus I think McNair is going to be a little tuffer in the negotiations. He want's a player that's going to help the team win and put fans in the stands, but he want's to make sure he's getting his money's worth and not over spend.

Our best leverage may be what he can make in endorsements. If he isn't careful he could squander a lot of money by not being the number 1 pick. A bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush.

I think getting a contract before the draft won't happen.

This thing is going to played like the final round of the World Series of Poker.

Or, maybe just like how the new CBA went through, at the very last minute when you think nothing will get done.

There is too much on the line for both sides.

Are you people serious? Some of you make me laugh, seriously. He is the "best prospect in the past 20 years", "he's the next Marshall Faulk", "he reminds people of Gayle Sayers". You get my point? Why should he settle for less when all of this praise is placed upon him. I say give him whatever he wants. He deserves it, right?

The Negotions start at what the #1 pick got last year and then add some. What was Alex Smith contract like last year.

The reason that Benson held out was he was wanting more than the previous years #4 pick. Who happen to be P.Rivers who was traded for the #1 Pick Manning and was paid a premium.

It does not matter who the #1 pick is they will want more than last years #1. Yes including Vince Young.

No one will do the incentive contract, after Ricky Williams tried it and it has been a diaster. The only reason he is playing now, is that he can not afford not to play. Well at least be suspended and get credit for a year.

There it is. I couldn't agree more.

I remember Clinto Portis signing a pretty big contract a couple years back. He will prolly get that kind of money.

Unfortunately no, I have wanted to find such a site for a while now, but it seems that official terms of most deals are kept pretty quiet so it's hard to find concrete info on multiple contracts like that in one place.

i really don't care about the numbers part of the contract so long as it's a 6+ yr deal...and that it's done before training camp

I think Reggie signed with Adidas because Reebok has been big in NFL merchandise over the last few years, and Adidas just bought Reebok.

I also think that Reggie will shoot for the moon, and McNair is just blowing some smoke by visiting with Mario. They'll get a deal done early. Bush's marketing reputation cannot suffer some sort of holdout hit.

And finally, how about this thought (totally off topic for a thread started by yours truly) - The high school where Reggie Bush and Alex Smith must be pretty freaking jazzed. If Bush is picked, that's two No. 1 NFL draft picks in consecutive years from the same high school. What are the odds?

Yeah, I wouldn't be too surprised if it nets their coach some offers from some Universities.

The fact that proven pro bowlers can't get big contracts is perhaps the reason that people are hesitant to give Reggie the mother load contract. RB is a position that is reasonably low rent in the league now. I am not sure you want to mortgage the farm to get one. I would rather spend that money elsewhere.

Here is the Franchise player amounts to help us get an idea of what positions are worth...
Quarterback $6.926 million
Defensive end $5.390 million
Defensive tackle $5.084 million
Linebacker $4.762 million
Offensive line $4.509 million
Running back $4.222 million
Cornerback $4.179 million
Wide receiver $3.856 million
Safety $3.223 million
Tight end $2.107 million
Kicker-punter $1.093 million

Every pick get a raise from last year draftee slot, especially number 1. Endorsements have nothing to do with what the Texans are going to pay him. It 's like your current employer paying you less because you could always get a second job elsewhere.

Give him a few million more then last years pick, and lets get him signed before the draft.
