Looking back to 2002 do y'all feel that the Texans did the best possible job, give or take a few dissapointments, that could realisticly be expected? For instance taking a QB (David Carr) 1st then building the team around him or will he survive this strategy?

I could not help but notice that the 49ers drafting 1st 2005 selected a QB (Alex Smith) then his center for the next ten years with 2nd rd pick (David Baas) seems like pretty sound thinking :hmmm:
 
That is a nice theory. How many times has it been practiced? I would not imagine that too many QB/C combinations play together for 10 years.

Bass is probably going to play Guard. Jeremy Newberry will start at Center.

your probably right Newberry is a good one. Eric Heitmann was a 7th rd pick in the 2002 draft and is from Katy Texas. Justin Smiley was their 2nd rd pick last year & seems like a good young drive blocker. with the addition of Baas sounds like the makings of a good young offensive line which returning to the theory of building a franchise around a 1st pick QB does this not supprort a case for the prudent way to build or rebuild in this case?
 
You build with talent. Carr was talented so they took him first. If he wasn't 'all that' we would probably be looking at B McKinney at LT and Banks as our QB with Ragone backing him up.

So exactly what are Jab Gaffney's times in the 40?
 
I think Charles Hill was a bad pick.. but not for the obvious reasons.. but because we "strayed" from our plan and didnt draft just offense in the top rounds.

I dunno if they jumped the gun.. thinking they could get a young playmaker on defense early.. or if they just tried to draft BPA..

but with the 18th pick.. if they had stuck to a "draft offense" philosophy.. they could have grabbed Center Seth McKinney, or RB Brian Westbrook..

Of course.. hindsight is 20/20.. but had we stuck to an all offense policy.. our chances of getting one of these two is pretty good..

but oh well.. all in all im happy with what we have done.. and I think we have built a very strong foundation.

we also could of had Carr and Clinton Portis if we went all offence. I believe the Broncos took him in the second round that year.

according to the draft site that I have.. we never drafted Martin Bibla in the 4th.

lemme see if someone else drafted him... maybe its a typo...

yah.. the Falcons drafted Martin Bibla with the 18th pick in the 4th round, 2002.
 
when you look at our drafts compared to drafts of other teams we have done really well...yes we have had a couple of dissapointments like charles hill and bennie joppru and some can argue that we wasted a 5th rounder on vontez duff who was like the first guy we cut that season...but to me besides hill and joppru we really haven't had that many bad picks...i mean carr, johnson, robinson, babin, and johnson will be our cornerstones for years to come...only if those people aren't in the game plan has casserly blown something draftwise...in my mind 1st rounders are the only true way to tell how good our scouting staff is...now if you look at all the other rounds we've drafted in we've had some good surprises like: davis, faggins, c. anderson, pitts, and peek...we've had some bad breaks like joppru, weary, hollings, and hill...everything basically evens out

i think for the most part we've had a lot better drafts than some of the other new clubs like the browns and better drafts than some of the older clubs like the cards...so casserly is doing a great job...we just need everyone else to step it on up
 
ya but look at the numbers portis produced once he left the friendly enclave of denver.

343 carries for 1315 yards 5 touchdowns
40 catches 235 yards 2 touchdowns

total 383 touches 1550 yards 7 touchdowns...

doesn't sound bad but they did give him a 50 million dollar contract... look at DD's numbers last year

302 carries for 1188 yards and 13 touchdowns
68 receptions for 588 yards and 2 touchdowns

total 370 touches for 1776 yards and 15 touchdowns..



i mean got lucky he went to denver as an average 2nd round back, put up consecutive 1500 yard numbers which is what Davis would do in that offense... then parlayed that into 50 mil from Washington and had by far his worst year to date. still had a decent year but definately not what Snyder paid 50 mil for.

We traded that pick to the Falcons during the draft for their 2003 3rd rounder and is the reason we had two 3rd round picks in 2003 - and I believe we turned that selection into Dave Ragone. Peek was our other 3rd round selection that year..
 
To put this in it's proper perspective, it should be noted that the thread author ( :crying: ) gets an annual redass because the front office doesn't select HIS picks in the draft each year. :neener:

Actually we had 3 3rd's that year-Peek, Wand, Ragone (in that order). Our very next pick, #4 of round4, was DD.
