Build A Te

If you could build the perfect TE for the Texans what make-up would you create? things like resonable speed, height, strength, wingspan, hands, blocking, intelligence and anything else you can think of.

I don't know how many of y'all remember Russ Francis (dubb'ed All World by HC) but that guy was amazing even if it was an abbreviated career. Most of us here know that this is a serious issue for the Texans and created from BJ's misfortune. Of the current TE's few mention the name Alge Crumpler, but he is the type of TE that not only feeds the QB with an outlet but excells in blocking schemes @ the line and down the field in blocking assignments. he was a 2nd round pick (35th overall in 2001) and stands 6'2" 262 out of N.C.

Of the College prospects most similar to him is Tim Day out of Oregon. He is a Senior @ 6'4" 265lbs. he has ideal size, thrives on blocking (former guard) has good speed (won't know exactly until the combine, but guessing I'd say less than 4.7) and with soft basketball hands (3rd on the team in receptions with almost 500 yds and 8 TD's). if he is available in the 2nd round he could be a viable, excellent selection by Casserly

thats good stuff Vinny, but is there anything in regards to blocking stats? it really should not be this difficult to identify all around prospects but the stats just don't always represent a true picture. sure Day is on that list but of those prospects how do you determine which excell in other aspects of the position? I shall take a close look at this list, I beleive it to be very complete. for instance I've heard that Joe Newton is a fearless blocker and possible 1st round pick, Mercedes Lewis could be a top 10 pick showing by example how to use a TE to carry an offense etc. etc. etc......

the one thing we all agree on is the offensive line needs upgrading, including the TE position (through no fault of their own). now we have to figure out what to do this season

I like what little I've seen of Fasano. He seems like an excellent team guy, and he can make the tough catches. He's got the size to be a force as a blocker, but not sure if he's a great blocker now or not. I love Klopfenstein's name. Just imagine the signs for him you'd see in the stands.

Joe Newton was awesome in the few games I saw Oregon State play last year. If I had to pick a tight end for the Texans out of Vinny's list, then I would pick Newton.

#1 recent years have been thin @ TE & the Texans have suffered back luck

#2 2006 draft promises & outstanding group, meaning that in the 2nd round a team who NEEDS this position filled could still get a quality NFL TE prospect.

#3 simply put its the most glaring hole on the Texans team

I'd start with Bristol Olomua, then tell him to play like Welker. That's it.

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State tight end Joe Newton is out indefinitely after an MRI showed soft tissue damage in his lower left leg, coach Mike Riley said.

The 6-foot-7, 258-pound junior was expected to be a key to the Beavers' offense this season. He is being evaluated as to the best course of action for him, Riley said Wednesday.

Newton, an Oregon prep standout from Roseburg, has eight career touchdown receptions, just one shy of the Oregon State record for tight ends set by Tim Euhus (2000-03).

In last year's victory over Notre Dame in the Insight Bowl, Newton had seven catches for 85 yards and two scores. Overall, he scored seven touchdowns, tying him with for team-best with receiver Mike Hass.

"We don't know exactly when he'll be back, but I know it won't be soon. All we really know is that it is a soft-tissue injury to the lower leg, so it is not a broken bone or a joint," Riley said. "It is a muscle down there that needs to be repaired or rehabbed."

My short list goes like this,
Mecedes Lewis, the most lethal receiving coming out of the draft this year and is a decengt blocker with a frame to put on more weight and become a better blocker, 6'6 but only 255 could easily be 265.

Dominique Byrd, very good hands and blocking ability and nice speed to stretch the field

Tim Day, once again good hands and blocking, very strong but not very fast.

That's too bad, he was one of the players I was looking forward to following. Good news is Newton's only a junior so he will probably stay for his senior year and be an even bigger stud.

i think hands down our biggest need is ol help.

as things stand now the te position just took a serious back step. 3-5 step drops and timeing routes dont tend to allow te's an oppurtunity to get open often.

i expect our te only to contribute in the red zone and against a cover 2 until we can get our ol squared away.
