So the question becomes:
1) No AJ
2) No Meyers
3) + Hoyer
4) + Second place/div schedule (instead of 2-14 schedule)
Does this team go 9-7 or better?
I hate to say it, but I'd lay odds against it.
OYE!
Not a fan at all of wasting money on Hoyer.
Wait to see the guarantees before you pass judgment. Right now we have Mallett and Hoyer for less than what the browns paid for McCown.

So, we're hiring all of the Brady backups? Are our QBs gonna be called The Brady Bunch now?

What if Mallet sucks, or if he gets hurt for a string of games? Having a solid back up is a nice luxury to have. And Hoyer is a great back up.
I think we could win several games with Hoyer possibly. Especially if we get him some help. We can't win any SB's with what we got, but it's the best alternative I've seen that we have, and this way we have two options back there at QB at least and some better depth than what we had last year.
Stop using common sense here! It is neither warranted or needed.
Its kind of confusing what Bob is thinking. He seems so noncommittal. Im curious what he tells both Mallet and Hoyer? All out QB battle and they are both OK with it? I'd think either one could possibly land a starting gig somewhere. Wierd.

the reason they are both okay with this arrangement is that, they WERE NOT being given a better chance at starting.
Hoyer wanted to be at place where he had a legit starting chance. I think he has that here at least to compete for the job. He knows what Mallet has as well being on the same team, so he might feel confident that he can out play him. The same goes for Mallet, and Mallet already had a jump on him after being here for a season and getting some playing time. They both probably feel like this is one of their better chances to start.
From OB's perspective, we now have two options to go into camp to compete for the job. Both are guys he has coached before and is familiar with. If Mallet wins the job and stinks it up, Hoyer is a nice 2nd option in my opinion and in OB's obviously. Maybe then, Hoyer gets hot for a while. It is at least possible. Or if Mallet gets hurt, we still have a competent back up who can come in and make the season interesting still.
With OB's options currently, I think this was one of the best scenarios we could have ended up with. He is probably hoping that Mallet can turn into a big time QB, and if not he and Hoyer should be good enough to keep the team competitive while the search for franchise QB continues into next year.

I'm not completely sure about that.
I like Hoyer, I think he'll be the starter now. I just thought that we had committed to Mallet and all the talk was that we were going to give him a real shot. Then this left field stuff.
I'm thinking OB played Jedi Mindtricks on them & have them thinking we've got a real shot at the play offs. With our only competition for these "signal callers" being the Jets...
We've got a better shot than the Jets do for winning our division, but after that we're all wild cards & I wouldn't count the Jets out any more than us.
I don't think that many like Hoyer, but OB seems pretty comfortable with him. He coached him a few years ago, and maybe he can have a better effect on Hoyer. Based on the Texans approach to Mallet, it tells me that they weren't exactly star struck by his performance from last season in games and at practice, but still believe that he has big potential. They probably figure that bringing in both guys to battle it out will bring out the best in them through competition. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoyer win that competition at all.

So the Texans end up with the #1 & #2 QB's in free agency? I thought they were a QB away from the playoffs last year so this has to be a good thing.
All the lists I saw had Hoyer at something like the #6 and Mallett at #8
I don't know. I heard they were offered more money with the Jets. At least, I believe Mallett was.
Really there were only like 4 QB FA i can even think of. Hoyer and Mallet being 2 of the bigger ones which i know is odd.
Quarterbacks
1. Mark Sanchez (Re-signed 2-year, $9M deal with PHI)
2. Jake Locker
3. Josh McCown (Signed 3-year, $14M deal with CLE)
4. Brian Hoyer (Agreed to multi-year deal with HOU)
5. Matt Moore
6. Ryan Mallett (Re-signed 2-year, $7M deal with HOU)
7. Christian Ponder
8. Tarvaris Jackson
9. Shaun Hill
10. Michael Vick
Jets are going to be looking up at Miami and Buffalo, to say nothing of NE. They won't sniff wild card in 2015
I'm not completely sure about that.
Walterfootball has Mallett as #2 behind Locker with Hoyer at #5.
Whatever.
We got the guy we wanted and another guy that was at least ranked as one of the top guys, even if we have mixed feelings about him.
What the heck have people seen in Locker to have him ranked higher than a ham sandwich and a twinkie?
I don't really get it. OTOH, Mallett hasn't shown that much, either.
