Brian Gaine promoted to Director of Player Personnel

Rick Smith has to find a replacement for Maccagnan now that he's secured Gaine for at least another season.

Rick Smith said last week he didn't want to lose Gaine and Mike Maccagnan, who's the Jets new GM. Gaine interviewed with Bears and Eagles.

Sports Radio 610 first reported Gaine's promotion. He interviewed with Eagles Chip Kelly last week for GM job but is staying with Texans.

Texans GM Rick Smith has promoted pro personnel director Brian Gaine to director of player personnel. Gaine gets new contact and raise.

Looks like Rick created a new position/title.

Irrrelevant. On this MB, any good personnel move will be credited to Gaine, and any failed personnel move will still be Rick Smith's fault.

Until a year or so have passed and then Gaine will become the new most hated

semantics... for all intents and purposes, Gaine is now the GM

Actually, the duties of a typical GM have been split between Gaine, who is excellent in identifying personnel and Smith, who is excellent at the contract and budget side of the job. I'm hopeful this will place each in the position to excel at what he does best.

This should make an interesting draft room. I suspect they expect a consensus model to determine their course of action with Bob stepping in to settle irreconcilable differences (Hopefully non existent or at least rare) as he always has.

I don't understand why Gaines would stay. He could be the man in Philly. Instead he is working for a man who answers to the man.

I can't imagine how much they would have to offer for me to accept a lesser job.

He would be GM in name only in Philly. Chip Kelly would have more control over personnel. He would report to Chip.

Is Brian Gaine a werewolf or a vampire? Because depending on what he is, he could be making different decisions.

yep Rick got his promotion- From the official website

Rick Smith Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager

Chris Olsen Vice President, Football Administration- (Cap dude)

Brian Gaine's title not updated yet

Pretty sure that's been his title for a few years, now.

Not sure why folks are assuming Smith will be any less involved in the draft/player acquisition.

Yep, this is a one year situation. Gaine will be a GM of an NFL organization a year from now... either Texans or somewhere else, imo.

Rick's title hasn't changed.

Regarding Gaine I believe this will be the case.

Hopefully Gaine/BOB will be the decision makers on the personel decisions. If this happens the Texans future will be in great hands. I'm a big fan of Gaine and haven't been this excited about the future of the Texans since Kubiak was hired.

Is this why we have been up against the cap for the past 4 off seasons ?

Like many jobs, the desire is not to have less money spent as much as it is to spend the budgeted amount wisely. While Rick has been hampered by poor medical advice and not changing that situation is certainly a valid criticism, the budgeting and contract side has been very good , if not elite.

I suspect he has obtained and retained those identified by others as the guys they want, whether it be the coaches or the owner. The identification of the players is the point of most criticism and I don't think that is his forte or even responsibility under this front office arrangement.

I'm just glad we have someone new to blame when our draft picks aren't imediate Allstars.

No. In an earlier post is was pointed out that Rick will get the blame for bad personnel decisions and Gain will get the credit for good personnel decisions.

This will be the case for a few years at least.

I think that we still have a few more years of roster turnover where Kubiak can be blamed as well.

Agreed. To me it sounds like instead of replacing Maccagan, they've added his duties to Gaines' responsibilities. Smith is still the GM, Smith will continue to run the draft.

That Rick Smith is doing a heck of a job. After all as a leader of the franchise he bears no responsibility for 2-14. (Sarcasm////)

Hopefully irrelevant. I would not be against a promotion that pays better, but less involved in operations. The last draft was absolutely atrocious.

But according to Marshall Smith has nothing to do with this. So change may very well be on the way. Or atleast one can hope.

Did you say that within the week after the draft?

The reaction overall was much better this year than most. Now hindsight is kicking in hard.

And that's why I'm not making football decisions. The GM is theoretically supposed to see past all the hype and evaluate players objectively.

Why should he get the blame for 2-14 when he got no credit for 12-4? He is either responsible for both or neither. I suspect neither. But I make no claim to insider information. It is just a suspicion based on who remains and who is gone.

I'm sure he is somewhat responsible for both! How much, I don't know, and neither does anyone else on this board!

So a Director of Player Personnel, makes more money than a Player personnel director........check

Director of Pro Personnel -- job is to know every relevant player in the league who can possibly become available in any capacity and help his team. The Pro Director can make the difference of a team making the playoffs, having solid back-ups, and making sure that the bottom half of the roster is competitive and can fill in when a star player is hurt.

Director of Player Personnel -- Add in scouting college players and involvement in the draft, negotiating contracts and advance scouting.

There's overlap in different areas within different organizations, but I get the feeling Gaine's promotion included Maccagnan's responsibilities. It's the highest position title a team can give that allows for refusal to grant interviews for any position below GM.

As for pay, it would be interesting to see what the variance is between teams for ~same positions.

He should get credit.

Even though I expect better the playoffs blowout losses regardless of a 12-4 regular season. Maybe I expect too much. Obviously more than the McNair's do.

Are the Colts a badly coached and managed team?

They've been blown out of the playoffs by over 20 ppg coincidentally by the same teams that have knocked the Texans out of the playoffs by 10 ppg.

Or is it all on Luck as a QB "who will never win a SB?"

He fired the HC in the middle of the season, literally days after having a stroke on the field.

Texans name Gaine Director of Player Personnel, Carr Director of College Scouting

HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have promoted Brian Gaine to director of player personnel and Jon Carr to director of college scouting, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rick Smith announced today.

Gaine joined the Texans in February 2014 as the director of pro personnel following a five-year tenure with the Miami Dolphins’ player personnel department, last serving as assistant general manager from 2012-13. As the director of player personnel, Gaine will work with Smith on all player personnel evaluations and continue to lead all pro scouting department operations, which include all pro player evaluation, the advance scouting process, free agency and the monitoring of player transactional movement in all professional leagues.

Gaine, who will be entering his 17th season in the NFL in 2015, has also worked in the scouting department for the Dallas Cowboys (2005-07) and New York Jets (1999-04), rising to assistant director of pro scouting with both organizations. The former University of Maine tight end played on the practice squad for the Jets and New York Giants prior to embarking on his career in player personnel.

Carr, who is replacing Mike Maccagnan as the Texans director of college scouting, has served as a national college scout for the Texans the past three seasons and will enter his ninth year with the organization in 2015. As director of college scouting, Carr will coordinate all of the Texans’ college scouting efforts and will also be involved with evaluating NFL teams and prospects in preparation for roster reductions during training camp and NFL free agency.

Carr originally joined the Texans as a college scout in 2007 and was promoted to national scout in 2012. He enjoyed several stints coaching in the collegiate ranks, beginning with five seasons at Tennessee State (1997-01) before moving to Eastern Illinois (2003-04) and Toledo (2005-06). Carr played collegiately at Southeast Missouri State from 1987-89 before transferring to Purdue, where he earned his degree in law and society in 1991.

The Texans have also hired Matt Jansen as college scouting coordinator. Jansen, a Texas Tech graduate, worked as a defensive assistant while in college. He interned in the Texans scouting department from 2011-13 before joining the Baltimore Ravens as a player personnel assistant from 2013-14.

So Carr is in his ~mid 40s.

So the guy who had a large roll in the 2012/2013/2014 drafts got a promotion? In the real world when you **** up at your job you get fired, in the NFL you get promoted.

what gives you the idea that he had a large role?

And we all (or most of us anyway) thought the '14 draft was going to be an excellent one, nobody foresaw the injury bug hitting like it did

Mike Martin Deserving of Promotion in Houston

One of the most improved teams in the NFL this past season was the Houston Texans. Their seven-win improvement was a team effort with huge contributions coming from the scouting staff as well as the new coaches. One of the assets in the Texans turnaround was a strong front office and scouting staff led by general manager Rick Smith.

Houston's director of college scouting, Mike Maccagnan, was hired away by the New York Jets to be their new general manager. Also, assistant general manager Brian Gaine is a finalist for the Philadelphia Eagles general manager job. Fortunately for the Texans, they have an in-house scouting star to replace Maccagnan in southeast area scout Mike Martin.

Martin is held in high regard and viewed as one of the best college scouts in the league. He was the scout who helped lead the way for the Texans to sign Arian Foster as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He also was part of Houston targeting Duane Brown late in the first round, a long-term left tackle, and a starting cornerback in Kareem Jackson.

In the past two years, the Texans have leaned heavily on Martin in drafting three young talented starters from his territory, including wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, safety D.J. Swearinger, and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The Texans also depended on Martin for some late-round and undrafted free agent steals last offseason with running back Alfred Blue, fullback Jay Prosch, cornerback A.J. Bouye and cornerback Andre Hal.

Martin has led a Texans scouting staff that also hit on the best defensive player in the NFL in J.J. Watt, and you could make a strong argument that Watt is the best player in the league at any position. Some other good picks they made like Glover Quin and Connor Barwin left the team because of salary-cap limitations. Those moves helped Maccagnan's resume in landing the Jets' general manager position.

With Maccagnan in New York, it would make sense for Martin to be promoted to the director of college scouting before another team swipes Martin away from the Texans. Front-office changes are rampant across the league, and Martin is on the radar. With the opening of their college scouting position, Houston has an opportunity to maintain possession of one of the best talent evaluators in the business and keep Martin to help maintain the rebuilding of the Texans.

Pat O'Hara Headed to Houston Texans

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that Director of Player Personnel Pat O'Hara will leave the organization in order to pursue an opportunity with the National Football League's Houston Texans.

"I would like to thank Pat for his services during the short time that he was here," Sharks head coach Les Moss said. "He has been a friend of mine for the past 20 years, and I wish him nothing but the best in what is a tremendous opportunity for him and his family."

"I want to thank Coach Moss and the Sharks organization for bringing me on to the Jacksonville staff,' O'Hara said. "I am so grateful for these past couple of months, and it's bittersweet because of the team that has been assembled. I can't think of another organization or head coach in the AFL that I would want to work for, and I'm humbled and thankful for everything."

O'Hara joined the Sharks' front office as Director of Player Personnel in October of 2014. Prior to his time with the Sharks, O'Hara enjoyed a lengthy Arena Football League career that included multiple ArenaBowl championships as a player, as well as stints as head coach of the New Orleans VooDoo and Orlando Predators.
