He still promoted Bill O'Brien to GM after a historical playoff choke. That was barely a year ago, btw.

He also signed off on one of the NFL's dumbest trades right after promoting O'Brien, in addition to giving Watson a contract that is ultimately detrimental to his franchise.

He might have finally made a good decision with Caserio. But let's be honest here: he was really just following through with something Bob McNair had started in January 2018. But, time will tell on that one.

That said, I'll give Cal the benefit of the doubt for now. If he really has learned to stay out of the way and let Caserio run his organization, for better or for worse, I'll revise my thoughts.

It still doesn't change the fact that Cal was sitting in a bare room at Reliant Stadium playing video games while the adults around him built a football franchise. lol :heh:
Hey.....hey....hey, that young man (43 years old) was working diligently in making the Texans an absolute dynasty on Madden Football.

But isn’t playing video games about as hands off as one can be?

Yeah, I'm just having fun with it. Hopefully all of this is just a learning curve for Cal and he picked the right guy to run his franchise with Caserio. That's the best we can hope for at this point.

p.s. if I'm Cal, I'd be hooking up a PS5 to that NRG jumbotron at least once! lol :gamer: I'd assume he's got that kind of power

PS5, screw that noise. If I’m Cal I’d build, or in Cal’s case have built, the most bleeding edge gaming PC known to man and hook that up.

Depends.....was Chuck Berry's "Playing With My Ding-A-Ling" blaring in the background?
Side story: I worked for a sound company in the 1980's that provided a specific type of amp for Chuck Berry shows in this region. I often accompanied these amps when they were rented out, and I once heard a 30+ minute version of that song by a very drunk Chuck Berry with some very NSFW lyrics! It was great! :heh:

I think Cal was just trying to ride the storm out with BOB until he could hire Caserio and it blew up in his face.

Yeah, I figure he gave O'Brien some latitude, especially considering it was the last head coach his dad had hired. I can't fault Cal for loyalty. It was obviously a mistake, but it is what it is. Hopefully Cal has learned some valuable lessons that he can avoid in the future.

It's really too bad that the Texans did not pursue the Caserio hire when they were accused of tampering. I've read since then that they probably could have won the case because the Patriots position was ultimately wrong. There is no telling what this team would look like if O'Brien had Caserio as GM.

Honestly, this Watson situation has me feeling a bit empathetic for Cal. This is a story beyond just running a football team.

Yep, Funny thing is if Cal had fought for Caserio, BOB probably would be the HC of the Texans today.

I dont feel empathetic for Cal at all. He knew SOME of this was going on, it's why Hopkins was traded. He should've traded DW4 when he trade Hopkins and cleaned house of the trash, then let Caserio start the rebuild. Instead Cal chose $$$$ over doing the right thing and like all things Texans with this philosophy since their inception, these 2 decisions bit him in the azz.

I dont think they're going to be able to trade DW4 (Certainly not before this draft) and probably never since DW4 is probably going to jail. So the Texans franchise is currently in worse shape than they were before the expansion draft and having the Carr 1-1 pick.

Great job Cal.

Yeah, when I say empathetic, I mean in the way of just trying to understand the perspective of another person.

Maybe the guy has been living in a bubble of sorts, and I understand that could all be on him. But, going back to that Rosenfels video game story, did Bob McNair know his boy was doing this? Why wasn't Cal more involved? Dude is not stupid. I mean, I'd assume Rice doesn't give out masters degrees for making a donation.

I've had employees screw me and my family out of a lot of money. Multiple people that were trusted like family members. People we helped in their darkest of times. And what did we get in return? Screwed. Not everyone, but enough that it makes you suspicious and jaded.

Now I'm not trying to compare little ol' me to billionaire Cal McNair, but I believe that he's been a little naive and perhaps a little gullible since Bob passed away, and he's trusted people that ultimately proved untrustworthy. I can relate to that part, especially when they end up being the complete opposite of who you thought they were.

Anyway, just food for thought. Sort of a melancholy vibe about the Texans right now, enough to make me empathic for Cal. lol

Heck, tomorrow I might reset and not feel this way at all. ;)

I've had the same things happen to me with family and employees. Thing I try to do is look at it like I gave family money and employees who not only took customers when they left but a coupleof employees too and then went around to my customers and told them they had started up a business and we were to understaffed to serve them. (Which was true because they left) Fortunately most of the customers I contacted I had a good enough relationship to tell them I would have everything back to normal in 3 months and they stuck with me trough these times. I came out with better employees in the long run. (Enough of this tangent.)

On the same level I hope Cal learned to do background work on key employees and main players he's going to be giving out 156 million dollar contracts and such.

I'm saying Cal should be very careful and do background checks before handing out $$$$. Talented but troubled guys are ok to have on the team. In fact I'm for this. But the big $$$$ guys have to not be doing stuff like this if they want to get paid.

So draft the Tyreek Hill & Marcus Peters of the world... but once their rookie contract expires, let them go?

Essentially yes, unless during those 4-5 yrs they prove to be reliable human beings.

The QB position is even more challenging due to how much cap space they will eat up after their rookie deals. You can structure contracts so that you can compete for championship's for 7 yrs after a QB is drafted.

It's basically impossible to have predicted this behavior from Watson. He has done nothing in his past to prove he isn't a reliable human being.

Probably why there’s a mad rush of players & former coaches rushing to his defense.

I mean, you’re right. No way any of us could have predicted Watson would even be in a situation where he would be accused of what he’s being accused of.

But somebody should have & the crickets we’re hearing speaks volumes. IMO. & believe me when I say I want him to get past this, make up with the Texans & be our QB for the next 10 years.

He was running the hoes with Hopkins.

This was totally predictable, although not to this degree.

He's an idiot and you cant trust an idiot. Truth is he got paid and thought he was king for a day. How the mighty have fallen and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Unlike most on here I dont care about trading DW4 for draft picks. I just want this POS gone.

You know, 6 months ago I would have gone back and forth with you over this but not anymore. Its a well known fact (around here) that I have followed Watson since his Clemson days and was ecstatic that we drafted him, but I’m no blind fanboy. I know all 22 cases might not be legit, but nobody can convince me that they’re ALL false accusations. No way in hell. I trust Caserio will do what’s best for you the franchise, and hopefully finds our franchise QB going forward.

BS.... womanizing is in no way indicative of sociopathic behavior.
I'm just very entertained watching the great lengths a few posters are trying to go to to defend DW4. It actually would be a great phsycological case study.

And yes, you can tell alot about a person by who they hangout with.

Stop basking in the sun because you campaigned against dw for years. It's almost time to pat yourself on the back but not just yet. Let the legal process play out and then have your day. I think most folks would agree the dw fiasco is a disaster.

You don't have to gratuitously rub it in. Guys like me partially agreed. Just don't strut.

I'm not rubbing it in or patting myself on the back, DW4's just a sicko regardless of whether he's convicted of a crime or not. Yet some are actually advocating that this pervert remain the QB on Kirby. I cant figure out who's sicker, DW4 or fans that want him to remain the Texans QB.

So just to be clear... you're ok with guys that beat women like Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill? But making women touch his privates is where you cross the line?

On the record, I'm not ok with any of it, but I'm willing to wait for the process to pan out before judging DW.

But you still don't.
Reading through that stuff proves there's a pattern and DW4's a perv regardless of whether there's a conviction or not. The I did nothing wrong but I had consentual sex routine of DW4 is laughable. You're right I dont know but I cant wait for the hammer to fall on this arrogant POS that uses his position of power to intimidate these women. It would be better if they took all of DW4's money, put him in jail and God'ell suspended him. Maybe then he might humble himself.

I'm not ok with any of it, however I do believe people make mistakes and should be given 2nd chances. Not 22nd chances.

We do have in common really wishing for the entertainment value, that cant wait for the process to play out. I cant wait for Buzbee to lay all of his cards on the table. This should be entertainment gold.

I don’t know what he is guilty of. I don’t give a shtick about “Texans worthy” or “steelBtexans worthy” for that matter.

The kid can play & if he’s not locked up & going to play in this league, I rather he play for the Texans.

Doesn’t mean I condone any of the things he’s accused of. Just like whatever team he does end up playing for is not condoning anything he’s accused of. The Texans may have to finally drop this “holier than thou” bs they got going on & that may be the best thing that could happen.

Let’s play football. Let the cops & DAs & attorney generals handle that legal crap. Let the SJWs cry about what’s fair. Texans need to worry about the on field product.

& whether DW4 can win a championship or not is neither here nor there. Whatever team they field in the near future is way better with 4 than without.

Agreed, but getting lost in all of this is that he doesn’t want to play for the Texans.

Maybe he’s forced to for at least one more year because he’s running out of money, but I think his days as a Texan are pretty much done.
I'm just saying my rathers. I understand there is a big gulf between the Texans and Watson. Heck I don't even know if the Texans want Watson to play for them.

But I believe the team is better with Watson than without & if he's allowed to play in the NFL, I'd rather he play for us.

Funny thing is your post is the SteelB mantra for the past several seasons. "Put the best product on the field, regardless of character issues." But now all of a sudden, guys like DW and Hopkins are not Texans Worthy in his eyes?

Wrong,

I would've held onto Hopkins unless I could've gotten value for him.

Watson is different because 1. I dont think you can win a championship with him. 2 He's not a guy who smokes pot or has alcohol issues. I dont care what players do in their private lives except for the kinds of things DW4's done. At the very least DW4 used his position of power to prey on women, at worst he's a predator on the prowl. I do believe in 2nd chances, I dont believe in 22nd chances. Surely you can see the difference?
