He still promoted Bill O'Brien to GM after a historical playoff choke. That was barely a year ago, btw.

He also signed off on one of the NFL's dumbest trades right after promoting O'Brien, in addition to giving Watson a contract that is ultimately detrimental to his franchise.

He might have finally made a good decision with Caserio. But let's be honest here: he was really just following through with something Bob McNair had started in January 2018. But, time will tell on that one.

That said, I'll give Cal the benefit of the doubt for now. If he really has learned to stay out of the way and let Caserio run his organization, for better or for worse, I'll revise my thoughts.

It still doesn't change the fact that Cal was sitting in a bare room at Reliant Stadium playing video games while the adults around him built a football franchise. lol :heh:
Hey.....hey....hey, that young man (43 years old) was working diligently in making the Texans an absolute dynasty on Madden Football.

But isn’t playing video games about as hands off as one can be?

Yeah, I'm just having fun with it. Hopefully all of this is just a learning curve for Cal and he picked the right guy to run his franchise with Caserio. That's the best we can hope for at this point.

p.s. if I'm Cal, I'd be hooking up a PS5 to that NRG jumbotron at least once! lol :gamer: I'd assume he's got that kind of power

PS5, screw that noise. If I’m Cal I’d build, or in Cal’s case have built, the most bleeding edge gaming PC known to man and hook that up.

Depends.....was Chuck Berry's "Playing With My Ding-A-Ling" blaring in the background?
Side story: I worked for a sound company in the 1980's that provided a specific type of amp for Chuck Berry shows in this region. I often accompanied these amps when they were rented out, and I once heard a 30+ minute version of that song by a very drunk Chuck Berry with some very NSFW lyrics! It was great! :heh:

I think Cal was just trying to ride the storm out with BOB until he could hire Caserio and it blew up in his face.

Yeah, I figure he gave O'Brien some latitude, especially considering it was the last head coach his dad had hired. I can't fault Cal for loyalty. It was obviously a mistake, but it is what it is. Hopefully Cal has learned some valuable lessons that he can avoid in the future.

It's really too bad that the Texans did not pursue the Caserio hire when they were accused of tampering. I've read since then that they probably could have won the case because the Patriots position was ultimately wrong. There is no telling what this team would look like if O'Brien had Caserio as GM.

Honestly, this Watson situation has me feeling a bit empathetic for Cal. This is a story beyond just running a football team.

Yep, Funny thing is if Cal had fought for Caserio, BOB probably would be the HC of the Texans today.

I dont feel empathetic for Cal at all. He knew SOME of this was going on, it's why Hopkins was traded. He should've traded DW4 when he trade Hopkins and cleaned house of the trash, then let Caserio start the rebuild. Instead Cal chose $$$$ over doing the right thing and like all things Texans with this philosophy since their inception, these 2 decisions bit him in the azz.

I dont think they're going to be able to trade DW4 (Certainly not before this draft) and probably never since DW4 is probably going to jail. So the Texans franchise is currently in worse shape than they were before the expansion draft and having the Carr 1-1 pick.

Great job Cal.

Yeah, when I say empathetic, I mean in the way of just trying to understand the perspective of another person.

Maybe the guy has been living in a bubble of sorts, and I understand that could all be on him. But, going back to that Rosenfels video game story, did Bob McNair know his boy was doing this? Why wasn't Cal more involved? Dude is not stupid. I mean, I'd assume Rice doesn't give out masters degrees for making a donation.

I've had employees screw me and my family out of a lot of money. Multiple people that were trusted like family members. People we helped in their darkest of times. And what did we get in return? Screwed. Not everyone, but enough that it makes you suspicious and jaded.

Now I'm not trying to compare little ol' me to billionaire Cal McNair, but I believe that he's been a little naive and perhaps a little gullible since Bob passed away, and he's trusted people that ultimately proved untrustworthy. I can relate to that part, especially when they end up being the complete opposite of who you thought they were.

Anyway, just food for thought. Sort of a melancholy vibe about the Texans right now, enough to make me empathic for Cal. lol

Heck, tomorrow I might reset and not feel this way at all. ;)

I've had the same things happen to me with family and employees. Thing I try to do is look at it like I gave family money and employees who not only took customers when they left but a coupleof employees too and then went around to my customers and told them they had started up a business and we were to understaffed to serve them. (Which was true because they left) Fortunately most of the customers I contacted I had a good enough relationship to tell them I would have everything back to normal in 3 months and they stuck with me trough these times. I came out with better employees in the long run. (Enough of this tangent.)

On the same level I hope Cal learned to do background work on key employees and main players he's going to be giving out 156 million dollar contracts and such.

Just to be clear, you're saying the Texans should steer away from athletes who aren't Texans worthy?

I'm saying Cal should be very careful and do background checks before handing out $$$$. Talented but troubled guys are ok to have on the team. In fact I'm for this. But the big $$$$ guys have to not be doing stuff like this if they want to get paid.

Gotcha... p.o.s. players are good if they're on the cheap. I can get behind that.
