Should we take Branden Albert at the #18 spot? Would he be a good fit for us?

He would be a good pick but doubt he is still there. I like the fact that he has played against an individual talent like Chris Long practice after practice during his time in college. Long brings a lot of technique in his play so Albert has probably seen quite a few 'NFL' moves during his time playing opposite Long at Virginia.

I can't believe the draft is less than a week away. Probably my favorite NFL day other than Opening Day, Titans v Texans weeks, and the Playoffs. This year's offseason is moving along a lot faster than last years...at least it seems that way to me. Next thing you know the Texans are going to be in training camp. This year should be a great year and I love the fact that we seem to have addressed Center pre-draft.

Albert's stock has definitely shot up during the past couple of weeks and some of the mocks on ESPN actually have him going as high as the 5th pick to the Chiefs.

Ive said in the other threads .... I think Albert is the best OL in this draft . I'd be doing backflips if the Texans could land him ..... But I dont see him lasting to 18

Mike Mayock has him going at #5. IMO, I highly doubt that he will go that high, but I also doubt he gets to 18. I suspect we will need to be at about the 11-12 range to have a shot at either Albert or Williams. Would we do that...........not sure, but we all know we need an LT badly.

I wish he would fall to us, but i just don't see it possible.

He is an inch short of proto type size and his arms are a bit short. What he is is the most athletic o-lineman in the draft at that size. He can cover four of the five o-line positions. He moves like a cat. and he burries people on the second level when he executes blocks in space. If he is still on the board at the eighteen you kill yourself tring to get the card up as quickly as you can. No matter who is still on the board, you make the pick.

With him shooting up the draft boards, it gives us at least ONE more chance at Chris Williams. Maybe a team like Chicago, Carolina or Denver will consider him before Williams. Maybe not.

don't forget about New England, in my veiw depending on who is available the most likely to take him early. they like their linemen to be versatile & able to play more than one positon which is Alberts mo.

Chris Williams could fall if what Lance Z says the word on the street about Williams is is true. Lance is pretty darn reliable.

14. Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt
Z-Report Says: Word on the streets is that Williams has a back issue that could cause him to come off of some teams boards. If that is the case, he could fall.

Boy, that's pretty much the definition of bitter-sweet news. I'd like to know what kind of back problems he's having.

Not impressed at all with Albert as a football player...

Don't know if I caught the right highlight, but a zebra don't change it's stripes...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0icShpz5_XI&feature=related

The guy looks lost on the second level and a little soft...

Love the guys athleticism, but he's playing guard in these highlights and he's doing a lot of whiffing and playing patty cake with defenders...Guys he should cream he's not getting kill shots on...

Color me very un-impressed. I hope the Texand don't take this guy.

Looks a little bit better here against Miami : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxgwao29NuE&feature=related

But overall, I'm not really impressed...

Not a very physical player...Will get physical on occasion, but for the most part not a physical guy..

Pass protection is really suspect...REALLY SUSPECT....

Not overly good at making blocks on the second level...Whiffs a lot...not real aggressive...

Don't see how this guy is a good fit for us at all...

Thats true, but I think a more pressing need for Evil England is LB. Their LB corp outside of Thomas is old and brittle. A player like Keith Rivers would be a very good pick for them.

a smart guy on the dolphins board on Albert:
A few months ago I said that Branden Albert might be the best lineman PERIOD in the draft. I've been quiet on the forums for a month or so, checking and double checking and late night film watching and fast forwarding and re-winding and whilst I think Jake Long has the best overall skill set, I think the two linemen with the biggest upside are Jeff otah and Branden Albert. Every time I put on a tape to watch Chris Long, I ended up watching the Cavs on offense because big #71 was just absolutely dominant. Dominant. His mobility for a 6'7 inch, 309lber is phenomenal and at the point of attack....wow. You look at his base; it's perfect, he drives through his knees and his arm use is ridiculous. He was obliterating linebackers and defensive backs at the 2nd level. Against Virginia Tech down at the goal line, he abuses Cam Martin to spring a touchdown, pulls to the right and puts him on his keester. Another play, he pulls to the outside and he drives Xavier Adibi 20 yards down the field before shoving him into the safety and knocking them both on their butts. It was like watching an adult block a child. He slides like a left tackle and he played there twice this past season. I've read a couple of people saying he can play there in the pros and when you see him in pass pro and when you see him in space out in front, watching his feet, I'd have to say that they have a case, although I’d like to see him start his NFL career at his more natural spot. Albert himself thinks his long term future is at left tackle and so does Al Groh and you can see why he was so highly rated on the hard wood; sweet feet. I always think that you don't want a guy who's 6'7 clogging your passing lanes, but I'm telling you, when you concentrate on this kid on every snap......he's just an outstanding player. He's also a great kid, a Hargrave kid which means he's mature and he'll work like a pack horse. And talk about fitting the Sparano mentality, he loves it when teams pound the ball because it allows him to get physical and smack some people on their backs. There's a play that NFL Network ran of his, a little screen pass and the back is racing down the field and you take your eyes off the back and see this 6’7 inch monster out in front, literally signaling for the back to change angles and cut back inside. Astounding. He has good hips and uses his hands very well. I think he'll come off the board early and he's just a phenomenal athlete.
has 'em as the 6th best player in the draft.

I dunno, is Brandon Albert becoming the Reggie Bush of the 2008 NFL Draft ?
Bush was perceived to be a slam-dunk by many as an NFL feature back when
he was relatively untested in that role as a college player. And the perception was so compelling that he "slipped" to #2 overall in the 2006 NFL only because the Texans were so stupid. Right !
But now Albert is being perceived as a valid NFL LT while he has been relatively untested at that position in college. I dunno, deja vu all over again ?

Those YouTube clips show him with a technique issue more than anything. He needs to keep his head on a swivel more. However, in those videos, most of the time the LB that is supposed to be receiving the rail block from Albert at the second level has vacated his spot on a blitz or has already been caught up in the wash. His pass protection is not suspect at all Polo. His pass protection is very good. He has great arm length and keeps his hands inside the shoulders. He mirrors with his feet better than any other OL. He will need to work with run blocking, specifically with drive blocking if he has a DT lined up directly over him as opposed to shading off in say a 3 technique. That will come with time in the NFL as it does with most rookies.

to me its all about the system & coaching that makes him such a natural fit with New England because he will play his natural position LG & swing out to tackle as needed or injurys dictate. versatility is his buzz word for a system that likes to move players around, not just supplant them in one position & leave em there.

I disagree.

The guy looks soft, he looked like he had trouble picking up guys in space, he looked liked he struggled a little bit in pass protection (I saw him get beat badly twice that I can recall).

*edit: Just went back and watched it again, and it's confirmed...The guy is VERY SUSPECT in pass pro...

Technique issues ? I don't think so. If there's one position I know about it's O-line.

If you all are sold on the guy....good....

But it's JMO, that he looks suspect out there...

As a physical specimen he looks to be as good as they come...Big, strong, fast...
The guy looks a little timid to me...

But as a football player I don't even think he was the best on his line...The RG looks to be much more of a Ball player...

Fair enough.

Without looking it up, I believe he only allowed 1 sack on the year. To counter your "in space" argument, I would like to refer you to the screen pass. Watch Mayock's video as well as he was really the first one to bring his name into the first round. He moves very well in space, especially at his size. He does need to do a better job recognizing where the LB is flowing as can be seen by the video. However, as is typical with the Virginia offense, the linemen are taught to block more of a zoned area than a specific player (i.e. don't let a LB cross your face) The plays mostly went for positive yardage and sizable gains at that. If the LB vacated the spot as can be seen a few times in that video you provided, he is supposed to keep his head on a swivel and look for an unblocked man if someone does not cross his face. Zone blocking creates a lot of "wash" between the LB's and OL where the DL is caught as well. This is a benefit to the zone scheme, similar to Virginia's offense. If he were running a man blocking principle offense and was not engaged when he reached the second level I would be more concerned. On his pull plays, he is able to get out in front, and while he needs to work on actually engaging the block, he is very good at disrupting the defenders path to the ball behind him.

Played OL (Mainly LT) is a zone scheme for 6 years.....I know a little bit about the nuances...

I am sold on his physical abilities...

Not sold on the things I like to see out of an offensive lineman...nastiness, agressivess, throwing his body around, the ability to get a solid hit on a defender in space.....I didn't see it...

Could care less about the amount of sacks he gave up...The guy was dominated on most of the pass plays I saw...Crossing over his feet, slow coming up out of his stance, and then he just looks soft...either he has a bad feel for the QB setting up in the pocket or his QB took terrible drops...I think it is the former though because one play he almost got the RB and QB killed by letting the D-lineman str8 across from him just beat him from the word go...

I need to see more film on the guy but I think I pretty much have him pegged...

Go back and look at the RG and then look at Albert...Albert clearly stands out as THE physical specimen on the line, but as far as a ball player the RG has him beat...

I won't disrupt this thread anymore, but I am not sold on the guy at all...I think he has A LOT of work to do to become anywhere near a dominant ball player on the next level...From the clips I watched he wasn't even really dominating the guys in college...

Well where ever you have your head, pull it out. Stick to the skill guys because you just missed an all pro prospect. Barring inury, who ever drafts him will jump their rushing numbers next year twenty percent.

Sacks given up pertains directly to his ability in pass protection. Albert was not dominated on pass plays as you say. He is actually quite quick out of his stance in comparison to other OL. If you want to point out things he needs to work on in pass protection, you would be correct in saying that he needs to keep a lower base as to not allow the defender to get inside leverage or get under his pads. Albert sometimes will rise up too much out of his stance, but the "explosive" part has never been in question by anyone. When you mention "throwing his body around", you need to re-look at game tape. You will see Albert effectively use a cut block in the open field. You will also see Albert move well on screen plays and pulls within open space and run towards a defender to deliver what was often a knockdown in the open field. That is impressive. The main thing that can be critiqued from the clips you chose to show us is his willingness to continue his blocks. There were plays where he clearly dominated, as in he blocked his defender out of bounds or to the other side of the field or simply pushed them back up the middle. There were also a few instances where it seems he thought the play was over and the defender was able to disengage the block and assist on the play. That is technique that is easily fixable. I see technique flaws, but none of what you mention.

So I guess the film is lying...

Won't debate it anymore because my mind is just about made up...

We'll just have to wait and see.

No...

Not in the film I posted from youtube...

But despite that...even if there were instances where he dominated his man, it's college...There are a lot of players that, because of their physical prowess, dominate in the college ranks...

There were also many instances where he got dominated...moreso than the opposite...

The main thing that can be critiqued from the clips you chose to show us is his willingness to continue his blocks.

First of all, I didn't "choose" anything...Those were the only clips I found...If you have more film please post it...

And secondly...

Try again...

The guy stopped blocking and looked lazy in many instances...

The guy is big, strong, fast and pretty agile...

I'm not disputing that...

It's the NCAA so big, strong, fast guys don't neccessarily have to be the best ball players...They can simply outmatch their opponents with physical abilities...

In the NFL where every body he faces will be just as agile, big, strong, and fast this guy will struggle....He may come around as he gets more experience, but I doubt it...He just doesn't look to be all that great a ball player...

JMO.

Have your opinion but please stop trying to pass your ideaology off as fact.

I've studied more than just a few youtube clips. I have tape on Albert dating back to when he first arrived and played with D'brick. I've watched more than my fair share of Virginia offense linemen.

Yes, on the film you posted. Against Miami he does. He also has good blocks throughout. Just because he doesn't record a pancake or a knockdown doesn't mean it wasn't a good block. He sealed edges as well as pulled.

This is what I pointed out in more words. This is a coaching issue that will be fixed within the first week of 90% of the NFL camps. Playing to the whistle. I said this:

That's cute. However, I honestly thought we were having a draft debate. You are giving your opinion and points with it, and granted I don't agree, but I'm not trying to disrespect it. This is the first time I've seen you attempt a debate in this manner and I've been having fun with it. If you want to stop, I'll just leave it be. I'm giving my opinion as an amateur scout. I've been doing it on this board for years (dating back to the old board before the switch :[ ). I'm not asking anyone to take my side, but I will give evidence to support my claims and assertions and then leave it up to the reader to form their opinion.

You must be a masochist, YTF. Especially if any of that footage is from the 2006 season.

Let us know when you find tape of him playing tackle (only two games) since those are the two games that has everyone drooling. His pass pro at LT was terrific this year.
