Bowl game player review

I watched a lot more college ball recently as I think this draft may be our most important one yet for Texans. 2-3 more starters and some strengthening of other spots may have the effect of launching Texans to Super Bowl in 1-2 seasons. That's right maybe next season. Who out there really scares you? Pats? Nope they might get beat next Sunday. Colts? Their good but we can beat them. Anyway, my focus was on free safety, corner, left guard and power back.

1. Cameron Nelson FS Arizona 6'1" 202 lbs did not stand out to me. Had three significant plays but I lost focus on him quickly.
2. Colin Baxter LG/C Arizona 6'4" 295 lbs WOW! Never watch him before but quickly caught my eye. I was focusing on Suh who hit the right side of Arizona's line for two sacks but never saw him go against Baxter. This guard looked pretty darn good as Suh is not the only Dlineman to watch out for. Baxter stayed with his blocks often hitting the guy again if the QB did not get rid of the ball timely and became threatened again. One play Baxter blocked through his guy then raced down field. I forgot he was a lineman..he boogied. When he went to sideline he remained focused on the game. If there after round four, I'd grab him.
3. Charles Scott Rb LSU 5' 11" 234 4.60 didn't know he would be held out and could not see what the PR was all about. Almost 1200 yds 5.4 avg in 2008. Collar bone against ALabama in early November kept me from checking him out. Should be in Senior bowl with Anthony Dixon.
4. Patrick Peterson CB LSU 6'1" 205 I wrote "NOPE!" on my notes after watching this guy stink it up. In first quarte he was out of position and was faked out leading to a TD and another position his placement led to a first down. The announcers kept saying "He is a very good player.." and i kept saying "Well, he forgot to bring his skills to this one".

5. Haden Cb Florida Tebow who? This is the best player in Florida and started for 3 seasons including his freshman year. Having watched him before only led to my satisfaction in his performance against Cincinatti. If only he would drop..
6. Chad Jones SS LSU 6' 235 man this guy grabbed my attention. He was all over the field. I kept saying watch the corners and the FS but my eyes were not listening to my lips. Check his stats http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=232416 If Pollard does not sign this beast should be on Texans radar. Hits like a LB should.
6.Patrick Robinson CB FSU 5' 11" 194 4.42 No interested in this one. He fell down in 1st quarter and then later was able to catch a guy from behind to stop a TD but just did not look good to me although I kept waiting. I read an article some time ago comparing him with Haden and the guy said he was a distant #2 and had stiff hips. I had been hoping he would go ahead of Earl THomas forcing the FS closer to us. HA!
7. Mike Ford RB 6' 225lbs I knew little of this guy but chose a good game to watch, 207 yards. What really is exciting is he did almost all of it in one half so fits in good with our team. Dude was arrested for driving his moped on sidewalk after midnight without have his license with him. He has numerous traffic violations that may indicate maturity issue.http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf/2009/12/usfs-ford-arrested-for-driving-without-license.html
8. Jerome Murphy CB S.Florida 6'1" 185 4.48 on an earlier mock I had him in 3rd if Kyle Wilson was gone. Never watched this FS/KR but if I can get a CB by round three he may be my FS and back up corner in round 4. He was fun to watch against W. Illinois. He exhibited a good burst of speed to break up a long pass that was not his guy (I don't think). Involved in a bizarre play in that he recovered a fumble, ran with it and then fumbled it back. The very next play, he intercepts the QB. Good energy and did not get flustered on his fumble.
9. Perrish Cox This Oklahoma State CB was high on my interest list at perhaps round two. He was suspended from the bowl game fro violating team rules. Only thing I can find out is he missed a curfew. Good size and speed at 4.44.

I probably missed some one but hope you find this info interesting. Remember Boise STate plays TCU tonight on Fox at 7:15. Kyle Wilson is on my watch list.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have liked Charles Scott since last year, and have his valued pegged for the 3rd. Chad Jones plays baseball at LSU as well, but have not seen anything on his desire to play baseball in the Majors.

Scott's a tough runner who'll probably run a 4.65 and fall a bit , like Shonn Green . Jones could play safety for the Texans and pitch mid relief for the Astros .
 
If Walterfootball.com is correct with Gerhart to Houston in 3rd, I'll take that. Can you compare Scott to Anthony Dixon and/or Ryan Matthews from Fresno? I have not seen either of these three. I have seen Gerhart and he is awesome.

I'm not sure who your asking but Gerhart , Scott , and Dixon are 235+ . Matthwes is listed at 220 lbs and is faster shiftier .

Now my bias to SEC players will raise it's ugly head , meaning if all else is equal ... go with the SEC . My preference would probably be ( in order ) Matthews , Scott , Dixon , and Gerhart .

They learned that he wanted first-round money. I've heard numbers ranging from $800,000 to $2 million. Maybe the Astros were shocked by this. They shouldn't have been. Anyway, the Astros now seem content to let Chad Jones go play football at LSU. They have until August 15 to sign him, but football practice begins August 4. Once he's on the field, that probably will be that.

We may not need his skills but watch Jerry Hughes, DE for TCU. He is a local product (Sugar Land, TX) who played at my high school as a running back and hit beast mode as a DE at TCU.

I prefer a heavier back. Does this guy run strong through the tacklers or is he more of hit the seam and go?

Mathews is the real deal. Doesn't have the power of Gerhart but is at least adequate in that area. He can fly too and he always hits the hole hard.

Haven't got around to watch all the tapes, but these three guys were on my radar since last year. Baring injuries or off-the-court issues, I think they all have a future in the NFL.

Jones was drafted by the Astros, I think.

Jones was impressive but is he coming out?
 
Kyle Wilson will be nothing more than a nickel corner in the NFL. He is a great athlete but he won't be able to tackle at the next level. That arm tackle crap isn't gonna work.

Brandyn Thompson caught my eye but he is a big time risk taker. He got the pick six but he also got beat deep on the double move for the TD.

Doug Martin also caught my eye on Boise St. He is the RB, only a soph. He didn't have a great game but he got the tough yards against a tough defense.

For TCU, S Alex Ibiloye looked good. He is undersized for a safety though. He could make a roster as a special teams guy. Could maybe be your sixth DB in a dime set.

LB Daryl Washington is a good tackler and plays well against the run. The TEs abused him in the passing game though.

DE Jerry Hughes looks like a one trick pony to me. Gonna have to be a 34 OLB I think. Great athleticism though.

Jeremy Kerley, a junior, has a future in the NFL as a return specialist. I can pretty much guarantee it.

I did watch him last night and I agree with your assessment. He is not a beast he is a VERY FAST BEAST. Seemed to be very strong also. If he was around in 6th or 7th, I could see picking him up. Don't know his draft status.

Sure was a lot of fumbling the last two weekends in NFL. It is easy to say "hold on to the ball" yet some of those fumbles we see yearly; many would be dropped. It is the fumble where guy is holding with one hand or not pulled into the body you are probably refering to.

Nothing firm either way to my knowledge but a concern would be acceleration and good hips to cover. SImilar to Pollard in running forward to hit and tackle but not as good in coverage. In right system should do very well.

Good review but I disagree on Wilson. Kyle is same height as DR and 4 lbs heavier. You are correct on arm tackling but that can be fixed. Wilson speed is 4.42 and he exhibited that last night by breaking up a long pass in first four minutes of the game. He then had a good return that was cancelled by a dumb block in the opponent's back by his team mate. That is one of the most stupid penalties a player can do and is the case last night the tackler was not that close to Wilson. He had an unblocked path to QB causing a fumble on a blitz and again the speed was awesome. He did have an error in judgement in 3rd quarter by allowing too much cushion and WR caught the pass. I will probably have him on my board in third round as my first choice.

Thompson, I think you are on target. A risk taker looks great if it works, stupid if it doesn't. Reminds me of P. Buchannan we traded from Oakland.

Our pony is named Connor Barwin and he did ok for his first year.

I rated the RB's like this
1. Dixon (Stud RB that played on a bad team)
2.Mathews (great all around RB)
3.Gerhart (would be higher fumle issues concern me)
4.Scott (Should be available in the 4th or 5th rd)

Holy jeez, Adrian Clayborn was insane last night. Why in the world did he come back for another year? He was easily the best player on the field.
 
I hope the Tarrant kid from Ga.Tech comes out.

He's got a history but he looks like a no.1 CB to me.

with all the defensive firepower like suh and mccoy and berry coming out this year he could be top five next year instead of mid-first round this year

This is Tarrant's first year playing football, and this was easily his best game of the season.

He's a lot like Jacoby to me in that he'll make a really good play and then marginalize it with a terribly stupid mistake. But, he's definitely got the size, speed, and athleticism that NFL scouts look for.

He'll be back at Tech next year at least to continue to develop.

And, don't let this game fool you. He's a supreme talent. It's not like he had a bad game either. He got some pressures, forced a holding penalty, and was very solid in run support.

I've only watched his last game and did not focus on him as I knew nothing about him. He is a sophomore after red shirt freshman season. I don't think he has played a complete season yet. His 40 is faster than I would have thought for 215 weight but I want a FS drafted sooner. I'd advise him to stay in school at least one more year.

I was very disappointed in GT game plan and turned game off at half time. I wanted to watch Dwyer but I think he only got one carry and that was -3 yards. I've been comparing him to Gerhart for Texans but I am pushing JD down.

Should have kept watching, he had a great second half, and the game was competitive until the end.

Dwyer's 100X better than Gerhart too, BTW

sorry i'm not saying he didnt have a good game but DERRICK morgan was someone everyone was telling me to watch and i was not ready to crown him after last night i have some tech games dvr'd so i'll watch them and come back with my assessment! deal?
 
That triple option had no chance against Iowa. They are just too well coached. They have no egos. Nobody tries to be a hero, they just go out there and do their job. Plus, they have tons of guys on that defense that are going to be in the NFL. Most of them will be lower draft picks, but they are still talented.

Not true, they worked him on the outside more this game than they had all season. Also, that one run that almost resulted in a safety took a nice chunk of yardage off his total.

TE Tony Moeaki helped his draft stock early 3rd late 2nd.
  • excellent hands
  • excellent inline blocker
  • excellent route runner
  • ability to run after catch
 
I was impressed with Dwyer. He looked explosive and powerful. Caught the ball out of the backfield and had a nice gain. The one play almost for a safety was a dumb move. Probably just trying to make a play, something, anything happen to spark some energy into the team. I doubt he tries that in the pros. I think Dwyer would be a good fit on this team.

IDK, I did not see anything in first half and we have enough guys that play only 1/2 of game. I am even more solidly in Gerhart's camp. He cranked it up evrey game I watched. Even if he lost yards due to a stupid move, a stupid move works the same in NFL.
 
Pretty silly to watch one half of a game of his, in which the entire offense played poorly, and assume that he "play only 1/2 of [the] game."

When all's said and done he'll be no worse than the third back taken in this draft and the Texans would be so lucky as to have him on their team.

I was only listing the defensive players. I've always been a big fan of Moeaki. He can't seem to stay on the field an entire year because of injuries but when he is on, he is a complete player.

Explain how that is silly? I watched him do basically nothing for 2 quarters. The Texans were blasted more than once for not playing a full game. His final stats were 49 yards with avg about 3.5. Don't we already have backs doing that. I was pushing him earlier this season but he needed to come up big in the bowl and did not. I hope you are correct that he is third back(or better) taken as that should push a need player to us regardless of the round.
 
Anybody like Stanzi, he is a Junior, but I have watched a few Iowa games and he runs the boot very well and makes big plays off play action which is how our offense operates.

He is a bit turnover prone, but that's coachable right? Seems to have a pretty quick release. It will be interesting how he does next year. I wouldn't mind taking him if he is there in the mid to late rounds next year.

We dont have any back that has the talent of Dwyer. Its silly to judge him on one half a game vs a good D that is geared up to stop him. He is one of those rare big backs that can bust one for a long TD at anytime. Just becuase he didnt do it in one half of a single game is no reason to ignore the fact that he has done it consistantly throughout his college career. He reminds me alot of Jerome Bettis at ND.

I either want him in the first or LeGarrette Blount 6-0, 245 4.60 Oregon in the 3rd or 4th who reminds me alot of Steven Jackson. We need a big guy that can not only get the tough yards but is capable of busting long runs after breaking tackles if we are going to continue to run the ZB scheme.

I also want another quality 3rd down type back that can take it to the house on any given play. I dont want to go into next season HOPING Slaton turns it around. Give me C.J. Spiller in the first, Jahvid Best in the 2nd.
