Since we've been dealing with the Lions in FA, I can see:
We swaps first rounders 15(1050) & 20(850) (+200)
Detroit gets our 1st pick in the 4th 112(70) (+270)
We get Detroit's 1st in the 3rd (265)
Houston would have 20,46,65,77,122

1. Clay Matthews, OLB
2. Max Unger, C/G
3. Rashad Johnson, FS
3. Rashad Jennings, RB
4. Asher Allen, CB

Texans trade 1st round pick and 2nd round pick to the Eagles for their two 1st round picks.

Texans Get:
1st RD - #21 (800)
1st RD - #28 (660)
Total - 1460 pts

Eagles Get:
1st RD - #15 (1050)
2nd RD - #46 (440)
Total - 1490 pts

Texans Draft:
#21 OLB Clay Matthews, USC
#28 CB Sean Smith, Utah
 
The Texans would give to the Patriots pick #15 worth 1050 points and the Patriots would give to the Texans picks #34 and #47 worth a combined 990 points. This would be a 60 point difference in favor of the Patriots, but that's how you sell the trade to them. All the elite talent will be gone by the 15th pick and the players in the mid 1st round are the same talent level as those in the 2nd round. This would give us three 2nd round picks, where the greatest value in the draft is located this year. Would yall make that trade? I'd then take Patrick Chung, Andy Levitre, and Andre Brown.
 
Trade #15 and #46 to Detroit for #33 and their 2010 1st rounder. Use #33 on Sean Smith, Max Unger, or Donald Brown, and then use the 2010 #1, which likely will fall in the top 10 or even more likely in the top 5, on either Taylor Mays (USC) or Eric Berry (Tennessee).

This is my dream scenario. The pick this year would all make a big impact in my opinion, and then either of the two players next year would legitimize the Texans D and be the play-making safety we've never had.

I think this is a likely scenario. I don't think it will be easy to get premium value on a 1st round trade down this year. But, that's okay because the middle rounds are so valuable. Also, I really don't like the trade ideas that have us giving up mid round picks with our first only to have an extra second. I think that defeats the purpose of a trade down... That extra 4th rounder is very valuable this year... not something to be tossed into a deal as an afterthought. So, if we make the NE deal, here's the Texan board:

34. Sean Smith FS/CB

47. Clint Sintim SLB
77. Rashod Jennings RB
112.David Bruton SS
122. Dan Gronkowski TE
5th. Terrance Taylor DT

that's a good situation to be in... I went ahead and through in a mock draft of guys we could likely draft in that situation. That scenario really allows us to fill all our glaring needs by round 4- with quality prospects. Any scenario that lets us come away with those top 4 guys would be great, IMO!

I posted this trade offer on one of the N.E. Patriots web sites boards and most of their fans liked it and would do this trade, so maybe we could get Smith to look at this idea. I agree with you about the trade down and picking up extra picks, and the value in this draft is in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. There will be lots of starters taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and maybe a few in the 4th, very deep draft that lacks elite talent. As for your mock ehhhh.

2. Smith, will play FS in the NFL and we've already got a starting FS. Wilson played well for us and I know he's a stop gap measure but there are bigger holes to fill this year than FS. I also don't like tweener players with no real position. Making the transition to the NFL is hard enough without switching positions at the same time.
2. Wood, great player, I prefer an OG like Levitre, the need at G is greater, but either would be a great improvement.
2. Sintim, good choice he fills a need at SLB. I think he'll be good against the run but I question his ability in pass coverage. He's more of a 3-4 ILB.
3. Jennings, good pick but don't know if he'll still be available.
4. Bruton, great speed but can he cover?
4. Gronkowski, fills a need but we can get him in the 6th or 7th round.
5. Taylor, good pick if he's still available.
6&7 we've got bigger needs to fill than another RB or FB. In the late rounds I like taking Safeties and LB's cause they're going to be playing special teams anyways and their at least tough and have the tackling ability, and maybe you get lucky with an outstanding S or LB.

That would be fantastic if we did this and we managed to get Eric Berry next year. He will be going in the top 5 though so it would have to be another high pick for them.

I won't give a #15 first and #14 round 2 for the first pick in 2nd and later pick in first next year. Sound good but we need players NOW. We disagree on Detroit next season. I expect a very good draft from them regardless of trading with Texans and a mid to late first round in 2010. A LT with #1 and a QB later in first plus probably another starter in 2nd and they can be a much improved team.Like the Texans and Atlanta, Detroit is a teram to watch. Lions also got a pretty good LB in FA.

This is pretty much a trade I was thinking of. There's several prospects I really like and wanted to find a way to get all of them. While giving up our 4th round pick seems to better equate to the chart, If they have a prospect they're willing to trade up for I think we could give them Minnesota's 4th rounder. Maybe not... but some player would be slipping and they're the ones that should over pay (my thinking;))

So here's my deal (SO similar to yours). Maybe Michael Oher slips and they trade up for him to protect their #1 pick Stafford. Or maybe they take Smith #1 and trade up for Sanchez/Freeman?

OMT, sorry but I like Philips choices over all. I think I'd go with Jennings in 3rd rather than a CB if he's there. I am ok with your first 3 if it falls that way, but do you not address stopping the run? No one on how defensive line can stop a power back. Do we just ignore that?
 
If I'm trading I'd rather trade for future considerations. Maybe trade out of the first round this year for a first rounder next year (similar to Philly and Carolina's 2008 trade.) If the talent is down in the first round this year, which it apparently is, then it would only make sense to move out of the first for a pick when there will be better first round talent.

Of course, this is all an exercise in futility anyway as trades always hinge on a number of factors out of even Rick Smith's control.

No problem, I like Philips choices a lot as well. I agree we need to do something to stop the run but where, when and at what cost? If I choose a DT like Sammie Lee Hill to stop the run then there goes the Pass Rushing DE we also need. I think there will be some DTs for us to look at throughout the rounds, I just don't see anyone that I like anybetter than trying to upgrade our secondary, running game, etc.

Plus I've got this problem with the DTs already on the roster and who would get cut if I choose a DT in the 3rd round on. Amobi Okoye, Travis Johnson, Shaun Cody, Frank Okam, Deljuan Robinson. I'm not saying nobody could beat any of them out. I just don't want to select another Frank Okam in the 5th round just to replace Frank Okam.

Believe me though, I wanted to pick a DT somewhere... maybe the 7th? We def. need some guys in training camp. This mock was just me going through some players I really like, seem like total Texans kind of players and fit what we want to do. I basically picked a lot of players I really liked, thought of what round the may go in and made a trade to get them. I don't really have a good grasp of the later round players though, like what they offer and which rounds they may go in.
