Beerlover Mock IV w/texans trade down

First let me say personally I want the Texans to draft Vince Young first or Reggie Bush. I realize I'm not giving the Texans alot of return for trading down picks so you can throw in additional draft picks as deemed necassary, the main focus should be #1 the players draft order and #2 the Texans addressing needs on defense (switching to a 4-3) and protection for David Carr. :superman:

1 Titans (via Texans, exchange #1's & Texans get restricted free agent DE Kyle Vanden Bosch) Vince Young, QB UT

2 Saints- Matt Leinart, QB USC

3 Jets (via Texans, via Titans, exchange #1's Texans get restricted free agent John Abraham) Reggie Bush, RB USC

4 Texans (via Jets, Mike Sherman given the reigns to rebuild the Texans offensive line with a young franchise tackle) D'Brickashaw Ferguson, LT Virginia

5 Packers- Mario Williams, DE North Carolina State

6 Raiders- AJ Hawk, LB Ohio State

7 49er's- Michael Huff, CB/FS UT

8 Bills- Haloti Ngata, DT UO

9 Lions- Winston Justice, OT USC

10 Cards- DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis

11 Rams- Jimmy Williams, CB/FS VT

12 Browns- Chad Greenway, LB Iowa

13 Ravens- Tamba Hali, DE Penn State

14 Eagles- Santonio Holmes, WR OSU

15 Falcons- Tye Hill, CB Clemson

16 Dolphins- Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbuilt

17 Vikings- LenDale White, RB USC

18 Cowboys- Eric Winston, OT U Jonathan Scott, OT UT

19 Chargers- Marcus McNeil, OT Auburn

20 Chiefs- Mathias Kiwanuka, DE Boston College

21 Patriots- Laurence Maroney, RB MN

22 Broncos via Redskins- DeMarco Ryans, OLB Alabama

23 Bucs- Taitusi Lutui, OG USC

24 Bengals- Ko Simpson, S South Carolina

25 Giants- Jason Allen, CB/FS Tennessee

26 Bears- Vernon Davis, TE Maryland

27 Panthers- Leonard Pope, TE Georgia

28 Jaguars- Sinorice Moss, WR Miami

29 Broncos- Darnell Bing, S USC

30 Colts- Abdul Hodge, MLB Iowa

31 Steelers- Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio State

32 Seahawks- Darryl Tapp, DE VT

FYI--Neither Van den Bosch nor Abraham are RFA's. They have both accrued 4 or more NFL seasons. Van den Bosch signed a 1 year contract last year but Reese has said getting him to sign a long term deal is a top priority. Abraham played last year under a franchise tag so to trade him the Jets will have to slap that on him again.

I have them listed as restricted free agents but that seems like loose terminology as your correct on each specific status, but regardless who is to say that the Titans would'nt be willing to trade the rights to Van den Bosch to aquire the rights for Vince Young or that Vince Young regardless of which team drafts him won't be the 1st player overall? the Abraham deal would also hinge on contract talks but given the Texans flexabiltiy and willingness to improve the defense a deal could be worked out & if Bush is not selected 1st I could see him slipping to the 3rd overall pick and the Jets would be willing to package a deal to aquire his rights as well.

Generally I don't like to include trades in Mock Drafts, I would rather focus on a draft board and rate the players accordingly to teams needs. I like the order I presently have posted and the teams the players wind up going to, the method and means may be another thing but this is just one example of how the Texans could address mutliple needs most expeditiously :pigfly:

If the texans could actualy pull that off, it would go down as one of the best trades in the history of the draft. But the rest of the draft looks great. But I'm not sold on Ko Simpson as a first rounder.

Why would the Jets give up the best DE for 1 pick? They could wait and take either Bush, if the Texans let him slip to 4, or take D'Brick with the 4th pick if the texans take Reggie Bust. Either way they get to keep their best DL and improve their team.

Becuase Abraham has the option to leave anyway.

I agree that in this scenario I don't see the Jets giving up Abraham just to move up one spot, although they are way over the cap and might end up losing Abraham since it will be hard for them to afford him, but at the same time it will be hard to add Reggie Bush's contract onto their payroll as well. I could see them making a decent trade to move up to #1 to ensure they get Bush (salary cap nonwithstanding), but not to move from #3 to #4. If we're going to trade down, I'd prefer to do it directly with the Jets, grab this year's 3rd, next year's 1st, and John Abraham, then draft Mario Williams so we have Abraham and Mario as our DEs to create some nice pressure on opposing QBs, then hopefully Eric Winston will fall to #33 but if not, either use #33 and one of our three 3rds to move back into the mid-late 1st to grab him there or else just take the next best OT available at #33.

ok, there are things i really like and some i dont.

i dont think the titans will trade. they have the perfect senario at #3. if the saints take leinart, they get young. if they take young, they get leinart. and if for some reason the texans and saints pass on bush, they get bush.

and, regardless of team needs, i just can imagine reggie bush slipping to #3

so aside from that, 1-10 looks good

11-20 is pretty good too, but 2 things, jimmy williams is slipping and i dont think he will go top 15. eric winston is also slipping and he is most likely a late 1st or early 2nd.

21-32
looks good as well, but there is NO WAY that a stud like Vernon Davis will fall to #26. I dont think people realize how much potential he has. There is NO WAY that he even falls out of top 15. also, Taitui Laitsui is not really a 1st round talent, i say he goes in the 3rd. love that sinorice moss is going in the 1st. i have been high on him for awhile. not alot of people see him as a first rounder, but i definitely think he is, and he definitely will be. I dont think there is any way that the Jags will take him tho. they have 3 young receivers, 2 who they drafted in the 1st round: matt jones (#21 overall pick) reggie williams (#9 overall pick) and ernest wilford, who is a good young player

other then a few things here or there, its a good mock.

I did have Max Jean Gilles rated as the top guard a route that Gruden might take to beef up the interior of his OL, but Taitui Laitsui is massive 6050 370 & could become the protypical NFL roadgrader the Caddy needs. This would be one of those fits based on best player available at a need position and not just bpa. but thanks for the feedback :ok:

Mork this would be the best possible scenario. Think about it even though I would think we get a third and 4th if and next years first in the scenario you are talking about. Then we use those two picks and next year's second(helps with cap) to grab Winston. Then we still have the top second round pick to play with. Not sure about you but was thinking trade down in the second also get maybe Mangold and Zematais or another top CB/FS unless maybe Ko Simpson falls to us.

further explanation how this works, The Texans select Vince Young 1st overall in the draft. OK so far? The deal is on the table and the Texans are in a position of power & control the situation. With Vince off the board, the Saints need a QB & pass on Bush to take Matt Leinart. This is where the deal either gets done or doesn't. would the Titans take Bush? or would do they really, really still want VY?

with McNair back in fold with a restructered cap friendlier contract & mentor of Vince Young the price of a expensive DE like Kyle Vanden Bosch is a resonable offer. the Titans trade the pick, now the Texans are on the clock, with the 2nd offer still on the table to the Jets. Abraham does not want to be franchised and seeks a long term, set-up for life deal along with the fact Curtis Martin is feeling the effects of a long, brilliant NFL career the Jets would be willing to trade John Abrahams rights to select Reggie Bush, thus killing two birds with one stone.

this leaves the Texans on the clock with D'Brickashaw Ferguson still on the board and both DE's & LB's for a 4-3 settled. with the 4th pick in the 2006 NFL draft the Texans draft their franchise LT. The beauty of this is the Texans are in control (other than waiting for the Saints to make their selection) if the deal does not go thru, I would be just as happy keeping our picks, be it Vince Young #1 overall or Reggie Bush #3 overall. its a win/win, they may even sweeten the deals but for arguements sake not dependent on getting an agreement hammered out

Tough Call Beerlover.
A few ways to go.
1. Mercedes Lewis. We get the pass catching TE we have been dreaming of.
2. We need a LB, how about Manny lawson or Demeco Ryans?
3. If we go 4-3, how about Gabe Watson or Rod Wright?
4. Jon Scott: we pick up a good Right tackle. Now we put Dbrick on Left, Scott on Right, move Pitts to LG ,put Da Hog at C and shift McKinney to RG. This could be a pretty decent line next year and a solid one for yearas to come.

Now here is the thing with your scenario I would also ask the Titans for the 2nd rounder this year. In that way we could take Demeco Ryans at LB and say Lewis or Scott. Or we can go for CB Allan Zematis.

1. Maybe, we do need a TE but I'd look to get one later, especially if we pick up an extra 2nd rounder and still have two 3rds.
2. We don't need a LB that bad, Manny Lawson would be an OLB passrusher in a 3-4, he wouldn't really fit into a 4-3. Demeco Ryans is athletic but is pretty undersized, and at this point I don't think LB is a spot we can invest a high draft pick in, if we get a LB we need to get a MLB, so we can get Rocky McIntosh from Miami or Anthony Schlegel from Ohio State in a later round.
3. We are transitioning to a 4-3, and DT is the last position we need to draft. Depending on personnel we might have to run a 3-4 for a much of this next season, but for a 4-3 we already have Seth Payne, Robaire Smith, Gary Walker, and Travis Johnson as good DTs and we don't need to add another, we need to look DE.
4. If we pick D'Brick in the 1st round we don't need to get another OT. Pitts is better as a OT, so if we go with more OLinemen (I think we should anyways) go for interior OLinemen like Nick Mangold or Davin Joseph.

We are switching to a 4-3, so we definitely need DEs somewhere high in the draft or free agency. My preference in trading down would be to get Mario Williams in the 1st, then get Eric Winston in the 2nd, I think it is much more crucial to get the top DE than the top LT because Pitts is pretty good as our LT while we have no good DEs, and I like Eric Winston's versatility and better run blocking skills than Ferguson anyways, and we could get him at #33.
We need to look for a CB and/or FS somewhere relatively high in the draft.
We need a new TE but I think there are enough pretty good ones in the draft and don't think it's crucial enough to take one in the 2nd round unless maybe if we trade down and get an extra 2nd rounder in there.
LB is a need but Wong and Greenwood are locked into big contracts, Wong can play MLB but is better suited at OLB, so it would be better to bring in a MLB like Schlegel or Rocky in the 5-6th rounds.

I don't see the Titans as viable trading partners. They know the Saints are currently leaning towards Leinart and that we are leaning towards Bush so Vince will be there and they have no reason to trade up to get him, and they know that if we decide we want Vince that we will take him at #1 and won't be willing to trade, so I don't see them giving up much to "ensure" they get Vince, and worst case scenario from their standpoint would be the Saints deciding to take Vince and then the Titans either get Leinart or D'Brickashaw, so they're not in a bad position at all.

I see the Jets or Packers as the most likely trading partners if they decide they want to move up and build their offenses around a new QB (Jets) or RB (Jets or Packers), although once again for the Jets OLine is a big need too so they could stay at #4 and likely get D'Brick unless the Titans take him, in which case one of their QBs would be availalbe anyways, and the Packers need defensive help as much as anything, and at #5 they can choose between Mario Williams and A.J. Hawk, so both of them might be satisfied with their draft position and not give up much to trade up.
