bah007's Full 2014 Mock

bah007

Hall of Fame
I do a full seven round mock right before the draft each year. Here is this year's edition. There are no trades. I use my own player rankings and I draft for each team as if I were the GM. I do not try to guess what other people would do. This gives me a better, more realistic idea of who will be available at each of the Texans selections. With that said, here is the Texans' 2014 draft if I were in charge, with my scouting report for each player:

1.1. Blake Bortles – QB, UCF 6-5 232
460x.jpg

- Great size. Very athletic. Moves well in the pocket and very mobile. Extremely composed under pressure. Never panics. Tough and confident, led his team to several comeback victories. Strong, but not elite arm strength. Seems to have no major mechanical issues, but needs to work on consistency in movement. Was given a decent amount of control in his offense, but he is still somewhat raw and would be better off sitting for a year. Seems coachable and intelligent. Needs to improve his touch. Deep ball could improve. Gets lazy when there is no pressure on him. Ball security has been an issue when hit by an unseen defender. Conference Player of the Year his final year. Has all the physical skills to be a franchise QB. Just needs to be coached up.

2.33. Morgan Moses – OT, Virginia 6-6 314
sports---moses.jpg

- Huge frame with long arms. Large but doesn’t carry a ton of bad weight. Patient off the snap in pass protection, waits for his man and doesn’t lunge. Takes advantage of his length by using his arms to keep defenders from getting in on him. Good feet. Slides laterally well and can handle a speed rusher off the edge. Very flexible for his size. Good first step off the snap when moving forward. Powerful hands allow him to control defenders in the run game. Doesn’t just block defenders, he moves them. Can move in straight lines only when run blocking. Drops his head and reaches when blocking on the move. Can lose leverage against smaller defenders. Despite his size, I think he projects better to LT. He is a better pass protector than run blocker.

3.65. Carl Bradford – ILB, Arizona St 6-1 250
23373d5e-01ae-4ab9-ba13-eec0c7d87326.jpg

- Powerful frame but very short arms. Very physical. Understands leverage and knows how to use it to take out blockers. Great instincts. Locates the ball very quickly. Good quickness off the snap and has already developed some deadly pass rushing moves. Very versatile player. Played DE, OLB, and ILB in college. Played FB in high school and will be helpful on special teams. Looked good in coverage but wasn’t asked to do it very often. Despite his production he is a limited athlete. Good burst and acceleration but not great speed. When blockers get inside on him he doesn’t have the length to get off. Overly passionate player who will need to tone it down at times to avoid unnecessary penalties. Sometimes plays out of control when his emotions run high. Spent most of his time in college as an edge rusher, but projects better to ILB in the pros where his lack of athleticism won’t be exposed.

4.101. DeAndre Coleman – DE, California 6-5 314
GGYRJAEIATKMFQL.20131027055707.jpg

- Huge frame with long arms and thick legs. Excellent power. Uses his arms to keep blockers off his body. Sheds blocks well. Can take on two blockers and occasionally beat both. Great athlete for his size, very quick. Tools are there, just hasn’t put it all together yet. His height can sometimes be an issue. Doesn’t always get great leverage. Doesn’t follow the QB’s eyes and get his hands up. Run stuffer only at this point. Not enough burst to make an impact as a pass rusher. Perfect fit as a two gap DE.

4.135. Michael Schofield – LG, Michigan 6-6 301
Michael+Schofield+Michigan+v+Alabama+0HCgHBrkSvdl.jpg

- Good frame with long arms. Patient blocker who squares up and uses leverage and position to his advantage. Anchors well and isn’t moved easily. Very aware of what is around him. Picks up extra rushers and cleans up other players’ mistakes. Competitive player who finishes blocks. Very experienced. Three year starter, one at LG and RT for the last two. Intelligent enough to play any position on the line if needed. Initial step is good but is a limited athlete with heavy feet. Average strength and power. Inconsistent hands, uses them well on one play and then holds for no reason on the next. Doesn’t move or redirect well. He will sometimes move without keeping his feet under him. Edge rushers can bring him off balance by using his momentum against him. Projects best at LG where his lack of athleticism isn’t exposed.

5.141. Ryan Carrethers – NT, Arkansas St 6-1 337
ILLPEPQLSBMYUIL.20131103013714.JPG

- Massive frame. Doesn’t carry a lot of bad weight. Former wrestler and it shows on the field. Anchors well and has a good center of gravity. Strong hands. Shows occasional ability to rush the passer from the inside. Dominated but at a lower level of competition. Short arms. Loses leverage at times. Doesn’t move well laterally. Not a very good athlete. Two time First Team All-Conference. Two gap nose tackle who is very difficult to move. Fits the 34.

...

6.177. Devonta Freeman – RB, Florida St 5-8 206
512x.jpg

- Compact build with a maxed out frame. Quick feet. Has good balance. Runs with low pads. Delivers hits, doesn’t absorb them. Can catch out of the backfield. Tough and determined player. Gives effort as a blocker but gets pushed around. Good acceleration but top speed isn’t that great. Good one cut runner but is sometimes too hesitant. Had fumbling issues before but appears to be corrected. Won’t break tackles on the inside. Won’t get yards after contact. Likely a third down back only.

6.181. Gator Hoskins – TE, Marshall 6-2 253
Gator+Hoskins+Jaylon+Finner+CUSA+Championship+NbhpkM19Su6l.jpg

- Not an ideal frame for a NFL TE. Great hands. Very good athlete for his size. Quick release into his routes. Stretches the field. Physical route runner who doesn’t let defenders dictate where he’s going to go. Despite his size he has a big catch radius. Has experience as a lead blocker in college, but was only adequate at it. First Team All-Conference his final year. Projects as a versatile offensive weapon that can play FB or H-Back. Fits the system perfectly as the “move” TE.

6.211. Brandon Dixon – CB, Northwest Missouri St 5-11 203
508b10c777481.preview-300.jpg

- Average frame. Fluid hips help him change direction quickly. Good technique in his backpedal. Doesn’t waste movement. Good spatial awareness. Keeps his eyes on the QB without losing his man. Tracks the ball well, but doesn’t finish as often as he should. More of a linear athlete. Great in zone coverage, hasn’t seen a lot of action in man. Seems to like contact, but sometimes too much. Played at a very small school, but was a two time All American. There will be a steep learning curve but projects as a late rounder who could flourish once he is coached up.

7.216. Derrell Johnson – SOLB, ECU 6-1 258
7_1160315.jpg

- Thick, short frame with powerful lower body. Just looks like an athlete. Natural pass rushing ability. Great initial step and closing burst. Flexible and bendable at the edge. Has two plus pass rushing moves that he mixes well. Has a ton of power and a low center of gravity. Sets the edge in the running game. Establishes leverage well and fights with physicality. Has strong hands and uses them effectively. Not very fluid unless he is moving forward. Doesn’t change direction well. Not great in coverage. Two time All-Conference selection. Projects as a strong side OLB who can defend against the run and rush the passer.

7.256. Ted Bolser – TE, Indiana 6-5 248
l4727540.jpg

- Very good size, but could add some more muscle to his frame. Reliable receiver with big, soft, strong hands. Catches the ball with his hands and not his body. Solid blocker already, and has the ability to get better with more coaching and experience. Average athlete. Not a speed guy and he doesn’t move exceptionally well, but he is a polished route runner who gets himself open consistently. Isn’t going to get many yards after the catch. Semifinalist for the John Mackey award his final year. Owns all the school records for TEs.

I'm a big fan of Moses, Bradford, Coleman, Freeman, and Hoskins.

I like Bortles, but would prefer to trade back before taking him. No trades though so can't hate the pick. I like the Johnson pick. I don't know if I've seen anyone else mention him on this forum this offseason but the guy is a player. I like Bolser, but this late in the draft I'd like to see a shot at a TE with more upside. Overall, I really like it though. Really like the front seven additions on defense.

Good stuff. MSR.

Wow, me and you have 2 picks in the first round the same lol.

Greg Robinson and Khalil Mack at #2 and #3. Every single other pick is different.

Did my boy Kapri Bibbs go undrafted? Also, Jeremy Gallon?

Both are still on the board.

Bibbs is the #3 back still out there behind Tim Cornett and James White.

Gallon is the #4 WR behind Devin Street, Marcus Lucas, and Corey Brown.

242. SF – Dez Southward – SS, Wisconsin

It's crazy that this guy would be a late-round/UDFA based on production, but some team is going to draft him in the 3rd-4th round because of his measureables. You can say the same for a quite a few guys in every draft. For all the work scouts do, some FO's just cannot help themselves when it comes to athletic potential.
