I do a full seven round mock right before the draft each year. Here is this year's edition. There are no trades. I use my own player rankings and I draft for each team as if I were the GM. I do not try to guess what other people would do. This gives me a better, more realistic idea of who will be available at each of the Texans selections. With that said, here is the Texans' 2014 draft if I were in charge, with my scouting report for each player:
1.1. Blake Bortles – QB, UCF 6-5 232
- Great size. Very athletic. Moves well in the pocket and very mobile. Extremely composed under pressure. Never panics. Tough and confident, led his team to several comeback victories. Strong, but not elite arm strength. Seems to have no major mechanical issues, but needs to work on consistency in movement. Was given a decent amount of control in his offense, but he is still somewhat raw and would be better off sitting for a year. Seems coachable and intelligent. Needs to improve his touch. Deep ball could improve. Gets lazy when there is no pressure on him. Ball security has been an issue when hit by an unseen defender. Conference Player of the Year his final year. Has all the physical skills to be a franchise QB. Just needs to be coached up.
2.33. Morgan Moses – OT, Virginia 6-6 314
- Huge frame with long arms. Large but doesn’t carry a ton of bad weight. Patient off the snap in pass protection, waits for his man and doesn’t lunge. Takes advantage of his length by using his arms to keep defenders from getting in on him. Good feet. Slides laterally well and can handle a speed rusher off the edge. Very flexible for his size. Good first step off the snap when moving forward. Powerful hands allow him to control defenders in the run game. Doesn’t just block defenders, he moves them. Can move in straight lines only when run blocking. Drops his head and reaches when blocking on the move. Can lose leverage against smaller defenders. Despite his size, I think he projects better to LT. He is a better pass protector than run blocker.
3.65. Carl Bradford – ILB, Arizona St 6-1 250
- Powerful frame but very short arms. Very physical. Understands leverage and knows how to use it to take out blockers. Great instincts. Locates the ball very quickly. Good quickness off the snap and has already developed some deadly pass rushing moves. Very versatile player. Played DE, OLB, and ILB in college. Played FB in high school and will be helpful on special teams. Looked good in coverage but wasn’t asked to do it very often. Despite his production he is a limited athlete. Good burst and acceleration but not great speed. When blockers get inside on him he doesn’t have the length to get off. Overly passionate player who will need to tone it down at times to avoid unnecessary penalties. Sometimes plays out of control when his emotions run high. Spent most of his time in college as an edge rusher, but projects better to ILB in the pros where his lack of athleticism won’t be exposed.
4.101. DeAndre Coleman – DE, California 6-5 314
- Huge frame with long arms and thick legs. Excellent power. Uses his arms to keep blockers off his body. Sheds blocks well. Can take on two blockers and occasionally beat both. Great athlete for his size, very quick. Tools are there, just hasn’t put it all together yet. His height can sometimes be an issue. Doesn’t always get great leverage. Doesn’t follow the QB’s eyes and get his hands up. Run stuffer only at this point. Not enough burst to make an impact as a pass rusher. Perfect fit as a two gap DE.
4.135. Michael Schofield – LG, Michigan 6-6 301
- Good frame with long arms. Patient blocker who squares up and uses leverage and position to his advantage. Anchors well and isn’t moved easily. Very aware of what is around him. Picks up extra rushers and cleans up other players’ mistakes. Competitive player who finishes blocks. Very experienced. Three year starter, one at LG and RT for the last two. Intelligent enough to play any position on the line if needed. Initial step is good but is a limited athlete with heavy feet. Average strength and power. Inconsistent hands, uses them well on one play and then holds for no reason on the next. Doesn’t move or redirect well. He will sometimes move without keeping his feet under him. Edge rushers can bring him off balance by using his momentum against him. Projects best at LG where his lack of athleticism isn’t exposed.
5.141. Ryan Carrethers – NT, Arkansas St 6-1 337
- Massive frame. Doesn’t carry a lot of bad weight. Former wrestler and it shows on the field. Anchors well and has a good center of gravity. Strong hands. Shows occasional ability to rush the passer from the inside. Dominated but at a lower level of competition. Short arms. Loses leverage at times. Doesn’t move well laterally. Not a very good athlete. Two time First Team All-Conference. Two gap nose tackle who is very difficult to move. Fits the 34.
