bah007 Pre-Combine Position Rankings

bah007

Hall of Fame
As usual, just a reminder that these are my own rankings based on what I have seen up to this point. This isn't a projection of where I think the player will be drafted. It is my ranking of where I personally value the players. You will notice that there are some big time prospects that I have rated lower than the consensus. These are guys that I do not value extremely highly but that I would still draft if the opportunity presented itself in an area of the draft where I felt comfortable with the risk. You will also notice that there are a few prospects not listed at all. Those are guys that I just do not feel comfortable with their skill set and wouldn't draft them at all.

Glad to see my guy Houma getting some well deserved love. Dude would the next Alstott if the game hadn't changed so much over the last decade.

Just FYI but Leggett announced today that he was returning for his senior year.

Our RB rankings are alot alike. I really like Dixon/Marshall

OL is very deep. Love OT Coleman and hope he's there for the Texans and Haeg.

I like WR Coleman alot more than you.

TE class is really weak. Do you think Alabama's Howard isn't coming out, or do you just not like him?

Up until this last game I was certain he would return to school so I haven't fully done my homework on him.

If he declares he will certainly make my list, but I couldn't tell you where yet. His college career has been a disappointment up until his breakout game. Great athlete though.

Where do you rank Henry Alabamans RB?.

This is the one I expected to get crushed on. Honestly, I wouldn't touch him.

I think it's fantastic what he did in college but I just do not like his skill set at all at the next level. He's gonna be a two down back only, he's not elusive off tackle, and despite his monstrous size I think he is going to have real problems getting yards between the tackles.

I'm just not interested in him. He's a good athlete for his size but I don't like his future at RB moving forward. I think he's very similar to James Wilder, who came out of Florida St two years ago, went undrafted, and is stuck on Cincinnati's practice squad. They actually had the same exact yards per carry in college, and Wilder scored TDs at a higher rate. He just had to share the backfield with two other guys while Henry got a way higher bulk of touches.

I'm not exactly predicting that for Henry's future. I do think he will get drafted. I just wouldn't be the one to do it.

Yep. Just go back and watch the 2nd half of the Clemson game. Clemson started getting a ton of penetration and he just doesn't have the feet or the athleticism in space to do anything about that. He needs a full head of steam to be effective.

How are his receiving skills? Would he make a decent H-back in the Wycheck mold?

How are his receiving skills? Would he make a decent H-back in the Wycheck mold?

He's got the catch radius of a T-Rex and like WF said, he needs a head of steam to gain traction (yards), so he's not going to catch, pivot, and go in the mold of any successful TE/H-Back. Then there's the whole idea of whether he could start from scratch learning route concepts and finding holes in spaces quickly to be effective. Hate to go out of my way taking such a dump on a kid getting his start but I just don't see it at all.

My thoughts on that are pretty much exactly what Mollywhopper said.

I don't mean to come on here and just destroy the kid. He obviously had a fantastic college career. I just don't see it at the next level.

I'm not disagreeing with y'all per say in the fact that you don't think he's a top flight NFL RB because neither do I. It always upsets me when I see college guys that a common move is to get to the edge then go up when they don't have that skill set and shouldn't be doing it. That takes forever to fix. I can't believe anyone would ever allow him to do this, but he does, and does it too much for my liking.

All that said. He's DEFINITELY got an NFL future IMO.

2 down backs are a part of the game now and he can do it better than a lot of them. He's a bigger, faster, stronger LeG Blount with a bit of coaching. And it's always preferred to be a super fast accelerator I know, but in the right 1 cut system sometimes the slower accelerators are more effective because they give time for the blocks to open up instead of getting there too soon when it's just a traffic jam. Arian Foster is a good example of this IMO.

I hate 2 down backs. I want everydown backs only, but unfortunately GMs have found a loop hole to pay RBs fraction of their worth by dividing up their work and this is the way it is moving forward. That said, I don't want this guy as a Texan because I agree he's got 2 down written all over him.

THAT SAID...I will never count out a guy with this much size, speed, and power. Trent Richardson definitely existed though, so yeah...

No Brandon Allen in top 10 qbs?

Not at the moment. However, I am intrigued by him and will have my eye on him at the Senior Bowl.

Allen had a fantastic year statistically. You'll get no argument from me there. But he is very protected in Arkansas' system and not asked to carry much load. He's only got decent physical tools but he is accurate and appears intelligent.

My main issue with Allen is that his job is too easy. That shouldn't really be a knock on Allen and is more the result of good coaching and game planning by the Arkansas coaches. But it does make him harder to evaluate. He is surrounded by studs and isn't asked to do a whole lot. He gets a lot of opportunities but there is not a lot of pressure on him. He gets a ton of easy throws and open looks due to how effectively Arkansas runs play action.

He shared the field with about nine other upperclassmen this year that will be in the NFL either this year or next. That's insane. No other QB in this class was the beneficiary of that much help, not even Coker, who plays for a loaded Alabama team.

He deserves credit for how well he played this year. He was efficient and productive. But I'd like to see him in a different environment before I sign off on him. Based on what I saw at Arkansas, he's the type of guy that won't lose you games but will have to be surrounded by a lot of talent to succeed. Most of Arkansas' big plays didn't come off his arm, even in the passing game. He would usually get an easy throw to his target and then that guy would make the play with his feet. Like I said, he deserves credit for that. But it's not that easy in the NFL. I'd have liked to see him make more contested throws, but Arkansas just didn't give him that opportunity.

Thanks for the response. I understand your point. I think it still takes a good QB to lead a team, regardless of talent surrounding him. I am very anxious to see him at the Senior Bowl.

What do you think of Brandon Doughty?

Where would you rank Bortles, Brigewater, & Carr coming out of college on this list?

No Germain Ifedi-OT or Spencer Drango-OT/OG ?

I wouldn't draft either of them. Ifedi doesn't have the feet for OT but he also gets pushed around by bigger guys so I'm not sure you want him at OG either. I think he's going to have a very difficult time at the NFL level.

I don't think Drango has the feet for OT either. I do think he has a better chance at OG. He's a better blocker. But he's so dang tall for an interior player. He might have issues with leverage.

Long story short, if I'm looking for an OT neither of these guys are on my board. If I'm looking for an OG, I'd just rather pass and take a guy I feel more comfortable with.

Off topic but how did Fawn Cooper look in the East-West Shrine game today?

I noticed him when I checked out Tunsil. This guys a player. 3rd rd guy IMHO

Hey bah, what's your consideration for Jeff Driskel? I've just gotten around to giving him something of a look. He checks off boxes when it comes to tools/measurables. Bit hard to gauge that myopic offense at LaTech though. He seems locked in a receivers often, but that seems more the system as I've seen him look off to the second or third guy successfully when the opportunity presents. I've also read just a bit about him being a good leader so I hope that makes the whole UF thing more circumstantial.

So ya, whatcha got?

To be honest, I didn't pay much attention to him this year. I had written him off after the Florida debacle. The physical tools are obviously there. He's got size, plenty of arm, and he's decently athletic.

In the past, he demonstrated solid mechanics. His drops and delivery are quick with no wasted movement, but he gets rattled by pressure and he starts to rush. His accuracy was also inconsistent outside the hashes and in the intermediate area of the field, two places where NFL QBs have to do a lot of their work and a big red flag with me.

I had an undraftable grade on him. Looking at this QB class as it is, I'll likely circle back to him at some point and try to study this season more thoroughly.

Like I said, I haven't seen a bunch of him but I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw. Rather calm in the pocket and nice ball placement both out and downfield. And of course the tools are there. I'd also like to take the UF/Will Muschamp stuff with a grain of salt. Idk, I'll keep an eye out if you find time to write him up any more.

D.J. Reader is very intriguing to me. I'd love to snag him in the 4th, but with his showing in the Senior Bowl he might just move into the 3rd. With Covington having a year under his belt, Reader could be a candidate to allow us to release Wilfork & bump Covington into the starter's role.

You want a 295 lb guy in the middle? Nobody seemed happy last time we did that and that was in Wade's penetrating D.

DJ Reader is currently listed by CBS as a late 5th or early 6th round pick, down there he's great value. I'd take him in the 4th and be happy about it. He's got good agility and short distance quickness for such a big man, and let him learn for a year while rotating with Wilfork... Reader could be the answer to our NT issues for years to come.

Misread that as putting Covington in place of Wilfork. Nvm
You were right. I did suggest Covington as the starter while Reader learns the position. I would've sworn he was 310, not 295. My mistake. In any event, he's still listed as Wilfork's backup. Maybe drafting Reader would allow us to move Covington to DE to push Crick for the starting spot. In this case, one player could help upgrade two positions.
