BADBOY's 2-7 mock

I never thought I'd type that record. I have hoped for improvement @ RT & have defended Newton, but no more. Like someone said on radio today, we should draft 6 offensive linemen to replace all the linemen who are so offensive. This mock is with us picking #5 and hoping we can win enough to remain that high. Also, based on DutchRudder's opinion on comps (two extra fives and 75% chance of a seventh).

1. OT Jake Matthews: starts at RT day one and eventual replacement for DB. I might be okay with a trade down but the offer would have to be huge.

2. ILB Yawin Smallwood: 6'3" 236 Connecticutt intelligent hard hitter who can cover, tackling machine (89 now & 120 last season with 50% solo). Like him better than Jones and AJ Johnson.

3. NT: Ryan Carrethers 6'2 330 66 T 3.5 sacks

4. CB/S: Ahmad Dixon 6' 205 4.39 can play corner or SS replaces McCain

5 a. Safety Marqueston Huff 5'11 195 played CB three season before moving to safety '13 replaces Manning.

b. DE: Kareem Martin North Carolina 6'5 265 is a gamble here that I might change as I focus more on him. He's back on my radar as seemingly gotten back in his 2012 groove. I see him behind Mitchell who replaces Ninja. Also like to see him at OLB a few times due to his quick first step. NFL strength program makes him even better. Trevardo Williams is back.

c. WR: L'Damian Washington 6'4 205 4.39 Missouri 36/680 (19 avg) 9TDs
Replaces either Martin or Jean depending on rest of our schedule. Big, fast, good hands.

6. QB: Tom Savage 6'4 230 Pitt who upset Notre Dame. I am not as up to date as I should be as I knew he had sat out 2 years and did not research why until Keenum took off & I begin looking for another "project". This kid is good but needs an Oline (sigh don't we all?). http://espn.go.com/college-football...hts-qb-tom-savage-enrolls-pittsburgh-panthers
2013 stats in a pro style O: 155/254 61% 2,022 (8 avg) 16 TDs 6 INTs

7 a. RB: George Atkinson III (yeah his son) N.D. 6'1 220 4.38 (ran a 10.36 100 m in 2012) 83/512 avg 6.2 can be KR and maybe WR.

b. CB: Phillips Gaines Rice 6' 185 4.5 2013: 25 Ts 3 INTs 2012: 18 pass breakups (2nd nationally)

OT , ILB , NT , S ..... looks a lot like my draft with different names plugged in.

I wouldn't complain with those first 4 picks.

I don't want a late round QB , just seems like a wasted pick. I'd rather take a flyer on a different position with a guy who has "an exceptional skill" like a pass rusher or return guy , think Willie Jefferson or Tricycle Holliday.

If I'm spending a pick on a QB its going to be rounds 1-3 where the guy has a reasonable chance of success .... or an UDFA who probably has just as much chance to make an impact as that 5-7th round QB who's best case scenario is probably a couple years on the practice squad.

I have been tempted to type exactly this in so many of these mock draft threads.

I definitely understand on Qb but would not want to lose Savage in UDFA to another team. He is worth a 6th and may climb to a fifth imo. A big guy with drop back in pockets skills is an exceptional skill to me. I am not wasting a top three round pick on a QB when we need so much.

Appreciate your comments.

So basically being one of the worse teams in nfl with a udfa who can't close a 2nd half and you're col with that at qb? Not only that, you're gonna spend a top 7 pick on a rt? Ok,gotcha.

I don't think think anyone has made up their minds about the QB position .... These early mocks are based upon Keenum playing relatively well despite the lack of a running game and poor OL play.

I would hate to be on the clock right now and have to make the decision to take a QB or not , glad we have 7 more games to evaluate Keenum.

i like the picks and the reasoning. although i would like to see a TE taken somewhere as i think OD want be back next year and for me graham isn't a game changer

I agree with Corrosion about the first 4 picks and would be happy with the players you picked. I also agree with aussie and think we need to get another TE as I too believe OD will be let go (cap/injury issues). Would like another big one like Griffin and wouldn't mind them picking up Fiedorowicz, but I don't think he'll make it past the 3rd round.

As to the supplemental draft picks, I don't think they get 2 5ths and a 7th. They basically lost GQ, Barwin, and Casey, and gained Reed and Lechler. Not sure how that all adds up but I don't see anymore than maybe 1 or 2 in the 6th or 7th at best. I know I was expecting a lot more this last draft and they only ended up getting 2 extra I believe. I was very disappointed. :bubbles:

Jake would be a nice consolation prize, one I would fully endorse but I would feel a little disappointed for all the QB controversy, losses & bloodshed given high expectations if Texans didn't nail a franchise QB with 1st pick :headhurts:

Need to see more film on him, Connecticut is giving up a lot of points & losing badly might be a difficult one to grade? But I like position 2-3 rds.

Ok lets bump Carrethers up to the 3rd rd. so we can address need. Player like this can either move up or down @ the combine.

McCain is not the same player he use to be post injury, lacks burst & can no longer match-up with bigger or faster WR's. I think Brandon finally fills his shoes & Dixon would be a nice add in to replace him on the depth chart.

Like your safety pick here which would be nice to fill. See how Manning recovers but can't play it too safe.

Don't really know much about Martin but Washington will be long gone with that combination of size & speed.

Like last three picks I'll try to catch some tape of them.

Another work in progress, got a great tackle, addressed middle of defense as well as secondary. Also need a edge rusher higher, & another TE thrown in for good measure.

Thanks for insight BL, yeah I want another TE also but we have too many higher priority needs imo. I think OD is gone but am ok with what we have and that Graham will be back. Might be able to get Carrethers in 4th but imo can't take a chance.

I really, really like you idea of a trade getting a second this year and another 1st 2015. Jameis Winston?

Daniels is returning from his 2nd major injury on the backside of his career, Graham is a FA and nary a TE anywhere in sight.

Graham should be cheap re-sign and I think Ryan Griffin would be as good as any 4th round or later TE. They also moved Byrne on roster.

I anticipate more attention to WR and less to TEs; just a gut thing.

I like your first 4 picks, fill definite needs with good talent. I'm not familiar with your later round guys and I have my doubts that we get 3 comp. picks. Weren't we eligible for 4 comp. picks this year and only got 2 iirc. I like your other positions chosen. My only issue with this draft is a QB that late. If Keenum is the answer, I agree there should be some insurance, but I'd take either Murray in the 2nd or McCarron in the 3rd.

Thanks, I am no comp pick guru but as said in OP that DR feel those are possible. Of course that was before Reed left so I don't know if that impacts those. The comps are end of 5th and 7th so no one should be too focused on them.

QB: If Keenum is answer, why waste a top three round pick that we desperately need? Again ifCase is starter going forward why not use a good later round guy to train up as you would a Murray or McCarron (both of whom I like)? Neither is going to start & of course it would be nice to have one of those on our bench but at the loss of what other position. As usual, Texans have too many needs with too few picks.

Even with the remainder of the season we won't truly know about Keenum, eg. see Kaepernik. If they want to bring in a serious look at potential starter their 1st 3 rounds and someone like McCarron or someone they think needs a year of development or would go higher is the way to go.

If they are looking for a developmental guy to fill out the roster then look for the next Keenum and go UDFA. There isn't much if any difference 5-7 to UDFA for QBs. They are all long shots. OTOH there are positions where really good players, possibly even best or near top of their position can be found on the 2nd day - K, P, FB, returner. There is good value at TE as well. I would also like to see the Texans take more chances on the 2nd day with guys who fall dramatically from their ability level like Da'Rick or Tyson Mathieu (sp?).

I'd take Murray or McCarron as insurance, expensive in the 2nd or 3rd but look at them as high quality developmental insurance. If Case stays healthy and develops more and becomes a franchise level QB then you've got a good backup with Murray or McCarron, not many teams have good backups. If not then you've already got developmental quality depth already on your roster which is something not all teams can say. If 6all works out right then Murray or McCarron could also be a tradeable commodity in a year or 2. Lots of teams always looking for good QB's. You can never have to many good QB's or CB's.
