If anyone here lives in Austin, you probably know CBS has been broadcasting Titans games I guess since that disasterous '05 season. Who could really blame them then? The upcoming '07 season probably has me the most excited in the short history of this franchise, but I think CBS will continue to broadcast Titans games.

What can be done?

If you do a forum search, I beleive there was some lengthy discussions with people in the Austin and SA areas that wrote to the local stations... With not much luck, as a I remember... Some folks posted their letters AND the responses that they had received from the station..

I haven't seen Big Wig around in a while, but I beleive he was one...
 
the station doesn't care..... i just switched to direct tv.... or go to a sportsbar on gamedays.
 
Tennessee is going to get stomped on this season and they'll get the "Texan Treatment" from Austin's crappy CBS affiliate.

The good news is that they usually start the season showing Houston games in hopes of a good season from my Texans. An opening week win vs. the Chefs will be a nice start. Two vs. TEN will be even better.
 
Yep, we need the Texans to do their part, win, in order to have a leg to stand on.

In my opinion if both teams, Titans and Texans, are doing poorly we will see Titans games as long as VY is taking snaps. :gun:

Yup. Austin caters to the all the VY - Longhorn homers.

I say that the Austin Chapter of the Texans Fan Club adopt Third Base as the official site of game watching.

The food is not as good as The Shoal Creek Saloon, but the Saints Fan Club has already squatted there for some time now. There are plenty of HD screens and attentive wait staff. JMHO.

I also like that have covered parking and you do not have to pay for parking.

That might be fun, Kaiser T has been there also.
I used to run everything out of the Saxon, and they fed us( for free), discounted drinks, bought us shots, waited on us hand and foot. Not to mention we had the place all to ourselves, totally rival the Shoal Creek Saloon, but when the games went awry on KEYE we just couldnt get anyone to come. I have a mailing list of at least 50 or so from these boards.
So here we are now, and I have Direct TV NFL ticket( always have), a 56" Samsung HDTV, and really dont care to spend cash when I dont need to, but if ya'll show up I will meet you for sure.

I have posted this last year while I was living in Marble Falls (Austin viewing area), but will post again. This is the response I got from them:

Thank you for writing to KEYE. Your comments go right to the heart of
what has become a rather heated topic. On one hand we have the fans of
the Houston Texans (a team we have given a great deal of support to over
the past four-and-a-half seasons) and on the other hand we have a large
number of Austin football fans who are equally as vocal and want to see
the Titans games.

The last Texans game we aired (last Sunday) was tuned-in by just 21,000
households in Austin (a city with 589,000 households). By comparison,
the Titans game we aired on Oct 8th (after Vince Young became
quarterback) was watched by over 53,000 households (152% more football
fan's homes). At one point during that game there were as many as 68,000
households tuned in. It was the most-watched "early" game we've aired
all season. Actually, that game was watched by more Austin fans than any
Texans game we've aired going all the way back to October of last season
- with two notable exceptions. The first is when the Texans played the
Cowboys on October 15th (which you could expect to be highly watched)
and the other, honestly, was when the Texans played the Titans on
October 29th.

I am not bringing up these facts in order to belittle the Texans. (I can
assure you, there is no one on the surface of the planet that wants the
Houston Texans to succeed more than KEYE). I bring up these facts only
to add some perspective to what is a truly difficult situation (for both
the television station and the fans). Obviously, no one forces anyone to
watch anything - people "choose" what they want to see. And, if you view
these numbers (as we must) in terms of serving people with programming
they want to watch - then you have a real problem when you see that the
two most-watched (most-chosen) Texans games in the past umpteen games
were when they played the Cowboys and the Titans.

So, where does all this leave us now? To try and answer that, we need to
go back to the start. In the Texans' first season KEYE aired every
Texans game we could get our hands on. In the second season we did the
same thing, no matter how bad the actual football games were, and in the
third season we did it yet again. (No one could claim that KEYE hadn't
done its best to put Texans games on the air in Austin).

In the fourth season, last year, we aired every Texans game we could -
even after it was abundantly clear they would have their worst season to
date. What was once just a steady flow of email to the station
(questioning why the heck we were airing Texans games when there was
much better competition) had become a roar that we simply could no
longer ignore. In that season we aired every Texans game we could in
August, September, October, and November. Our last Texans game was
December 4th with just 15,000 households watching, and then we moved on
to other games that had actual play-off implications. The very next
non-Texans game we aired that year was tuned-in by almost 75,000 homes.
In other words, we did the best we could do.

That is pretty much where we are today. KEYE has not jumped ship on the
Texans. KEYE has no plans to jump ship on the Texans. However, in light
of what the majority of FANS who watch football are telling us with
THEIR choices, it is clear that we have to have some balance when it
comes to picking games. One point of view we hear all the time is "to
heck with the Texans, put on the best, most competitive game every
week". While that is an admirable plan, the fact is that KEYE has made
an effort to build the Texans franchise in Austin, and we owe it to
those fans to keep their games in mind. At the same time, we now have an
even larger audience of Vince Young/Titans fans which we must also serve
- not to mention the fans who just simply want to see the best game of
football they can find on a Sunday afternoon.

As it stands right now, we cannot guarantee that we will air Texans
games just because they're Texans games. We can't make that guarantee to
Titans fans either. For the remainder of the season we are going to
continue to strike a balance and (as we have done in the past) try to
serve all our football viewers to the best of our ability (even as we
know that we can never please everybody all the time). We make our game
choices two weeks out from the day of the game, and will continue to
post our match-ups on the various television guides.

As a fellow fan, what we need more than anything right now is for the
Texans to start playing with confidence and start winning some games.
Just looking at the bare-bones facts from these past four-and-a-half
seasons, it is easy to see that KEYE is pulling for them to do just
exactly that.

OK, so as the season approaches, let us coordinate activating the Texans Fan Club of Austin. Meanwhile, I'll see about getting some sort of commitment from Third Base: I'd like to see them advertise or promote as the "official" Texans place to watch in Austin, ala Shoal Creek for the Saints. As a countermeasure to K-EYE uncertainty, we will absolutely need Sunday Ticket. I know there are other places in town that carry the Sunday Ticket, but Third Base would be optimal first shot given the location, free parking (good call!), and brew selection.

Dang, sounds like Texans fans are the real Rodney Dangerfields of Austin. You're behind the Cowboys, Titans, & even the Saints in the peking order over there ?
And to think, Big Bobby McNair was an astute businessman who you'd think has some feel for PR ? Whatever goodwill his team had at the beginning, its all gone now and he's gonna have to earn every fan back.

Although dont promise too much in the beginning, we have had crowds at the Saxon from 3 to 30!

Agree completely about McNair. I think that he should try to market to other Texas cities outside of Houston.

The Saints don't have a real big fanbase in Austin per se, they just have a fan club that's carved a pretty deep niche.

It is tough from a broadcast standdpoint. However, the owner of the Shoal Creek Saloon is a Saints fan who just happens to have a great location and runs a great bar. Not to mention his love to show everyone that he is a Saints fan.

I think we will see alot more Texans games here locally this year. The titans are bound to have a lousy year given their less that stellar off-season. At least that is my hope. And since most of feel/hope/pray the Texans keep improving and have a chance at .500, that should help keep us on the air.

If not, Khari nailed it, sportsbar or Directv.

I am on Big Wig's list as well so I will keep an eye for any gameday activities.

Well I can see this is going well, no one has set up anything or even posted if they did. Just like old times, there is a lot of talk but no do.
Rickyb what happened to the connection or setup at 3rd base?
I spent many years working with the Saxon Pub, getting the email list posting threads, sending invites, heck even offered my home with a big screen and pool and no one ever really showed up. The Saxon was even giving us grub for free, and opening early on sunday just for Texan fans, and we were the only ones in there. With all that still most of the time no one showed.
It took me a long time to get graced with the title of President of the Austin- Texans fan club, etc. it wasnt easy. It looks like this year will be the same unless some drastic changes happen. So many people post " I wanna come and meet" I wanna go" " Why cant we have a watch party "? etc. but no one ever shows.
One last time if someone wants to really get serious about this send me an email and I will work with you. If not I hope I never see any posts again about Austin Fans not getting their props. I do want this to happen I just dont have time to hound people to get involved.

Tis true that time is on our side although we do need to secure a site, as sometimes it can take awhile based on marketing and so forth.

Today, I met Shelley, Events Manager for Third Base Austin. She says:
o we are the first NFL fan club to approach 3B;
o they have the ability to support us, with 5 audio/visual "zones" in the bar, and the NFL Sunday Ticket;
o she gave me the email addresses of the A/V Manager and the GM, for me to follow-up.

What do you guys want? Let me know, and I will ask for it. Within reason. If you say "free beer or food", I'm just not going to do anything with that. Here are a couple of suggestions, feel free to add:
o guarantee to show Houston Texans football game each week
o 3 reserved tables each week with prime viewing, held until gametime.

I figure if we show out in droves, that they will naturally gravitate toward marketing 3B as the "official sports bar" of the Houston Texans Fans of Austin. So, ultimately, that is on us.

I'll keep you posted.

Oh...and the Dos Equis was cold. Mmm. Beer. :homer:

That sounds gr8. there is no need to push our luck on the grub. Besides it was always a bummer to waste a nice buzz eating at halftime.
I think the items listed are all we can ask fro at this time.
Now do we want to start with preseason or just regular season?
Remember also all of our games are at noon.
Usually we didnt have much of a crowd for home games as most had season tix.
So with that said lets get a roll call going , maybe on another thread and see what can be drummed up here. Thanks Rickyb

I'd very much like to start for preseason but those probably won't be showing on the television and would be a small gathering but this can be a very good thing. We can at least check out the club ourselves and see how we like it. How we like their service. How the bartenders look (don't worry girls, I'm sure they'll have a male bartender for you to gaze upon:shades: ). Check out the parking and so on and on and on. Then we can bring our opinions on the location right here and discuss it within eachother.

Don't worry about the free grub and booze. I've worked the club scene for the last 12 years in Houston (I was a valet. I'm now a school teacher. Talk about a hefty career change!) and I think we'd be getting ahead of ourselves here. Based on my experiences, it's always a bad move to try and ask for freebies at the beginning. What we really need to do is get a season under our belt or at least half of a season before we go asking for goodies. We have to show that we're there to spend money and once they see that we really have a large following, they will then begin to proudly 'sponsor' the fan club label and from there we'll most likely begin to get our goodies such as discounted pitchers/wells and so on.

THEN if we prove ourselves to be a large following, you can bet on them wanting to retain the fan club label. We just have to show up and bring our credit cards for the first few weeks. It's really more about advertising for them more than anything else and what better place to advertise a fan club than Texanstalk.com (I don't mean THEY advertise here. I meant like us scheduling our events here ourselves and then mentioning the location which will be Third Base)! They'll love it!

Then again, they may not ever offer any goodies.
 
Cool, guys. I realize it's only 2 responses, but the thoughts you express (not asking for freebies; turning out the vote to support the Texans at 3B; etc) are so in-line with my own, I feel comfortable now moving forward with contacting the GM.

It's really a great bar. LOTS of HD screens. And I mean LOTS. The "5 zone" concept the Event Manager described was INTRIGUING. Can you imagine? Texans v Jags, and BOTH fan clubs are there enjoying the game? (As I said, we are still the first and only NFL fan club to approach 3B.) That would be awesome. I mean, if the UT v A&M basketball game can go off without a fight, I'm sure grown adult football fans can too. :pirate:

Call be a goof ball, but the one thing I seriously love is the parking at 3base, you do not have to worry about trying to find it they have covered parking right there and it is free. That sold me on the place right then and there.

I saw the Dela Hoya fight there, plus I have gone for dinner after work a few times and have enjoyed it. One time I tried to get the Astros and for some reason early in the season it was blocked out, but they could show it if they did the four split screen action (really odd) but they did that so I could watch my Astros lose (I think they lost that night, oh well good bet they did).

I like the idea of making sure each game is shown and 3 tables reserved as a strat and if we can get more people coming then of course get more tables and set ups.
 
This morning I sent off the email to the GM of Third Base, with A/V Manager and Event Manager in cc. I will let you know when I hear back.

Should this go through, this will be big for us. Third Base is a top-flight sports bar. Let' hope they want to support a local pro sports team. It will then be up to us to spread the word and to get out there and spend $$.

I'll bet that preseason games are out over there.

IIRC, they didn't even show Texans preseason games in Austin last year.

Hope I'm wrong about this year.

I confirmed this with 3B yesterday. They have it. If they had not, this would have been a deal breaker. The Texans Fans in Austin shall not be at the mercy of the VY homers at K-EYE.

Period.
 
This is looking good. I wouldnt promise too much for the preseason as far as fans showing up, I could be wrong.
I will acitvate " THE LIST" before the 1st regular season game, its looking like a really cool deal, too bad I paid for the Ticket at home ( have been for years now), guess that means I get to watch more games in the second half of the day when I get home.:fans:
 
I heard back from the GM of Third Base. She liked the proposal, but suggests that we email her each Friday to confirm that we will be coming.

This is reasonable to me, if not cumbersome.

My hope is that, over time, 3B will drop that request -- it's going to suck for that person to remember to email each Friday.

I saw a thread about Houston watch parties, and the thought of changing pubs. I'm going to ask those guys/gals what sort of commitment they got, if any, from their chosen venue.

I'm talking about preseason games. Last I heard, the NFL Ticket doesn't show preseason games. The teams themselves broadcast the preseason games.

Somebody feel free to prove me wrong.

Going forward "The List" will be exclusively referred to as "The List"....this is not optional, compliance is mandatory......resistance is futile.
 
According to the Texans website, it looks like KEYE is the broadcast affiliate again for the preseason.

IIRC, they gave the Texans the boot when there was a scheduling conflict with a Cowboys preseason game. I think that Time-Warner Cable played the Texans game on channel 77.

Looks like the only time that might happen again will be on the 30th. They play Minnesota and we play Tampa Bay. Both games kick off at 7 PM CDT.

I had a PM discussion with Yank, who informs me that they have zero commitment from their chosen location in Houston.

The 3B folks are willing to work with us, are top-notch, have great viewing and A/V zones to support multiple games, and great parking. I think it is reasonable that they get an email heads-up each Friday, to give a budgetary head-count. Their interest is to fairly support as many patrons as possible. It would be on us to show up.

I'm sure that over time, we'll grow, the Texans fans in Austin will rally (we should market even outside of this fan forum!), and ultimately our having to email 3B will become moot. Rabid attendance will be a given.

But, let the journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step. Grasshopper. :)
 
3B is a great place and the parking is a huge value add. Count me in for Carolina (yes that is ACL weekend, but it is a quick bike ride away). I have to wait for my soccer schedule until I can commit to any others.

Appreciate the diligence in making this come to fruition. :texflag:
