You will see a message on your TV that the dispute between the Channel 11 owner company and U-verse / DirecTV is ongoing.

How DirecTV, U-Verse subscribers can watch KHOU amid retransmission dispute
David Barron Dec. 3, 2020 Updated: Dec. 3, 2020 1:55 p.m.

KHOU has been off DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse systems since Tuesday night as the result of a retransmission rate dispute between AT&T and station owner Tegna.

There’s no update Thursday morning on the continued retransmission squabble between AT&T and Tegna that has resulted in Tegna stations, including CBS affiliate KHOU (Channel 11), being unavailable on DirecTV and AT&T U-verse.

There is, however, a possible workaround for Channel 11 viewers who wish to continue watching Channel 11’s local news programs, its CBS prime time lineup and sports events such as the Alabama-LSU game Saturday night and the Colts-Texans game Sunday afternoon.

Houston is one of 25 television markets around the country serviced by Locast, a nonprofit local broadcast streaming service that can be accessed via the Internet or through DirecTV or U-verse boxes connected to smart TVs.

ALSO SEE: KHOU goes dark for DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse subscribers

By registering at Locast.org, Houston area viewers can access 36 local channels, including all the major English- and Spanish-language network affiliates. That list includes Channel 11.

To see if Locast is available on your smart TV, click the right arrow on your DirecTV remote control and watch for a list of available apps to appear on the screen. Click on the Locast app, and you’ll be able to access instructions on how to register for the service. Once you confirm an e-mail address, you can watch Channel 11 via your DirecTV box or Locast.com.

Locast says it operates under the Copyright Act of 1976, which allows nonprofit translator services to rebroadcast local stations such as Channel 11 without receiving a copyright license from the broadcaster.

However, the law also allows nonprofits to collect a fee to cover operations costs. Locast asks viewers to donate $5 or more per month for operating costs.

And therein rests the only potential catch for Channel 11 viewers who are shut off DirecTV and U-verse for the time being: Much as PBS has pledge breaks, Locast transmits a request for donations every 15 minutes. Once you agree to pay $5 or more, the messages are removed.

Locast and the major networks are engaged in litigation regarding the Locast service, but it remains available in 25 markets, including Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas.

Channel 11 went dark on DirecTV and AT&T U-verse Tuesday night as AT&T, which owns DirecTV and U-verse, continue to negotiate with Tegna, which owns Channel 11 and stations in 50 other U.S. TV markets, over the fees that AT&T pays to rebroadcast Tegna stations on its service.

Each has accused the other of seeking unfair retransmission fees and of taking advantage of customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Locast launched in January 2018 and has been available in Houston since the fall of 2018. The company said it has 1.7 million registered users.

It can be accessed at locast.org and via app stores, TiVo, Google Play, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon, Roku, Dish Hopper/Wally receivers and select DirecTV receivers.

There are plenty of free direct links online; cough tonight’s boxing. Inbox some of us if that one gets removed.

Computer and HDMI cable hooked to 70 inch 4k TV for the couple games not on locally out of San Antonio.
Elsewise, I watch it through youtube tv.
Then i rewatch on NFL game pass.

According to this guy, it appears you can still watch Sunday Ticket for every game except local ones..

Yep, if you’ve got a browser on your smart TV you’re all set, if DTV hadn’t given me the NFL Max package for free this year “because I’m such a great customer” BS I would’ve streamed the games like I did last couple years. The delay is usually only 15 seconds or so but hey it’s free

So I watched the game Sunday on our desktop but couldn't get it on the TV as only some kind of "Channell 11 NEWS feed" from KHOU was available to me on the TV ? I have U-verse, not direct TV.
Got into a chat session at the Locast.org site this morning and a dude identifying himself as "Sebastion" (foregein accent) said he could activate channel 11 for me on my TV for 49.99 USD. - said thanks, but no thanks !

My patience has worn very thin and down to life support. I enjoyed Uverse for years but grew weary of negotiating the rate every six months. Was offered a good price to switch to DirectTV that ATT began promoting and switched. I didn’t like the service issues every time it rained, then of course later came the rate increases.

I switched back to UVerse and was dismayed upon learning they no longer carried NFL Network, omg now I must cope. I had no idea that this Tegna situation would become a reality, and now going into week two.

During the upcoming holidays, I will be exploring my options, and I don’t see ATT being a part of them.

YouTube TV is available and works well. It literally records everything including games.

Lol, what year were you aiming for? And how bad did you miss?
About 70 million years. I was gonna get a boatload of dinosaur eggs and drop them all over the jungles in present day South America and Africa and watch everyone go batshit. It's kind of like trolling on the internet, sometimes fcking with people is just fun. :)

These socalled "execs" running the U-verse network & channel 11 are behaving like a bunch of pols or maybe even the post office !
This is Texas, and people care deeply about football here and now going into the heart of the season in a pandemic year they seem to
be intent on alienating their customers with their ineptitude instead of expeditiously coming to a resolution on their issues.

How much of a hassle is it to install an antenna on ones TV ?
Doesn't have to be on the roof does it, I dunno is there some kind of internal antenna one can install ?

HD antennas install direct to a port on your TV. The antenna itself is small and usually sits only a few feet from your TV, preferably close to a window.

Amazon antennas : https://www.amazon.com/s?k=tv+antenna&rh=n:172665,p_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:6025771011&dc&qid=1607783786&rnid=6025770011&ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin_1

FYI, U-verse will be phased out shortly. ATT is trying to auction off DirecTV because of tremendous losses (a lot to due with poor reception with poor weather). A sell off with Dish was nixed by the DOJ. ATT is trying to shift everyone to ATTV......single home receiver service, which will essentially shift responsibility to owner re. hardware and maintenance expenses.

Thanks Thorn !
When it comes to electronics I'm a bozo, so even for somebody like me is an installation reasonably doable ?
Which one do you recommend Thorn ?

Huh, interesting ?
Pretty sure CBS has the SB this year so looks like I may need to look else where if I want to watch it in my home, not to mention the rest of the football season including NFL P/Os.

Sounds good, however, I don’t have a smart TVs. I want one, and have planned for one, but all of my TVs refuse to stop working, and they are all very old.
I have 2 roku Ultras, they work great. You could try that until you decide to upgrade to colored tv :kitten:
Youtubetv is great. Hulutv isn't. Never tried roku or firestick setups but I hear good things.
I have the rokus, and they work great,
Thanks Thorn !

There's no such thing as an "hd" antenna. It's just a marketing ploy. Hell, until I bought the rokus, i was using rabbit ears from the 70's and was able to pick up everything in great quality.
So basically, just buy the cheapest one and not fall for the marketing claims.

Not hard at all.

It can sit next to your TV and has 100 or so channels. It's actually kinda cool.

Costs about $20/25 bucks for an antenna.

Don't spend over $30, and don't think it will bring in ALL the broadcast channels. On mine I get 2, 11, and 13 great, channel 26 most of the time and rarely does PBS work. These antennas will have a cable that will attach to the cable port in the back of your TV.
