Mike Sherman's mere presence in the Texans' franchise is expected to have as much of an impact on the team as his advice. After a patient wait by first-year head coach Gary Kubiak, Sherman agreed to sign a three-year contract making him the Texans' assistant head coach/offense.
Already, Kubiak has been busy fielding calls from current Texans' players saying how excited they are that Sherman is on the coaching staff. Sherman will take part in different offensive meetings, but his main priority will be in helping oversee the coaching of the offensive line with line coach John Benton.
"Gary is one of the very few people I would have entertained doing this with because I sincerely want to see him be successful," said Sherman. "I know he will be, and hopefully I can be a part of that in some small way."
Sherman had every intention of taking the year off after he failed to be hired for any of the head coach openings after he was fired from the Packers following their 4-12 season. But Sherman changed his mind after talking with Texans owner Bob McNair and Kubiak.
With Sherman's reputation around the league, the Texans will have a hard time keeping him past a year, but no one is worried about that at this point. The Texans are simply appreciative of any time they have with him.
"This is big time," Kubiak said. "Here's a presence - walking into our locker room and our meetings - of success in this league. That's what we're looking for. So it gives us another guy to show us how to do it."
"Right now, I've been impressed with the players on film," new defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "They played hard. It's not like you look at film and are like, 'God, there's not much effort here.' Do we need to fill some spots, yeah, and we'll try to get that. But we've been impressed with many of the pieces already here."

If Bakersfield, Calif., had a professional football team when I was coming out of school, I think the feeling would probably be pretty similar. In the draft and free agency, the Texans will need to try to find pass-rushing defensive ends. The team right now is set for a 3-4 defense, not a 4-3. With the change inevitable, they must get new personnel to fill out the depth chart and possibly even find a couple of new starters.
1. Defensive ends: The Texans will likely move outside linebacker Antwan Peek to defensive end, but all of the Texans' current linemen are tackles. Jason Babin could make the shift to the line, but he's somewhat small. Regardless, the Texans will need to add depth behind Peek and Babin.
2. Tight end: Few teams have utilized the tight end as a receiver as much as the Texans. They will seek out a receiving-threat tight end that can get open in the middle and help free up wide receiver Andre Johnson.
3. Guard: The Texans should find they have a left tackle in Chester Pitts but could boost their offensive line at guard. They lack depth there.
