Article on Texans/Sherman...

Mike Sherman's mere presence in the Texans' franchise is expected to have as much of an impact on the team as his advice. After a patient wait by first-year head coach Gary Kubiak, Sherman agreed to sign a three-year contract making him the Texans' assistant head coach/offense.

Already, Kubiak has been busy fielding calls from current Texans' players saying how excited they are that Sherman is on the coaching staff. Sherman will take part in different offensive meetings, but his main priority will be in helping oversee the coaching of the offensive line with line coach John Benton.

"Gary is one of the very few people I would have entertained doing this with because I sincerely want to see him be successful," said Sherman. "I know he will be, and hopefully I can be a part of that in some small way."

Sherman had every intention of taking the year off after he failed to be hired for any of the head coach openings after he was fired from the Packers following their 4-12 season. But Sherman changed his mind after talking with Texans owner Bob McNair and Kubiak.

With Sherman's reputation around the league, the Texans will have a hard time keeping him past a year, but no one is worried about that at this point. The Texans are simply appreciative of any time they have with him.

"This is big time," Kubiak said. "Here's a presence - walking into our locker room and our meetings - of success in this league. That's what we're looking for. So it gives us another guy to show us how to do it."

"Right now, I've been impressed with the players on film," new defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "They played hard. It's not like you look at film and are like, 'God, there's not much effort here.' Do we need to fill some spots, yeah, and we'll try to get that. But we've been impressed with many of the pieces already here."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "As far as the fans, I think I can pretty much understand where they are coming from. If Bakersfield, Calif., had a professional football team when I was coming out of school, I think the feeling would probably be pretty similar. I definitely understand that." -- QB David Carr, when asked about the overwhelming support in Houston for the Texans to draft hometown hero Vince Young.

In the draft and free agency, the Texans will need to try to find pass-rushing defensive ends. The team right now is set for a 3-4 defense, not a 4-3. With the change inevitable, they must get new personnel to fill out the depth chart and possibly even find a couple of new starters.

1. Defensive ends: The Texans will likely move outside linebacker Antwan Peek to defensive end, but all of the Texans' current linemen are tackles. Jason Babin could make the shift to the line, but he's somewhat small. Regardless, the Texans will need to add depth behind Peek and Babin.

2. Tight end: Few teams have utilized the tight end as a receiver as much as the Texans. They will seek out a receiving-threat tight end that can get open in the middle and help free up wide receiver Andre Johnson.

3. Guard: The Texans should find they have a left tackle in Chester Pitts but could boost their offensive line at guard. They lack depth there.

Didn't we cut Billy Miller because the coaching staff felt we didn't need a recieving TE? I know that might change with the new staff, but I just didn't think we used the TE that much around here the last few years...idonno:

I thought they cut him because he couldn't block, I maybe wrong though, but I agree with you about us not using a TE, probably because we have never had a TE who can block and catch.

Billy Miller was a good receiving TE, but when he was on the field, he was liability in blocking. He was not exceptional either. If you put a safety on him, he was as good as covered. Then when we got Bruener, it became pretty obviouse that when Miller was in the game, we were going to pass.

We had one. Anybody remember Billy Miller? Maybe if we say we are real sorry he would come back?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Billy Miller out of the league at this point? To me that suggests that cutting him wasn't such a disastrous move.

Putzier was a reasonably significant factor in Denver's passing game, so clearly Kubiak isn't averse to using a receiving tight end, if we acquire one, or if Joppru . . . no. No, let's not even go there. That said, it's perfectly possible to be a good team without one (the 15-1 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers spring to mind), so I can't imagine it's a top priority as compared to OL, DE, MLB or DB. If one drops to us in rounds 2-4 and we think it's a good place to take him, we will, but I don't expect to see us pursuing a major free agent or trying to make a trade.

I'm doubt Browns fans remember him...he wasn't good enough to stick with them for a season.

Can we ban all things that use Fox as a source? What film or video game was the reporter watching? I like the tidbits on Sherman and Smith, but where the heck did they come up with those anecdoites for DE and TE.

I didn't think that the examples were so far off the mark ..... but that's just me

So you would agree that Babin is "somewhat small" compared to Peek and few teams have utilized the TE in passing situations more than us?

The section below

is not in the article. Please follow the link to verify. I assume it was added by the message poster.

I agree with this in principle. Babin doesn't have the speed to be a successful DE at his size....

2. Tight end: Few teams have utilized the tight end as a receiver as much as the Texans. They will seek out a receiving-threat tight end that can get open in the middle and help free up wide receiver Andre Johnson.

The first sentence obviously has a typo or word omission. The second sentence bears this out.

Chuck, there are tabs at the top of the article that you can navigate to catch all of the information. I do not think my take is off base on using this as a source since it is ripe with misinformation/typos and has Babin somewhat small but assumes Peek is big enough.

I would not go to any of those either for sports. Fox is lame for sports information, but then anything that Rupert Murdoch feeds us is lame in my opinion.
