Art Shell

I just heard on ESPN's Cold PiZZa that Art Shell would be a top consideration for the Texans head coaching job if Capers gets the axe.
Any thoughts...?

Hmmmm... A Hall of Fame Offensive Tackle as the Texans next coach. Sounds interesting, but I don't think he is the right man. Wait until the offseason to pick up a young guy (Kubiak, Gray) that can relate better to today's NFL prima dona.

I may be mistaken, but hasn't he been out of coaching for a 10 years? Not sure if he has even worked as an assistant since leaving the Raiders.

I remember him standing on the sidelines, with his mouth hanging open, looking much like Capers. He was an Al Davis "YES" man. We have already tried this approach. Lets not try it again.

Was a great lineman, though.

Love Art Shell but if Im correct he's been working the NFL office for quite a bit now. Not sure if he'd even want to step into such a poultry job.

Yeah not sure this is the direction we want to go for a coach since most people here can agree that development of players has been an issue. And I do not know enough of his history to comment on him being in our front office.

We are going to hear every name available to coach this team (except perhaps the director of FEMA...he already has a cush job) in the coming months....let the names start rolling in.

He is the assistant VP of football operations for the NFL. He had a 56-41 record while coaching the Raiders and 3 playoff appearances in 5 seasons. And he was an assistant coach for the Chiefs and Falcons after leaving the Raiders.

I am aware of his success as a player and head coach. I am just syaing that being out of player development for so long is not excatly the type of persn we need to bring in.

George Bush (either one) would get this team rolling

Yeah, he would get them rolling on a plane to Iraq. Of course that is too dangerous because then we might lose over there as well.

Just a general question, but what's happened to Ron Wolfe? After what happened with him in Cleveland I haven't heard much about him. Any chance he might take a similar position that he was prepared to take in Cleveland here in Houston? He was always a good evaluator of talent for GB.

He just got a contract extension and he is married to Bellicheck's daughter.

yes, but is she pretty?

Everyone says we have hot cheerleaders.. lets put them to work :yahoo:

How about the Cowboys Sean Payton? He seems to be doing really well and he's worked under some great coaches over the years.

Either way he'd be out of his mind to leave and come here.

I agree wrestler4life but maybe there is oil under reliant stadium. After all weren't there WMD's in Iraq. I'm sure he can find them....You just gotttta believe brother either that or way for :pigfly:

Doubtful but here's a disconcerting thought. What if there's "Oiler" under Reliant Stadium? Could putting the new stadium so close to the old one possibly cause a carry-over effect? Are the Texans not only fighting the usual expansion team problems but a left-over Columbia Blue curse as well? The answer may surprise you-- I have no idea. What I do know is that if Reliant Stadium and/or the Houston Texans have some "Oiler" on them then we need to get that cleaned off of there stat!

I doubt it. The Texans aren't good enough to be like the Oilers were. The Oiler Curse got your hopes up and dashed them at the last minute. Now if the Texans went 10-6, made the playoffs and choked every year then I would buy into this.

I think it is safe to say the Oiler Curse is doing good and well in Nashville.

When Capers was hired one of the reasons given was "he's had experience starting new teams". When I heard that I said whoa! Just because he had experience with Carolina in 1995 certainly did not mean he was the best man for the job! A closer look at Capers short comings which lead to the Panther's firing him are now showing themselve here! Dom Capers if anything should have been hired as someones DC....how many opportunities will he get to prove he's NOT a head coach!

You know why this is being mentioned? Because Art has long been the token black interview for teams, and they want it to sound like he's a legitimate canidate.

It's more of a shame he subjects himself to these token interviews.

He won't be your coach, you can count on that.

He might not be our next head coach, but Art Shell is the one who said HE would like to get back into coaching and that HE would be interested in the job with the Texans if it were available. It's not like he interviews for every head coaching position available just to make the NFL happy.

FYI--the tax discussion has been split off into a thread called Tax Cuts in the No Spin Zone of No Sports Talk. Feel free to continue the discussion over there.
