Armstrong as #2 WR is not so far fetched

I didnt see anyone mention this.. sorry if its already been posted.

Alot of people were asking "why do you think Armstrong could be our #2, we know nothing about him and he hasnt proven anything. We need speed at the position" etc..etc.. well I just wanted to point out this quote.

The slot opposite Johnson in the Texans’ offense is wide open. As is the case with others positions, head coach Dom Capers has opened up competition for the job, refusing to award anyone the duty quite yet. Armstrong and Bradford are the front-runners, but a slew of other receivers could emerge.

So.. it is Armstrong and Bradford at the top of the list of the WRs competing for the #2 spot.. so I guess its not so far fetched after all.

Interesting that Gaffney isnt up there.. but he is recovering from surgery.. so maybe he just isnt at the top yet because he hasnt fully recovered.. or.. maybe they think that he is best suited for his role in the slot, where he has been tearing stuff up.

I type this probably a dozen times a month...but Gaffney and Armstrong will be in the slot and Mathis and Bradford will fight for the other WR position since our base offense has been a 3 WR set for the most part. We need speed on the outside and Gaffney and Armstrong do well with curls, hooks, comebacks, and finding dead spots in the zone...all slot stuff for the most part.

well I hear ya saying that Vinny but that doesnt really explain why they have him as one of the frontrunners for the #2 spot...?

if they make him #2 would they then make Bradford or Mathis #3?

Personally.. I think that with this new emphasis put on getting the ball out of Carr's hands quickly.. a slot style receiver with good hands, who can snatch the ball out of the air.. (like armstrong) may be a big benefit to us.

Im pushin for Armstrong at #2.

We run so much 3wr I don't think it matters too much about wr2 or 3. By game 1 Gaff and Armstrong will be inside working the shorter, inside mostly linebacker/S zones with the faster guys stretching the field on the outside. By the end of the year the slot player may have more catches but the outside WR likely has more big plays and TD’s. I think everyone is reading way too much into every little thing printed. Camp will decide what needs to be decided. We have a good mix of guys with different skills. The key is getting the best out of each.

I would think Gaffney would be the #2 WR but after reading this it is looking like Armstrong and Bradford will have a better shot at it...

-- Gaffney OUT Until August --
Tue Jun 14, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com

The Houston Chronicle reports Texans WR Jabar Gaffney, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, likely will not join team drills until sometime in August.

Amrstrong is good but it will most likely be inthe same order it has been with AJ,Gaff, and Bradford

Don't forget about their ability to block downfield. Whoever shows that they can do that well will get the brownie (mmm...brownies :homer: ) points in the decision process. Gaffney is good @ it and is probably best that we have. Something to think about when we're ahead and trying to run out the clock.

I'm very high on Armstrong. I've only seen good things from him. His presence makes the threads about going and getting Price or Robinson that much more comical. From my perspective, we have the potential to have one of the top 4 or 5 best WR corps in the league. We have good depth, some great speed, very good hands, and AJ has elite abilities. It should be a great strength for our team the next few years.

I agree. I believe we have a very good receiver corp. AJ is just a freak, Bradford has great speed although he seemed to dissapear for games at a time last season. Gaff and Armstrong have amazing hands. Mathis could be awesome if he can catch the ball decently. I cant wait to see Mathis on the field. I would actually like to see us in a couple of 5 wide out sets this year.
