Are all ok?

Sounds like i may not get sent somewhere else just yet, but will happen in the coming days/weeks. About to sit down for dinner. They are feeding us quite well tonight. I'll make this quick.

Scourge,

Call me. I sent you a PM.

We have several Blue Crew members that live in your area and we may be able to help the wife out by taking some batteries or anything else that she needs.

We are all a Texans family and I really appreciate the hard work you have put out.

Thanks, I'll try and get in touch with you soon. Need to find out first where i will be located next.

I hope the electric workers are getting paid double time for their efforts.

The linemen do get double time... but if you are salary, it is straight time. And unfortunately for me, I have moved on to a salary position. But you would never tell from the things i am doing now, and my current appearance. i kinda smell, too...

The highest death toll that I have seen is 31. How can there be so many bodies floating around?
There are hundreds, if not thousands still unaccounted for. But more importantly, how many bodies is it that you feel are too many? I think 1 is too many.

Safe and sound in Bellaire. :)
Yeah, Bellaire is doing pretty well. But that is all politics. It's all about who your neighbors happen to be. The people with power, get power quick.

And one last thing, even though he may not mean it that way, I am getting irritated hearing Rick Perry repeatedly saying the power isn't getting fixed fast enough. We gave an honest time frame, but still that wasn't good enough. If he would like, he can come out with us and give us a hand. I'll give him a hard hat and let him just ride in the truck. That way, when I jump out to do some actual work, he can watch as people begin to swarm around and ask how long it's gonna be. Then see how he reacts as they freak out about what he says if he says anything longer than 24 hours. I don't think he has any idea what it takes to get the power back. It's not like we are trying to go slow. We are out of power too, and from a company stand point, we aren't making any money if the meters aren't spinning. Louisiana still isn't back to 100% from Gustav. I imagine we may be complete before they are.

We even received crews from Canada today as well. For the first time in my life, I got excited to see a line of big trucks with Canadian flags waving in the wind.

gotta go, lines are getting long..

We have ELECTRICITY!!!! I LOVE ELECTRICITY!!!!

For those who are still waiting, I hope you get your's back really soon! I know how happy I am right now. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning!

I know there are lots of very unfortunate people who have much bigger issues with this storm than just being inconvenienced, so I am sorry for celebrating so much!

Thanks scourge for all your information and updates!

You guys are doing the best you can do and that's all you can do . Keep up the good work and be safe .

I might have an extra generator for someone that is in DIRE need of it. if you know someone let me know.

Guys - is it safe to drink the tap water in N.Houston/Spring area right now? I have a friend who needs to know and he has no access to internet or really anything else right now.

The comment about the canucks was awesome.

God bless you, sir, and be safe.

Houston – Sept. 16, 2008 – As of 9:28 p.m., CenterPoint Energy reported that it reached another restoration milestone having restored power to 750,000 customers within three full days. The company now reports that 38 percent of its 2.26 million customers have power.
“Our crews, working with the thousands of mutual assistance crews who have joined us from across North America, are making outstanding progress,” said Kenny Mercado, senior vice president of Electric Operations. “We will continue, however, to work around the clock until everyone’s power is restored.” “As we gather and enter additional information, we will soon be able to project restoration times for specific geographic areas.”

Houston – Sept. 16, 2008 – Based on new damage assessment data, the company projects that in the next seven days it will have restored power to 50 to 75 percent of those customers who lost power from Hurricane Ike. A total of 8,000 linemen and tree trimmers from 31 states and Canada will be assisting CenterPoint Energy’s 3,000 employees. All will work around the clock until the power is fully restored.

I know that most will find that somewhat disheartening to hear, but we are making progress.

Will update some more again as I get new info and have a few minutes to write. Not very easy or really convenient to post, but I feel it is necessary as so many of you are spread out in the area and can spread the word to people who have no way of reading this. Ted is right, we all are family

Take care.

Scourge, even for a non-Houstonian your information is much appreciated. Sounds like you guys are working your ass off, and even though some of you are not getting paid extra for the hours, I sincerely hope that you'll get some kind of bonus afterwards. You deserve it!

Keep up the good work, and be safe!

My family and I are fine here in Cut N Shoot.

My house is fine even though I was outside for 4 hours pumping water from my house to keep from flooding during the hurricane.

No power (I do have a generator with limited gas) gas lines are 2 to 3 hours long, and had to go back to work monday just to sit around for 8 hours.

No water

We are all getting paid extra, for for us salary guys though, it is just regular time after the first 45 hours. The best bonus would be a weekend off so I can assess damage to my home. Can't see much when i leave in the dark and get home in the dark.

scourge, there is not enough rep in the world for you right now. To bad I have to spread it around to give you some more.

And I understand the hours you put in, I'm salaried myself and work for Memorial Hermann hospital system. I put in a 24 hour shift this weekend, and more is coming. Right now I'm one of the lucky ones that got their power back early, so at least for today I am working from home. Although that can change at any moment.

Keep up the good work and letting us know how you are doing.

.....and from a company stand point, we aren't making any money if the meters aren't spinning.

That is not entirely accurate. Reliant carries insurance for these occasions and they will get it back in some sort of storm recovery tax that will be tacked on the bills.

I am not feeling any pain for the company, but I do feel for the employees such as you. When you guys get the job completed, I hope they give bonuses to the people who made it happen.

I know, and I don't feel sorry for them either, but frustrated people are told that to soften the blow about time frame, and most don't question it. We also make our money from gas, and the contractors we are receiving aren't paid by us either.

Gotta go, they are shipping me out tomorrow... not sure where, but it will probably be in the Cypress, Katy, or Fort Bend area.

Still no power, a transformer blew when they turned the power on Monday and half of the neighborhood has power and half does not, they say it will be 2 weeks before they will be repairing transformers, :foottap: but Im officially a lumberjack!

that sounds about right... hopefully sooner as they were saying that we are up to 50% and closing in on 75 - 80% by next week is the goal.

Come out to South Montgomery county past Tomball. No lights means no water. We are dying out here.

I did see some trees cut down and poles replaced on the street that runs into our neighborrhood, but lines still down.

Newest map says 80% restored by cob tomorrow. I sure hope so! :splits:

And I will echo the others comments. I know this is a LOT of work, and I can't tell you how much we appreciate it. A lady brought some homemade cookies to the lineman working near us. Folks, bring these people some food and treats and get them "charged" up for the long haul still ahead!

Atascocita area of Humble - still no power, but cell phone signal is starting to get a little better. Centerpoint says by Monday.

Work is up but using generators.

Have a gas hot water heater and a gas stove and a full tank of propane. Can eat well and take hot showers. Grocery stores and gas stations on generators are open. Ice is available.

Got some roof damage as I have a leak in the kitchen ceiling, but no trees through the house.

I am ready for the power to be restored as I am ready for relatives to be able to go home.

But I know the utility workers are doing the best they can and the power will be on as soon as possible.

Not expected to have power for the next week, but had my first brief access to the net. Have participated as a medical 1st responder. Sad scenes. For those of us that have only lost power, may we count our blessings and share our prayers for those that have lost much more.

'Twas The Night After Ike’ (A little humor dedicated to the "Powerless"

'Twas the night after Ike
When all through the state
Not a gas pump was pumping
Not a store open late

All the plywood was hung
On the windows with care
Knowing that a hurricane
Soon would be there

The children were ready
With flashlights in hand
While bands from the hurricane
Covered over the land

And mamma with her Mag-Lite
And I in my cap
Had just filled the bath tub
For flushing our crap

When out on the lawn
There arose such a clatter
I sprang from the closet
To see what was the matter

The trees on the fence
And the neighbor's roof torn
Gave the fear of us dying
In this terrible storm

With a little wind gust
So lively and quick
I remembered quite clearly
Our walls weren't brick

More rapid than eagles
Her courses they came
And she whistled, and wafted
And surged all the same

Off shingles! Off sidings!
Off rooftops! Off power!
Down trees! Down fences!
Down trailers! Down towers!

In the center of Texas
She continued to maul
Screaming Blow Away!
Blow Away! Blow Away All!

As wind ripped and tossed
The debris through the sky
I peeked out the shutters
At cars floating by

So go to the safe-room
My family did do
With a portable radio
And batteries too

And then, in a twinkling
I heard on the set
The end was not coming
For a few hours yet!

As I calmed down the kids
And was turning around
Through the window it came
With a huge crashing sound

A tree branch it was
All covered in soot
The wind blew it smack-dab
On top of my foot

A bundle of twigs
Now lay in a stack
And my living room looks
Like it was under attack

The wind - how it howled!
The storm - very scary!
Myself and the family
Were all too unwary

The dangers of hurricanes
Are serious, you know
They are taken for granted
As Ike did show

With the winds dying down
And the danger beneath
I noticed my tool shed
Was missing its sheath

So I grabbed my last tarp
And nailed it on down
Then I got in my car
And I headed to town

The traffic was awful
And stores had no ice
My five gallon cooler
Would have to suffice

Generators were scarce
Not one left in town
There were trees on the roads
And power lines down

I looked side to side
No CenterPoint here
This only resulted
In compounded fear

And in the midst of
This peculiar scurge
The question of
Another storm emerged

I sprang to the car
And gave my family a whistle
Then away we all went
Like a Tomahawk missile

You could hear us exclaim
As we drove out of sight
"Fare well to this place,
San Antone seems just right!"

To those who care about what we are doing...

We have had a few deaths so far and numerous injuries, one of which was an injury to one of our tree cutting crew members and a chain saw cut through his thigh to the bone.

Today, Richard Grasshoff had a stroke while getting crews lined up for todays work. He is the Director of Field Operations in Greenspoint. He was still conscious when he was placed on the stretcher, and as they were loading him in the ambulance he raised an arm into the air and shouted, "I'll be back in 2 days!" Sure enough, by 3pm he was calling and barking orders by phone. He is one of the hardest working men you will ever meet. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers if you would.

I teared up today. It was only the 3rd time I had done so in the last 8 years i have been with my wife. The first time was when my cat had leukimia and I held his paw and scratched his ears as they put him down to ease his suffering. The second, was when my daughter got sick at 3 months and was in pain, and there wasn't anything i could do to make her feel better.

But these tears were of relief. As I was driving out to yet another job site and hadn't eaten in 7 hours, I saw a convoy of trucks coming up behind me pretty fast. It was a contract crew. Typically, we just wave at each other, but this time as I waved, the driver of the lead truck stuck his head out the window, pointed foward and yelled, "Don't worry boys, we're gonna kick some ass!" I threw my fist in the air in response, and as each of the other trucks passed, they all honked and threw their fists up as well. It was their enthusiam that got me. Sure, they are really doing it for the money, but to look excited to be there and help was what really got to me, especially after everything we are going through.

I know everyone is tired of being without lights. I, too, am without lights. But we are working ourselved to death to get things up as soon as humanly possible. No matter how irritating it may be for you, try and go without lights and still put in the hours we do. 5 minutes a night with my daughter, and that's if she's awake, isn't enough.

Enough of that now, just wanted to get this out.

Sorry to everyone who wants power yesterday, I do too.

*edit* good thing I was wearing my sunglasses, and my partner was talking to his wife on his cell phone, or I would've never heard the end of it had he seen me.

Preston, be careful out there. A postman died yesterday in River Oaks. Apparently he had grabbed a chain link fence that had a low hanging power line touching it that was hot. At least, that's what i've heard about how(rumor?) it happened. Haven't seen the report yet, but it was sent out to us through our pager that it happened while grabbing the fence.

a shout out to all the insurance adjusters that came in from other states. My Farmers insurance adjuster is in from Missouri and has had to sleep in his truck the last few days since he hasn't been able to find a motel room. He is a young guy and said he would most likely be here for a year even though he has a wife and kids back home. I called my insurance on Monday and the adjuster was here exactly when he said he would be on Thursday...a big thanks to the guys who came down to assist us.

hey scourge, since your in the know somewhat, I'm out in the Humble atascocita area & i was wondering if you knew specifically what's the major issue out here b/c i've been driving around our zip code & the power lines & whatnot look ok, but we're still in the dark out here. Yesterday our lights flickered on for about 2.5 hours & then went back off again. I haven't seen a centerpoint truck out here in my neighborhood since that day. Did they just run into some unforeseen problems?

By the way, i really appreciate how hard you guys are working even though i haven't seen the fruits of that labor out my way yet, you guys should get a substantial raise once this ordeal is done.

Hello everyone,

Finally at a location where I can receive a strong enough signal to get my Blackberry online, so thought I would give an update here...

We are one of the many groups still without power, and to be honest, it isn't all that bad to me... Saves me $$$ on my next light bill :-). The only damage I have to my house is a few shingles missing and part of my fence went down, but that seems to be the most of it.

Business has almost completely come to a stop, which is not a good thing for us, but somehow we will get thru and moving again.

My area of town is on the list of possibly having power today, so I am patiently waiting my turn on the grid...

I do have to send out a personal thank you to all the volunteers, emergency crews, and everyone else who are working their butts off to try and help others in this devistation. Your hard work and assistance has not gone unnoticed and unappreciated. I have made a point to try and stop to thank everyone I see just to say thank you and God bless!

Hurricane Alicia was MUCH worse than this. Besides I went through *MCT so a week sleeping in the dark and cuddling an assault weapon were a trip down memory lane to me. The only differences?

Taking a cold shower wasn't the highlight of the week but in the grand scheme of things there are people who live this way all the time. We only had to do it briefly. We're fortunate.

lol! My rep # is "69"! The small busty one in my avitar should get a kick out of that.

From a time standpoint as far as outages, that is true so far. power was out during Alicia in many areas for 17 days. This has only been 7 days and 1 million customers already have power. The destruction of Galveston will probably make this one worse by that measure. But as far as damage goes, this one is far greater. Ike was high Cat2 winds with Cat4 storm surge. Houston has never seen such devastation. When it hit Huntsville it was still a Cat1. Ike had the strength to run up passed New York. Alicia has nothing on Ike.

and Louisiana still isn't completely up from Gustav. Feel sorry for them.

Hurricane Alicia was MUCH worse than this. Besides I went through *MCT so a week sleeping in the dark and cuddling an assault weapon were a trip down memory lane to me. The only differences?

I've lived through both and Alicia was nothing like this. Ike was FAAAAR worse. No question about it!

The busty one is HOT. So your rep is passing 69...sorry dude!!!!

My neighbors are all getting power. But not me!!!! :hairpull:

Yeah, but you can spend all the time you want at your neighbors house.

I won the electricity lottery last night. Order has now been restored. I continue to root for the ones that don't have power.

I'm in New Caney (Entergy) and my neighborhood was a mess. I did not attempt to leave the house until Monday due to the heavy rainwater in the streets. When I took the initial tour and saw the tangled mess of downed trees on power lines, my first guess was 2-3 weeks for repair. The next day, the streets were crawling with power guys, neighbors chainsawing trees and tree crews cutting up trees. Danged if the power didn't come back on by midnight Thursday night. The phone lines (and DSL) came on shortly thereafter. So, 6-7 days without power and telephone.... I think I was *very* lucky.... Water quality and pressure were good the whole time... I have a little generator for TV/lights/fan/electric ice chest so not too much hardship - saw a pretty good MNF game....

My parents are in Clear Lake (77062) and had power by Tuesday....

I for one would like to thank all the electric guys and the asplound tree guys for thier hard work in returning the Houston Infastructure of electricity to its peak performance. I would like all to take into consideration that while they are working to get our power on they are also rebuilding the whole system of the gulf region. Have some compassion for these guys as they are working as hard as they can. Quit asking for a favor and thank them for the work they are doing.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you Scourge, and all of your peers who have spent long hours to help us.

Just got back online here in our block in Bay Knoll of 77062 in Clear Lake. If I ever had any doubts about how important power is in our lives, I never will again. And did I miss my internet & TV !
Landscaping got torn a new one, but structurealy our house is in good shape (less some guttering and fenses, that's about it).
And kudos to our real first-responders - HEB, Wal-Mart, Sams, Krogers. I for one don't need no stinkin FEMA and suggest this kind of storm recovery work be permanently contracted out to the private sector.

Yah, a co-worker of mine lives off of 1314 and was told it would be between Sept. 26- Oct. 1. Man was he excited to see the lights on Thurday night.

And thanks, Joe. Getting your power back on asap is the least i can do for all the tailgating and breakfasts and dinners we used to attend together. :tiphat:

I now have mold in my daughters ceiling from a hole in my roof. Insurance won't cover it, and from what i understand, I don't qualify for FEMA due to actually having insurance and being middle class. From what my wife tells me, it isn't a very big hole, but i wouldn't know 'cause I am never home during daylight. Luckily, my company brought a crew over to my house and secured a large tarp across the side of my house to prevent further leaking so I wouldn't miss any time here. Now I just gotta wait until I'm done and figure out how much damage is going to be there when I have some time off. Sounds very costly.

And I agree, kudos to the supermarkets that opened up as quickly as they did. Once the 1st few days passed, my wife was able to get gas reasonably easy and buy more supplies for the wait.

Power is ON!!!!

7 days, 18 hours, 42 minutes in the dark.

Major props to Aspen Tree Service (The Big Hungry) from Michigan, and to FPL (Florida Power & Light Co.) out of Jupiter, Florida, for getting us back on line.

Yeah, FEMA is not for us Houstonians apparently. I was turned down by them too. Funny how almost all the residents of New Orleans were given freaking debit cards with no questions asked and no one I know is approved for any help from FEMA. I sustained quite a bit of damage myself and am still without power and I qualify for exactly jack crap.

We're Ok. Lost my LNB on the satellite, but other than that, gravy. Saw an old school chum on 13. His house in Lakewood subdivisoin in Baytown looks like they usually do after they get flooded. Been there. Done that.
Move west and North young man.
If you were on the east side of the storm, you got bombed. Chambers county and Baytown are a mess. They may rebuild The west end of Galveston. Bolivar looks like its gone. Even if you could rebuild there, why would you ? At some point someone is going to have to say enough is enough and Kelo the properties near the water. We were lucky with this storm. If the dry air from the typhoon that hit Baja California had not been pushed off the Texas coast and the eye wall of Ike would have reformed, it would of wiped everything from downtown to Chambers county off the face of the earth. Big difference in Rita @ 889 millibars of pressure and this one at 953 mb.

LOL She'd be happy to hear you say that. She's in the middle of one of those "I'm fat...you're just saying I'm not because you care about me" phases.

Don't leave out the folks at Coca-Cola...

My counterparts in Houston absolutely busted butt getting product onto the shelves. I was on multiple conference calls last week getting thousands of cases of bottled water out of our facility to the Houston area. There were Coke employees there the DAY OF the storm still stocking shelves with water.

Hats off to the whole Houston community for stepping up. Makes me proud.
