Apparent Blockbuster Deal in the Making...

I read this on another board so I thought Id share....not sure what forum it belongs in...

JETS AND CHARGERS TO ANNOUNCE BLOCKBUSTER
DE-Abraham To San Diego - QB-Rivers To New York

The DinoCosta Show has learned through an exclusive source that the NY Jets & San Diego Chargers are set to make a Blockbuster trade.

The Chargers will send quarterback Philip Rivers, the 4th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, to the Jets, in return for pass rushing defensive end John Abraham. Rivers has been stuck behind Chargers quarterback Drew Brees the last two seasons, and will be re-uniting with former Chargers asst. Brian Schottenheimer who was recently named the Jets offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer is planning to install an offensive system that is similar in design to the Chargers current system - a system that Rivers is comfortable in and familiar with. Abraham has been miffed that the Jets haven't given him a new contract after proving that he could play an entire 16 game schedule as he did last year. The Chargers will slide Abraham nicely into their 3-4 defense that will also feature Shawne Merriman, providing San Diego with a terrific twosome that will give the rest of the AFC West fits. This trade makes sense for both teams and makes the Chargers "quiet" signing of quarterback A.J. Feeley last season something that was apparently done with the long term in mind. A big question for the Jets is what will they do with current quarterback Chad Pennington...should he be successful in returning from major shoulder surgery for a second time.

However, caveat emptor-the same source jan. 2nd

The Dino Costa Show has learned through an anonymous source that current Dallas Coach Bill Parcells may be interested in returning to New York with the Jets if Herman Edwards takes the head coaching position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to the source, Parcells would only be interested in the Jets general manager position and would hire the next Jets coach to replace Edwards. This has been a trying year for Parcells both with his football team and on a personal front with the death of his brother earlier in the year. Parcells could be lured back to New York if given fill control of football operations by Jets owner Woody Johnson. Either way Parcells is not expected to return to Dallas next season. Edwards is increasingly coming under media scrutiny in New York for the first time in his tenure as Jets coach. The feeling is that Edwards may have coached his last game with the Jets today - and that Parcells would be more than interested in a second Jets act.

I dont see how this trade would happen with the uncertainty of both Drew Brees and Chad Pennington. How severe was Brees' injury? Is he going to be ready for opening day? I was under the impression that Pennigton's injury was not the same as before and he would be ready to go. Watching the the last four years of the 3-4, I would have to have questions on how Abraham (a DE) would fit into that system. Would he be one of the three down lineman? Does he play OLB? In either case I dont see how he would be effective.

If I was Abraham I would demand a trade to the Texans. If the Jets really want a QB we always have the NFL Europe runner up Ragone. Heck I would even package BJ Symons in that deal.

Guess you were just funning about your trade as Symons was pick up by another team after being cut by Texans. How about this? We trade 1st pick to Jets for 4th pick, their 2nd round, 2007 1st round and Abraham? I think Jets would salivate @ getting Bush.

There is a problem with that: Abraham is not under contract with the Jets. He was slapped with the franchise tag, so he holds a grudge with the Jets.

Chad Pennington tore his rotator cuff in the same place twice in two years. His arm was already weak and is now about as strong as a kicker's. Pennington sounds like a rich polo guy, not a football player. But that's beyond the point.

I had heard this rumor too, especially on the Jets boards. I don't know if I believe it, the Jets could be shopping Abraham since they might not be able to resign him, but bringing in another big-contract QB might not be the best solution for their cap situation either. Merriman and Abraham together as OLBs in a 3-4 would be a nasty combo though.

Any team interested in signing Abraham will have a long term deal agreed to with Abraham before consumating any trade. Abraham will also have to pass a physical to conclude any agreement.

Phillip Rivers for #4 pick and Abraham is not an equitable deal for the Jets. IMO, Rivers for Abraham , straight-up is not fair for Jets. Trading with Texans would be better for Jets because I feel either Leinart or VY is better than Rivers. I believe teams can tag their FA soon. March 3 is date teams can pursue other FA besides their own.

You misread the quote. It is Rivers for Abraham straight up. They mentioned that Rivers was the 4th overall pick in 2004, so that probably confused the issue.

i would rather abraham come to the texans
I dunno....he's 28 when the season starts, certainly not old but a younger
player would be more desireable. But on the other hand he is a proven edge rusher, and that's a player that we've really failed to find and secure for our defense.

I also heard that the Jets were looking to fall back in the draft because they don't want to put out alot much money on a 4th over all pick.
