Finding talented players in the National Football League is only half of the battle. Once you find those players, they have to fit your system.
Good athletes and football players don't grow on trees. It is the hope that every player an organization acquires will fit its system, but this is not possible. Mistakes might be made in scouting, or a certain player might not develop into what you thought he was going to be.
Once the decision has been made, though, sometimes there is no turning back. In the case of LaVar Arrington, the Redskins would take a huge cap hit should they opt to release him. In the case of Phillip Buchanon, the Texans gave up two first-day picks in a trade with the Raiders. I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to tell owner Bob McNair his team gave away two first-day picks for a player who isn't even contributing.
There are times when you have to bite the bullet. Instead of benching a talented player, find a role for him and see whether you can make the best of a bad situation.
Arrington, Buchanon and Marshall Faulk are talented players who are being underutilized by their current coaching staffs. Let's take a look at all three situations and see whether there is something these organizations could be doing to get more out of these players.
