Anyone opposed of Meriweather? Big post inside

I was thinking...why not go with revis, who fills an obvious need at CB, and wait and see if meriweather is there in the 2nd? If not, no big deal, we just pick the next guy on our list. If so, great. Kill 2 big birds in the same draft so we can save money to address other needs in FA. Maybe sign an OL or SLB.

1-CB Darrelle Revis (Pitt)
2-FS Brandon Meriweather (Miami)
3-DT Kareem Brown (Miami)
4-BPA @ OL

FA-Sign SLB Adalius Thomas
Hope Spencer is healthy

Now that would be a killer defense.
CB-Dunta and Revis
S-Meriweather and Earl
LB-Greenwood/Ryans/Thomas
DL-Travis Johnson and Kareem Brown
DE-Weaver and Mario with Peek/Babin as subs

Granted, we didn't do anything to upgrade our offense, but maybe a year of experience for our OL will do some good and a healthy Spencer could really help. I think Taylor/Dane at RB should be fine. Also hope Carr can improve after a year under Kubiak. A healthy Mathis could also do wonders.

Also, we'd be better off waiting til 08 for a QB if we decide to get rid of Carr. Brohm and Russell may stay in school, and Henne and Brennan are going to be there as well.

The Bengals need a safety and character isn't a concern to them. Simple, they get Meriwether in the second or third round.

I think we should wait until 2018 to draft a QB on the first day. Don't want to waste the pick on a backup for Quinton Porter.

Wasn't Merriweather involved in the shootout at the Miami Corral? I am not sure they will bring that character to Houston.

he was involved in a shooting. He returned fire at someone who was shooting at his teammate. the gun was legally registered.

Free safety is not one of the top three needs to Texans need to solve in the draft. The top three are offensive left tackle, running back, and cornerback. The Texans need to take the best player available at one of these three positions.

well, if spencer returns healthy, i think we can scratch off LT. also, the OT crop is weak this year. makes no sense to waste a pick just to fill a need. we also know kubiak wont take a RB early, and taylor has looked good. so scratch that off. we could really build our secondary with revis and meriweather.

I don't see us using all three 1st day picks on defense. While that would really solidify our D I think our offense warrants a couple high picks in there too, plus I'd rather see us get a big DE like Adam Carriker and move Weaver inside to DT rather than leaving Weaver outside and drafting a DT.

what games have you been watching? Safety is a HUUUUGE need for this team.

Running back is not a need at all for this team. Dayne and Taylor with Lundy as a backup we'll do us just fine.

I agree that FS is a huge need, but I disagree on Dayne/Taylor/Lundy being sufficient for our offense. That trio will grind out a lot of tough yards and put up respectable box scores but our running game will be pretty mundane and lacking any big plays which will continue to hinder our passing offense unless we upgrade at RB too. I think our biggest needs are:
CB
FS
RB
interior OL
SLB
DE
depth

Free Safety is a big enough need that Landry/Nelson will be picked #8 overall.

Cornerback is a big enough need that Revis/Cason/Hall will be picked #8.

Offensive line is beg enough need that Joe Thomas and only Joe Thomas will be picked #8 if available.

Running back is not necessarily that big of need put Peterson/Lynch may be picked #8.

Quarterback is not that big of need to draft at #8 but Quinn/Russell may be thought about.

Wide Receiver is not a need at #8 but Calvin Johnson would be tempting.

Defensive Tackle is not necessarily a need at #8 but Alan Branch could easily be selected if available.

Defensive End is not really a need at #8 but Gaines Adams could be good with Mario. (most unlikely imo)

Linebacker is not necessarily a need at #8. Patrick Willis would team with Demeco great but only in a trade down.

Am I missing anything else?

Back to the main question on Meriweather...!!

Yes and no. With his on field and off field incidents I wouldn't want him on our team. I would like landry/nelson in first, but Meriweather would be a great pick in the 2nd round as a football player.

Much like my thought on Lendale White last year. He has 1st round potential but dropped to the 2nd. We could of picked him up but didn't. He has some character issues as well. (although his issues are not near the calibre as Meriweathers and he didn't drop for those reasons alone.)

I don't see the texans picking Meriweather because of our character. I would be okay with him on the team if and only if he behaved himself. The greatest indication of what will happen in the future is what has happened in the past. and I don't like his past...

here's how i see it. of course, i wouldnt touch meriweather in the 1st. and about his character issues, he did shoot at someone, but only after his friend was shot at first. anybody would have done the same. with all the violence around the miami campus, i wouldnt be surprised that more than half the team owned weapons. his gun was legally registered, and i dont think gangsters take the time out to register their weapons. for his part in the big brawl, maybe he just got caught up in the moment. yea, it was pretty stupid of him to stomp on a player, but at least he didnt swing his helmet around like that other guy. we could actually use some anger on the field...we play defense like girls sometimes. if we really badger him with questions during the interviews and he checks out fine, why not take him? talentwise, he's right up there with landry and the others. we did take TJ after he was accused of sexual assault, even though the charges were later dropped or whatever. after taking andre and then winston last year, im sure we have a pretty good scouting report on him from watching the miami games.

Not bad points... I'd still rather not be friends with someone who gets shot at and I have to fire back because he's my friend. I'd still rather not carry a gun around (even though it's registered).

I am glad I don't have to coach at Miami with all that #$%*. I'm glad I'm not Miami's recuiter. "You're the best running back prospect in the nation. You need to come to The U and play for us. Heck, we'll even issue you your own Glock and give you ammo once a week!!"

Could be a product of his invironment. miami, fl. I sure am glad Andre and Eric didn't get mixed in with those thugs but some people do.

i see your points, but its not like it will affect his play on the field or hold him out from any games unless he gets into a firefight with some other thugs or something.

That's like saying you would rather not ride with people who can wreck their car. People get shot at...not always their fault.

LOL, not quite the same. I see if you're saying it's some completely random shooting at like a movie theatre and nobody knows the other people.

People get shot at...a lot of the times they have done something to warrant getting shot at or at least put themselves in that position.

Eric was only brought out of the caves on game-days.
Yes, but he sometimes got cranky. We let him sleep under the field and he comes out on his own terms.

It's hard to track down any information about it on the internet. I'm trying to give my unbiased opinion but it's hard because I'd always rather choose the boy scout. I did find a few articles about it though, just trying to get some clear information of what all happend.

Is the shooting you're talking about at his house? Apparently some guy went there and shot his roomate/teammate. I'm also assuming friend. Meriweather returned fire. (when I first read what you wrote the picture in my head was that they were driving around and someone shot his friend. then he pulled out a gun and shot back...completely different scenario)

Also found this...might be the same incident. "Consecutive seasons that more closely resembled “Cops” than “College GameDay” can do that to a program. This season began and ended in gunfire, from a robbery attempt at safety Brandon Merriweather’s house..."

http://www.collegiatetimes.com/news/4/ARTICLE/8117/2006-12-01.html

Well at least he had his gun registered and had a concealed hang gun liscense!

Personally, I think it's too risky to allow him out on his own terms. I'm just thinking about my safty here.
As you can see, the only people who dare to get close stay behind a white picket fence. Winston's weaknesses are brontosauruses and white picket fences.

Ahh...that explains the white picket fences at the Texan's practice facilities. They are just trying to protect us.

People get shot at...a lot of the times they have done something to warrant getting shot at or at least put themselves in that position.

Some people get shot at for using one curse word at someone...some people get shot at for looking at people wrong. It is rarely justified if that is what you mean.

Also I rarely believe fully what I read...alot of the time they will try and break the scenario down in an article (what happened) but I can't bring myself to believe it because how do you know any of it is true...how does the writer know? How do the cops even know that the remaining people left to explain what happened aren't lying or just completely making things up?

It's his actions in the fight that turn me away from him. The type of players we seem to be looking for would be breaking it up...not stomping on someones head. As for the gun thing...I cannot comment because I do not know enough about it...nor does anyone really.

Yes I know people get shot at for a number of reasons. I was quick to say he must have been doing something bad. You were quick to say he didn't do anything it was completely unjustified.

I had no idea of the situation of Meriweather being involved in the shooting. In my head i figured he was out on the town. after reading several different articles, they were all saying the same thing that he was at his house. Sure maybe its a conspiracy and none of its true. or it's like a leak to espn and they report 'breaking news' that is false. I was just trying to get an idea of what happend...sorry for doing that....why are we even talking about this if we have no idea of anything going on? If you were going to hire somebody wouldn't you want to know why they were involved in some of the activities that have made the news!? Yea i didn't know anything about the gun thing thats why i was trying to learn more about it...and if anybody else knew more about it.was hoping they would comment. so people like us that don't know about it can learn...but then again they could be lying as well.

I rarely believe everything the newsreporter says or the writer writes. but most of the time it stems from solid evidence or facts or a story who knows. some of it is false some is true. i'll probably never know.

I find it funny you're so quick to just blow everything off...he doesnt have to be doing anything bad to be shot at.....don't believe everything you read. they might be lying..how do you know its all tru.

This is ridiculous even talking about this.

At least the fight was all caught on camera so we can see in plain sight what he did. One problem with sports is when athletes do try to stop things sometimes they get in trouble as well. I remember years ago I think it was vernon maxwell (maybe someone else..don't quote me on that name) went into the stands because he was angry at a fan. another rocket went after him to break it up and bring him back. he got fined for going into the stands.

One thing I loved seeing was during the Giants game this season. I think it was the play where mario got flagged for roughing eli out of bounds which was a bogus call. mario got furious and was yelling but Demeco was right there yelling at mario pushing him back. I liked to see mario get some of that fire and that leadership of demeco...probably my favorite part of this season except for beating the colts and mario doing the jump shot in NY.

i just dont see what the big problem is with the whole fight situation. its not like he stomps on people during games everyday. maybe he is a bit wound up too tight, but we sure could use some fire on defense.

as far as the gun situation, he's not some criminal, he shot in self defense from what all the sources report. if a white guy did so, would it be that big of a deal?

are there some red flags, yes. but they shouldnt eliminate him from out draft board.

he has no criminal record that im aware of. hes not some druggy...or he hasnt been caught with anything at least. he doesnt mouth off on his teammates...i think the red flags should be a concern, but they can easily be addressed in interviews.

Agreed, that's why I was trying to read up on the whole gun incident so i don't unfairly accuse him of anything..but apparently i can't trust anybody about this.

The thing I don't like about the fight incident is that whether it happens everygame or once, he still stomped on that dude! it shows if things get out of control again he might easily do it again. or it may key another player to get mad and do the same thing (which is probably why that fight got so out of hand).

If kubiak and mcnair like him and think he has gotten a bad rep, but should be fine here in houston. then fine i wont argue. unless he does something on or off the field then i will be mad. i'd be mad if winston went and did something like that...and he's white!

Landry and Nelson can hit just as hard if not harder, I like them as FS prospects more than Meriweather (strictly from FS standpoint). I don't want us to pick meriweather at #8. if we pass landry/nelson up, meriweather could be gone in 2nd. if he happens to be there still. maybe they pick him. i don't even know what im saying anymore. I do think we'll do another good job in the draft in...wow..this year.

Also, we'd be better off waiting til 08 for a QB if we decide to get rid of Carr. Brohm and Russell may stay in school, and Henne and Brennan are going to be there as well.

This is what I'm thinking also. But if they do take the QB prospect with the one...I'm thinking that that will free them up for a first round OLT prospect in '08. Bit tardy. But eventually some on off of Kirby is going to get it. Tallent in the o-line does matter. No matter who the QB is.

I find it funny you're so quick to just blow everything off...he doesnt have to be doing anything bad to be shot at.....don't believe everything you read. they might be lying..how do you know its all tru.

It's not so much blowing it off but not really having an opinion on the situation because whatever actually happen is so unknown that I can't.

Im probably going to go with Nelson/Landry then Merriweather. Then again I saw ESPN do a short segment on him and how he reads and covers the slot Receiver. He did ok, they showed him make a mistake but they were touting him (which scares me).

And to be fair to Landry and Nelson I dont watch ESPN that much so if they did something on Nelson and Landry I missed it.

I have no desire to have a guy like Meriweather. I think you are getting the baggage of Taylor with a lot less talent. Plus I do not want to have to buy him a bullet proof vest. He likes his gun and that is going to hurt him in the draft.
