Anyone else tired of announcers?

im kinda tired of hearing these weak catch phrases that every single announcer tries to have. rock and roll baby. its up its long its gone .... or whatever. evrybody wants to be the next big thing, how bout the producers tell these guys people arent watching to hear them and to just call the game.what do u guys think? oh and i didnt watch the game on sat so i dont know what the bula bula stuff is about.

This is something I've been wanting to see for a long, long time. The commentators can shut up for all I care and on the radio, I just want the facts. The best football games I ever watched were many years ago when NBC did an experiment with nobody in the booth. They just showed the game and had the graphic on the screen telling you what down it was and how many yards to go.

It was so much better than every other broadcast I've ever seen that it makes me sad to think that it's probably never going to happen again.

I don't wanna come off as an *******, but announcers don't bother me and last I checked every TV I have ever owned or watched has a mute button, if you don't like what you hear, you should really consider using it.

The Sportscenter catch phrases irritate me more. It's almost like a prerequisite that every person on the show have a catch phrase to utter while showing highlights. Some of them are good, but most of them stink. Okay I'll admit I'm a bit partial to the "Say Ello To My Lil Friend" one, but thats just cause I'm a Scarface fan.

I will admit that the announcers do talk too much. I don't need to know what's coming up on 60 minutes after the game. I don't need to hear you argue back and forth about whether or not it was enough for the first down. I have eyes.

Problem with the mute button is you miss the sounds of the game. The fans cheering/booing, the players crashing together.

The catch phrases usually don't bother me unless they're a little too weird or different, or they're being used too much. I'm guessing that the tv producers are putting pressure on the announcers to be more interesting and appeal to younger people, that's why they go overboard.

I guess you do make a good argument, you should then have an option on your remote control to turn off the commentators (like on Madden), as a matter of fact I think I'll work on that invention, dont any of you try and take my idea either. :ok:

Madden there is an irritation waiting to happen. He is the second reason i wont watch Monday Night Football. The other is seeing the same teams 3 times a year and never seeing the Texans on it...

I dont mind commentators in the booth calling the game, but what I do hate is all the filler. They have to be talking all the time. if there is 5 seconds between talking, someone gets in trouble. They cant just stop talking while nothing is going on, on the field. Then the special interest pieces just drive me crazy. Going to the sideline to talk to someone I dont care about, or cutting to a clip about whatever.

I would love a commentator option, on/off.

This will be the next phase of technology, digital TV.

I really wanted to see the highlight clips and some of the Hall of Fame game, but they just wouldn't shut up. Besides the game being extremely boring, they sure didn't help by interviewing people such as Dan Marino's son.

That's what I have long thought is a good idea. They have that SAP button on most remotes where you can change some shows to hear them in English, and Spanish. I've always thought it would be nice if they added that to the NFL. Maybe have 2 broadcast crews so you can choose. I think it would be nice if they had 1 crew that was your normal combo, and 1 crew that was just a group of local celebrities watching the game. Wouldn't mind watchin a Texans game while Charles Barkley, Calvin Murphy, and George Foreman were having a conversation. I'm sure you could get Eminem on in Detroit, that would be interesting...

hah.. selectable commentators..that would be great.

If they would give me the option of turning off the commentators.. that would be great.

it would be even better if they would give you the option to turn it to "realism mode" where the stadium sounds are amplified a bit..and you can just listen to the guy speaking over the loud speaker.

That would be enough for me. Turn the lights off and turn on the surround sound.

I remember watching a Rockets game one time last season when the mikes were accidentally turned off for a few minutes, so all that was on was the sounds of the game. I thought it was interesting to hear what the players and coaches said. Even though I usually like listening to the guys who announce the Rockets games, I was a little disappointed when they came back on.

It doesn't seem to fit basketball, just hearing the players and coaches with a stadium guy saying something every few minutes, and I'm not sure I could get used to that if they didn't have any tv announcers for a whole game. But for football, it's a different situation and I think the NFL people should at least experiment with a "realism mode" to see how fans react.

the thing that gets me about the commentators and drives me crazy is when they say the obvious. like, " they're gonna need to get alot more pass rush if they hope to win the game" or " Carr's gonna need more time to throw the ball if they're gonna get anywhere". and i'm sitting there saying "No **** Sherlock".

does this thread have anything to do with the fact that the cfl announcers went on strike and it ends up the the ratings went up 10%?

Yeah right because what I want to watch is an NFL game without any sounds of a crowd, ambient noise, or the sound of the really hard hits.

That's not exactly what I call a good solution AndreJ. I said I don't like listening to the announcers, I never said I didn't like hearing the sounds of the game.

Who knows, as TV gets more and more "feature rich" maybe someday they'll have a selective mute button allowing you to turn off the talking heads if you don't like the team they have in the booth that week.

What I wish I could turn off is all of the distracting graphic animations and sound effects. Put the score in the upper corner small enough not to get in the way, big enough that I can read it and leave me the hell alone. Remember when the broadcasts didn't look like a video game with all of the crap on the screen?

No no! Madden is great. Madden is an institution. I wait with baited breath to hear what he would say next. My friends and I in college made a drinking game out of Maddenisms. I remember one time it was 3rd and 15, and Madden said, "Looks like they are gonna go for a pass for the first down!" If THAT is not briliiance, I dont know what is!

Yeah, I definately am tired of announcers, I was watching the Falcons/Jaguars game and Byron Leftwich got hurt for a play and he said, "for this, Hallmark doesn't have a card", I didn't even get the joke so that made it even worse..

There are several things that bug me about announcers and I have remarked on them before, but here it goes again.

1. "There's no love loss between these two teams." What the hell does that mean?

2. Using a single player to describe several players. ie. "You have your Brett Favres, your Tom Bradys and your Peyton Mannings."

3. The tired, overused phrase "Class Act" ie. "Coach Dandy is a class act." This term is only used in sports. No one ever says a doctor is a class act.

Well I know the answer to number 1, that means the two teams have a rivalry, for example the Texans and the Titans.. which I kinda consider a rivalry.

I have to agree with this. As much as I love computers and graphics, I don't watch football to see them.

Now, if we could just do away with commercials. I know, Tivo.

As far as the announcers go, I'm only really bothered by Madden with his over-state-the-obvious :brickwall comments and chicken-scratch-all-over-the-blackboard and Calvin Murphy (I know he's gone) with his rah-rah, basic skills, basic skills comments and his rediculous cookie commentary. Most of the announcers I'm OK with. Oh, I forgot about that comedian with all the Greek God crapola. Who comes up with these people, lol? But, to be honest, I would miss announcers if we didn't have them. I like hearing comments like, "They been trying' to pick on the rookie (Dunta) all day and he's just made them pay for it Big Time!!" I know it's unnecesarry, but I'd miss it.

What gets me is the competely useless stats they sometimes come up with to justify some happening on the field:

Announcer 1: "Looks like "BACK A" is coming out, "BACK B" going in."

Announcer 2: You know, "BACK B" does hold the highest YPC percentage in the first half of night games played in stadiums built at sea level."

Anybody remember Bill Walton taking shots at Hakeem during our championship runs? That drove me crazy. Then i hear him saying great things about him lately, WTF.
