Anybody know why crowning Obrien as king is a good idea?

I don't get it. Obrien was officially made the general manager, coach, offensive coordinator, play caller, contract specialist, draft appraiser, etc., etc., etc. and given more power than any coach on any NFL club in existence. It appears completely contrary to the supposed goal of an NFL team that is attempting to win a Super Bowl. We are a laughingstock to the rest of the country. Does anybody have a valid reason why this a good idea?

Somebody has to be the GM while they wait for Caserio to get out of his contract. I imagine BOB will keep the GM role after Caserio gets here, but Caserio will have a title and essentially be running the team. Or at least that's what I hope is going on.

Heil OBrien! Salute!

Better be careful, wont be long before Texan fans start coming up missing for talking mean things about the franchise. Better get back into the "Deshaun Sucks, and OBrien is BETTER" camp fast!
No lie. I was sitting here thinking abou

A) We are not the laughing stock of the country. There are many teams doing much, much worse things than us.
B) BOB as GM could be a good thing. With the possibility of hiring a new HC now, we may have some hope.

Honestly I cant complain about OB the GM - he's done fairly well in talent acquisition
The talent is one thing. What it costs you to get it is another. You can like acquiring Duke Johnson all you want, and I do FWIW, but he’s a backup RB. You gave up a 3rd round pick for a backup RB. It’s like he’s that fantasy football guy who's always firing off lopsided trade proposals.

His credit card spending will end up costing even more when those bills come due starting this April.

Are you suggesting that he steps down from HC to focus solely on GM and hires a HC? I do not see that happening at all.

I believe his hiring as GM is a preemptive move showing their intentions to hire a new HC. I’m sure there’s a mutual understanding.

All Cal see is divisional titles and back to back 10+ wins. He’s might be clueless or blinded to what’s actually happening.
Example1: Consistently getting embarrassed not only in the playoffs but throughout the regular season.
Example 2: Lethargic starts to these games.
Example 3: This team doesn’t play disciplined football. Top 3 penalized team in the NFL.
Example 4: Whenever a key component of this offense goes down (mainly Fuller) the entire unit goes to crap.
Example 5: Obrien is still making the same of mistakes he was making in year one.
Example 6: Not utilizing his skilled players correctly. There’s no consistency in his offensive game playing.
Example 7: Failure to make in game adjustments.

Clearly those things doesn’t matter to Cal.

Like I said, I don't see that at all. He won't even relinquish OC duties, what makes you think he would ever relinquish HC?
Not relinquish. I think when they hired him as GM it was an understanding. Not his choice. I could be wrong.

"I was encouraged by the progress that our team made on the field this year which was due in part to our new structure, operating approach and the leaders within our football operations group. I am proud that we provided our fans with many thrilling victories at home, including a playoff win, and we delivered another double-digit win season. Our fans deserve that, but now it is time for the organization to get back to work toward our pursuit of a world championship for the city of Houston."

Obrien must also be the speechwriter for the Texans. He's a man of many talents.

He should have been fired. Being fleeced by both Miami and Seattle in the same season and giving a 3rd for a barely used Duke Johnson was not a good endorsement of his GM abilities.

I think Cal was too busy counting the money to really care what was going on. OB will want all access to the team like Bilicheck does.

Tony Dungy vs. Bill O'Brien

In six seasons with Tampa Bay, Tony Dungy posted a 54-42 regular season record, and 2-4 playoff record (in 4 playoff appearances).

In six seasons with Houston, Bill O'Brien has posted a 52-44 regular season record, and a 2-4 playoff record (in 4 playoff appearances).

Amazingly close records!

Now, Dungy is a good coach, HoF inducted in 2016, but he had to go to another team to win a Super Bowl.

O'Brien might arguably be a good head coach (i.e. results-driven business), but he's reached his ceiling with the Texans.

A bold owner would recognize this and find a new HC that could take the existing talent over the hump and at least to a conference championship game.

Unfortunately, Cal is not a bold man in any sort of way, and certainly not a bold owner. He's status quo. And I'm not even sure he could identify a good HC.

Malcolm Glazer is a self-made man. Cal is. . .the son of a self-made man. :truck:

Well at least you have downgraded to laughing stock of the NFL. Originally you said laughing stock of the country. Lol
The tiny population outside of Houston that is paying attention to the Texans this week, they’re not laughing. Well, maybe some of them are. But most of them are asking the question “why?”. And I guarantee you none of them are thinking there’s some kind of arrangement between O’Brien and ownership that he will go out and hire a new head coach.

if We aren’t the laughing stock of the country we should be. I would say we’ve become the Jason garret cowboys where EVERYONE shakes their head and says how the fk is that guy still the coach? But now he’s not just the coach but literally the king of this franchise. Its embarrassing.

Maybe, MAYBE Cal is a brilliant, brilliant man.

Maybe he thinks the job OB has done, has been such an insult to the fans and slap in the face to the city of Houston.... that he promoted him to GM so he can have the fun of firing him multiple times.

Fire him from HC, then OC and finally, GM.... officially.

I know,I know, not likely but....

Maybe Cal just wants to make a change to the offical logo to.....

:toropalm:

... but the change has to make sense.

The idea that OB as the GM might hire a puppet HC (like he has a puppet OC) is not totally out of the question in the bizarro world of the Texans.

But, if that were to happen (which it won't) OB wouldn't let his HC run the team anyway, so it's not like there'd be a whole lot of difference.

With OB, we're screwed. Without him, chances with Cal in charge are 50-50 (or less) that he stumbles into a good GM or HC on his own.

You say this in a league where one team made a first time position coach into the OC and then into the HC all within 8 months, you say this in a league where a team traded a kings ransom to move up one spot to take a QB when both Mahomes and Watson were still on the board, you say this in a league where a team dominates the season and then gets slapped around in their first playoff game by another team that barely made the playoffs and at a Miami reject at QB.

I agree people may look at us and wonder what the Texans are thinking, hell we do that, but we are far from the laughing stock of the country.

Ok “A” laughing stock not “the” laughing stock. Is that better?

Another thought, may have been said, but maybe Cal watched "Major League" and thought he could up and move the team sonewhere else after sabotaging the team into collapsing failure.

Cause it seems odd that the only human being that thinks OB should remain employed is Cal.

Too bad he is the one that can decide OBs employment status.
