Any Market for Mathis?

Kookus

Practice Squad
Ok, say we draft Bush and now have an offensive specialist, RB/WR/KR etc. would there be a market for Jerome "I'm a probowler now and don't have to listen to the coaches" Mathis? Could we get a #1 or #2 draft pick? I would take either for him...

Huh, you dont play Bush on special teams.

And you may be able to get a 2nd for Mathis, I doubt a first, but you're not going to trade him so Bush can play special teams.

Ha, for 30 million guaranteed, he should not only play special teams but be willing to do what ever the coaches tell him... Heck I would give him every touch I could, even if it was shaggin kicks and gatorade!

You don't risk the guy getting 30 million on a punt return where he is most vulnerable to a big hit.

This Mathis has a hard head thing is getting blown out of proportion. He's cheap for what he does, and he's not a disruption to the team. We can give him some time to mature.

Maybe but his value will never be higher then now and why couldn't Bush do PR/KR he did it very well in college and I'm not gonna worry about him getting hurt doing it. He could always just slip in the shower or trip on his own ego and get hurt that way too. Other stars have done that and been very successful, ala Deon Sander, John Taylor to name a few...

A coach can control what happens in the shower, he can control what happens on the field. You have an All-Pro returner in Mathis, you dont get any better than an All-Pro. No need to consider Bush as a returner.

Well at least mathis will have a job, don't see him getting many touches with Bush/Johnson/Moulds/Walter/Putzier/Davis getting the ball. I still would rather have a high #2 for him and pick up a lineman or defensive player that could contribute more...

That was the only time I have ever heard of Mathis being hard to coach. It was just a small comment from what i have heard.

Thank you for your sane comment.

It really kills me when media types start spreading gossip without backing it up. And then the gossip gets a life of its own.

Especially in the fertilizer rich environment of this board.

Only a complete idiot would think of getting rid of Mathis at this point. He's one of the high points of this team.

I love it when people who can't think for themselves resort to name calling... kind of ironic.

Idiot Here. LOL....

I started this up a few weeks ago. I think it would be wise and prudent to move Mathis for what we can get on draft day. I don't want to give him away. I fully appreciate the injury aspect of the deal. But if we DO take the fifty million dollar man, you're waisting one roster spot for a chore that Reggie should be doing.
Also, we're switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Several of the players we have were drafted/signed on the prospect that they would transition from their college /pro positions into the 3-4. My book says it takes two years to do that. So, if you have a guy that has value, wouldn't it be prudent to move the guy at his highest value to grab an extra DE or OLB in the second or third round ? If we could make that transition, going from the 3-4 to the 4-3 , in just one off season, that would be very good. I saw someone argueing the futility of taking A.J. Hawk if we moved down with Green Bay or SF by rattling off the current roster of De's and LBs. I got news for you...a lot of those guys are 3-4 guys and they won't be on the roster come August. Two old guys and a lot of 3-4 guys by my count. Walker sure did get old in a hurry didn't he ?
From my experence, you do the deal and get what you can. JMHO.

Seriously to the doesn't-listen-to-coaches bit. It's amazing how McClain can say one damned thing on his radio show and now everyone is assuming it the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And a 1st or 2nd? No way in hell. 3rd maybe. Mathis is a good KR but he hasn't proven anything else yet, and he didn't even return punts for us.

And I still don't get why people say Reggie will return kicks for us. This isn't Madden, and 55M dollar starting RBs don't return kicks/punts. Just. Does. Not. Happen.

I see no reason to trade an All-Pro (not just Pro Bowl, which has two teams, but All-Pro, meaning he represents special teams for the league), for an unproven rookie. Why throw away a good thing? We have quite possibly the best return man in the league, and you want to trade him away. The offseason does funny things to people.

He is a KR, he isn't even a PR and KR.

You would be lucky to get a third for him, and there are doubts he will ever be a competent receiver.

As for Bush replacing him, if you look at his stats at USC he wasn't that great a PR or KR.

And as for the argument about not putting a 30 million dollar man back there, you don't put a 30 million dollar rookie running back on the roster at all in my book. He is dreaming about getting that I reckon. :pigfly:

We were what, the worst team in the NFL with 1 all-pro player? Then in the off-season people want to dump him as well? As the others have said, Reggie won't play our special teams. In any case I like having as many people as possible who can return kicks, that way if 1 gets hurt (or developes a gameday fumbling habit) the team doesn't skip a beat. I know it's been a long time since the season now, but I can only really remember being excited when other teams were kicking to us.

Besides, even if Bush somehow makes it on the field during kickoffs, who do you kick away from, Bush or Mathis.

Mathis would not yield us a 4th round pick in a trade right now, no one is going to give up much of a pick for a KR specialist that hasn't proven anything as a WR and already has a rep for being a little hard-headed, and I agree with others that you don't spend $55 million on a RB and put him on fulltime special teams duty as well, he should only be a situational PR in key situations, like Steve Smith is for Carolina and leave Mathis on KR and have Buchanon do PR the rest of the time.

Trade the only player that actually got me out of my seat every time he touched the ball? Oy vey.

And may I add:

Trade the only player to make the other players on the sideline stop what they are doing and watch????????????????

That pretty much sums it up. The one bright spot in a dismal 2-14 season and we want to trade him away.
nobody wants to trade him away (as in the Texans)....but I would if someone offered a second rounder - honestly. Mathis is fast and all but may never be a position player full time other than special teams. You should expect a second rounder from a deep draft to start.

You stole the words from my finertips.

Except I think saying a 3rd round pick is generous. As far as other teams are concerned, he is ONLY a KR.
