Anheuser-Busch and its Bud Light brand plan to replace Coors as the NFL’s official beer sponsor beginning in the 2011 season.

Terms were not immediately available, but sources said A-B is paying twice what Coors paid.

Coors has been an NFL league sponsor since 2002. A-B was an NFL sponsor from 1988-2001, sharing the category for some of those years with Miller.

“The sponsorship did a lot for Coors as far as getting out front of competitors like Bud and Miller,” said a knowledgeable industry source, “but they just reached a point where the value wasn’t there for what the NFL wanted.”

A-B’s domestic share of the beer market is around 50 percent, while MillerCoors combines for 31 percent.

Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev owns Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis. A-B InBev reported revenue of $36.8 billion in 2009.

I anxiously await the day when beer sponsors go the way of tobacco sponsors. Of course, then we'll probably have "NFL, sponsored by Jimmy Johnson's Enhanced Johnson" or some crap.

Does it really matter that either is the official NFL sponsor? Bud advertised during every NFL game anyways.

This isnt like a NFL video game license, where it would essentially put coors out of business.

one terrible product replaces another. capitalism continues on its golden path of medicority. god bless america.

Tell that to Jerry..pretty sure he will be a Miller Lite guy again just to stick it to the NFL..His stadium, his way.....

If this means we don't have to see those guys doing fake interviews with former NFL coaches along with Mike Ditka, then I'm all for it.

My thoughts exactly. Great beers don't need the exposure by doing things like sponsoring the NFL. How many Shiner commercials have you seen?

Shiners problem is they over charge for their beer. It is made right here in Texas yet they price it like it is an import. I can buy Yeungling lager (made in Pennsylvania) cheaper and it is better beer.

the better the product, the more it's gonna cost. that's the way it goes.

edit: sports excluded, obviously

If you ask me the biggest problem is with how restaurants and bars treat it. I've seen it so many times along with Sam Adams as "imports". It pisses me off every time too.

Far as A-B being the official beer sponsor. Could care less. I hate Coors anyway and will only drink stuff like Bud or Miller when I'm on a tighter than usual budget.
