Andre Johnson released - cut by Colts - signs with Titans

Thank you for all you've done for us Andre. I'll never forget those memories.

With that said, I hope we utterly destroy you when you play us.

Among other things, H-Town doesn't offer a contender with a great quarterback. They offer Mallett or Hoyer behind an offensive line that is being reworked.

Well, true, at least not until 2015!! Mallett is going to make A.J. regret leaving us.

Gotta' have faith, man.

Why F him? Because the Texans released him and he wants to win? Geez, get over it.

Honestly, I feel like this is a big "F you" from AJ to the fans of the Texans. The one team he decides to go to has been the team that has stood in the way of the Texans playoff chances every year. Outside of that one terrible 2011 season for Indy the Colts have made the playoffs every year since the Texans inception. He could have chose 30 other teams and I wouldn't be feeling this way but he decided to play for the Colts.

He was offered more by the Chargers. He has an agenda.

I hope our secondary knocks the living **** out of him every time he touches the ball against us next season and hits him hard enough each time to cause a fumble. Him joining the Dolts just leaves such a bitter taste in my mouth.

It's not an FU to the fans. He wants to stick it to the HC, GM and Owner. He has every right to pick whatever team he wants.

The #Chargers offered Andre Johnson more money than he got with the #Colts.

Andre Johnson said he will not wear No. 80. It’s a new chapter so he will don No. 81.

Andre Johnson on the top priority he was looking for when Houston released him: “Andrew. Luck."

It's not like free agents control who makes them offers.

What do we say about every FA we're trying to woo? - "well they'll go to a contender if given the choice" or "we'll have to overpay to get them." He got an offer from a contender with a great QB. Get over it.

He made his mind up even before he got released.... And talked Gore out of going to Philly. I'm convinced that getting offers had nothing to do with it.

He has every right to pick whatever team he wants.

I never said otherwise. He just happened to go to the one team that directly effects our Texans. I would have cheered him on if he would have chosen 29 other teams instead. The Colts are the enemy and now AJ is the enemy.

Why?

Because he wouldn't show up to camp and be a leader?

Or because he drops passes and fumbles now?

Just curious which part was the teams fault.

Also want to see where BoB has confirmed the "40 catch" comment. No way that was ever said. The system allows the QB to walk up to the line and choose the best play. AJ could have theoretically been targeted every damn play if the defense showed the right set.

Bunch of BS by a crybaby. Maybe Luck will go down and Indy will bring in Schaub so they can rub moose-knuckles ...

But ... but ... you said definitely.

Never been so glad to be wrong. Phew.

Would have been upset if Andre Johnson went to New England, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, or Indianapolis Colts.

So yeah, I'm upset. And it's thoroughly ok to be. Upset at Andre, upset at the team, upset at the whole situation.

Rivers and haven't won 10 or more in 5 years v. Luck and 2 division championships. With no animosity at all, I'm going option B.

He made his mind up even before he got released.... And talked Gore out of going to Philly. I'm convinced that getting offers had nothing to do with it.

I'd say it's safe to say the Colts told him they would make an offer or at least had an interest while he had permission to talk to other teams. Beyond that we know San Diego and the Colts made offers. He didn't have free range to pick any team in the NFL.

Dre will get a standing ovation when he comes to Houston next year, but right after that the love ends. Really wanted him to get a ring...just not with the Colts. Sadly enough, it is now the Texans mission to make sure that Dre never sniffs the Lombardi. Some things never change.

Its going to be interesting watching KJ and JJo cover Dre next season because they know each others tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses.

Anyone know how helpful he might be in giving away information about the offense after a season of running it? Id assume that there would still be more to install in year two, and by his play last year Id also assume that he has not mastered it. Though not exactly the same, our offense certainly resembles the Pats (last year was a more limited, run-first version), so I kinda feel like Indy has a pretty good idea of what we do anyway.

After signing with Indy, I hope Dre has a long, injury free career with a plethora of Wild Card Round losses.

If you believe he has 2 years left, why is it prudent to cut him & not get his cap number in line with your expectations?

Especially considering he says he only wants to play 2 years.

It was prudent b/c it was a decision that was looming anyway. He is just about at that point in his career where he was going to fall over the hill. Furthermore, whatever BoB is building here, AJ was likely not going to be here to see it come to fruition due to his age and erosion of skill. Whether it happened last year, this year or the year after, The FO was going to have to deal with his cap number at some point.

& Let's face it, AJ hadn't been right since his buddy Ed Reed came here and got in his ear. After he left, I seen a change in AJ and AJ himself knew this day was on the horizon - evidenced by what he did last year. So even if an attempt would've been made to get his cap number in line with expectations, there's no guarantee that he was going to accept it.

Better to just rip the Band-Aid off than to peel it off slowly.....which is what I think they tried to do until AJ rebuffed them. Noone should be mad at him...or the FO for how all this went down. I just think it's that AJ showed a little diva in him that he hadn't displayed here before is what has folks ticked off. They thought he wasn't or couldn't be like that.

They don't owe him a thing which makes Andre look bad. Oh well. He DID go to "The U" after all. :bubbles:

No they owe him nothing. McNair paid Andre handsomely. We all wish the Texans had more success as a team. It didn't happen, but I hope it happens with or without Andre.

Chargers not only offered more money, they had a jet waiting at the airport for AJ. Ooops.

so has "offered more money" managed to become as meaningless as "we can still be friends' in one single off-season? I know i believe it about the same.

I never said otherwise. He just happened to go to the one team that directly effects our Texans. I would have cheered him on if he would have chosen 29 other teams instead. The Colts are the enemy and now AJ is the enemy.

Yeah that sucks but I'll get over it. I hope Kareem Jackson lights him everytime he tries to make a catch. I wish Andre well going forward, but he's gone and I don't take it personally that he's with a rival.

Luck's view:

Andrew Luck said:
I'm really excited about the prospect of throwing passes to a legend like Andre Johnson. Obviously I have a lot of work to do this off-season in learning Andre's traits to help maximize our effectiveness together, the most difficult will be teaching myself to under-throw the football.

Let's not change the question. You said he still had two years left in him. If you could have aligned his cap hit with his projected production, why would it have been prudent to cut him?

If you think his production is about to fall off "any day now" that's one thing. It's a gamble... we'll have to see how it plays out.

But if you think he's still got two years left, straight up releasing him is not prudent. Releasing him with no compensation in return even less prudent.

Anyone thinking releasing Andre for nothing in return is prudent is lying to himself. Our division rival, unquestionably the better team since the inception of our team, thought enough of him to give him a three year $21M contract. Could we not have gotten something for a $7M/yr asset?

By high sell low, ditch your assets invest in fodder....

This whole thing stinks from the get go & if you're blaming Andre, you're sheep. Plain & simple. Sheep.

I think Andre got his feelings hurt and he wants retribution.

O'Brien sent Andre packing and reminded him that it's not personal it's stricly business.

The Texans had their chance with AJ and now it is over. Time to move on and cheer for our team I am not sports mad or any kind of mad I just wish AJ would have won here. That is all. He didn't but life goes on for me. GO TEXANS

Maybe an outside view will be a little less butthurt biased:

We viewed the Colts as Johnson's most sensible landing spot all along. He made it clear last offseason that finishing his storied career with a Super Bowl contender ranks high on his list of priorities.

With the accomplished veteran trio of Gore, Johnson and pass rusher Trent Cole under contract -- and several more signings to add depth -- Indianapolis already boasts a stronger roster than the one that made it to the AFC Championship game in January.

Andrew Luck immediately becomes the biggest quarterback advantage of Johnson's 13-year career, offering the rare ability to throw his receivers open.

Even if he's inching toward a decline phase, Johnson is a substantial upgrade on the injury-ravaged version of Wayne that held Luck's aerial attack hostage down the stretch last season. His presence will also allow the Colts to ease in promising prospect Donte Moncrief, who is still untrusted as a raw route runner.

In Gore, Johnson, Moncrief, playmaker T.Y. Hilton and talented tight-end duo Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, Luck now has the benefit of the most reliably productive collection of skill-position talent since he was drafted at No. 1 overall in 2012.

Johnson and Gore have chosen the ideal spot to increase their Hall of Fame odds with the added lure of potentially walking off into the sunset.

Indianapolis offers a symbiotic relationship, increasing the Super Bowl opportunity for the players as well as the organization.

His camp and the Texans have both said he asked to be released.

McNair said publicly last year he wanted AJ to retire a Texan.

What more basis is needed?

It is not clear at all, in fact defies logic, that the Texans would have paid out his contract as was.

There was no point in a meeting at all if that was the case. The meeting was either to get a pay reduction or provoke his departure.

They don't meet this time of year just to chat about football. And Rick Smith and an agent wouldn't be involved in a football discussion with no monetary implications.

Never said anything about money. Said if he wanted to retire a Texan he could have.

Fairly confident he could have for as much or more than he just signed for.

If I had lived AJ's football life I would have done the same thing -- go for the ring.

(Andre, don't forget to leave the playbook on your way out.

I took what you said to mean even if Andre plays his contract out, nothing says he finishes his career in Houston, correct? That his asking to be released is not the be-all and end-all of whether he ultimately retired a Texan.

Anyway, that's how I took it.

That hardly matters anyway. The people whining about Andre the most are probably the same ones that were doing the toughest talking that he should be cut because he was washed up and not worth the cap savings.

It's just a business - until the fans get their panties in a wad.

Problem is his ego has inflated to the point he believes he can "display his skills" and be the missing link for a team like the Colts. He isn't and wont get his ring in Indy.

Just don't see it happening.

Not sure what the source for this is, but...

Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith
Andre meant it when he said he wanted to remain with #Texans. His side buckled down hard before new talks began, though. No middle ground.

The Texans were always going to ask him for a pay cut. His uncle said he'd be open to it IIRC. Not sure what else happened, but something obviously did. I feel like he's wanted out of Houston since 2013 (remember him walking off the field after exchanging words with Schaub?)

I'm fine with him leaving Houston. I just hate it that he went to the Colts. Hope we can beat his ass 2 times next year and win the division. That would feel good.

He will probably sign a one day contract with the Texans so he can retire a Texan

Do we need bigger things to worry about if freedom for a player makes us so furious?

Like ISIS hiding in your closet or under your bed?

I'm sports angry, not real life angry. I'm also sure this will go away eventually. It just sucks that he decided to stick it to my team.

This. One thousand times this. I'm tired of people not comprehending sports fans and telling me to "calm down", even from other sports fans.

Of course this crap is not real life. I'm not kicking my cat or being mean to my kids over any of it. Matter of fact, nobody beyond this board or one social network even have an idea that I care about any of it.

This is all in the sports bubble. Quit trying to pop it with self-righteous BS. :runaway:

I have no idea what kingtexan was/is trying to say at this point.

I think we have some facts, some reasonable surmise and black holes. One of the black holes is what the Texans would have done if AJ listened to OB and said "fine." I think it's obvious from the timing/attendees that the meeting was about money.

So what would OB/Smith have done if AJ said "fine," followed by "will you take a paycut?" - "no"?

If you can't answer that one then you don't know if AJ could have retired here if he wanted to.

I feel like he's wanted out of Houston since 2013 (remember him walking off the field after exchanging words with Schaub?)

This doesn't make sense to me. Yeah I remember that, and then he went and asked the Texans for assurances he would remain with the Texans. That doesn't spell wants out.

If I had lived AJ's football life I would have done the same thing -- go for the ring.

If I had lived AJ's football life I would have...left a LONG time ago. "Loyalty" is for suckers!! (like us fans! :D)

This is entertainment

Indeed. And this is like Opie getting beat down to death in Sons of Anarchy. I hate to see that happen to that character, just like I hate seeing Andre betrayed by and betraying Houston.

Also, just for the record. If I'm at the Colts game next year, I stand up and clap when AJ is introduced. He's earned it, and he deserves it. After that, he's the enemy.

I'd wear an AJ jersey and still boo his ass. If you aren't on my team, you're the enemy. The day he signs his 1 day contract to retire as a Texan I'll cheer for him. Until then booooooo!

Texans released a whining diva who was butt-hurt and acted like a little *****.

Make no mistake. He now plays for the enemy. Thus, he IS the enemy. AJ knew that before signing, so he should expect to be treated as such.

Eff em.

Honestly, I feel like this is a big "F you" from AJ to the fans of the Texans.

He was offered more by the Chargers. He has an agenda.

Well now my tune has changed....**** you AJ !!!!!

Jesus, the butt-hurt is awfully strong in here!

The finest player in Texans history is leaving.
He's leaving to a (hell, "THE") division rival.
That's it.

Personally, I wish him several more good years to ensure his bust sits in Canton (where it belongs).

I hope he avoids injury.

I'll applaud when his name in announced @ NRG.

I hope we beat the Colts into the turf everytime we play.
