Andre Johnson released - cut by Colts - signs with Titans

Has Bob McNair or the Texans released a statement yet?

Kind of:

Johnson spent 12 years with the Texans, Johnson caught 1,012 passes for 12,597 yards and 64 touchdowns and helped the team to their first postseason success since entering the NFL. General Manager Rick Smith called Johnson “Hall of Fame-caliber” as a player and said that no one else in franchise history “has represented the team, city and community in a more professional way.”

“I have so much respect for Andre Johnson and what he’s meant to this organization,” coach Bill O’Brien said in the statement. “Andre carried himself as a true professional and did everything that we asked him to do. Andre will go down as one of the best receivers to every play this game. We are thankful for what he has done for our organization and wish him well on his future playing career.”

Had to see Emmitt Smith playing for the Cards, not much tops that.

I think this is different. Jerrah tried to keep Emmitt, but Emmitt didn't want to take a pay cut or a reduced role. He thought he was still a feature back, a work horse. I think that first year in Arizona was a wake up call & he probably worked his butt off that second year to finish on a "high" note.

I think Andre can still play. Maybe not a #1, but definitely a #2. He goes to New England, Seattle, San Diego, Indy... & he's in the starting lineup.

$16M cap hit was way too much. I get that. Was there anyway we could have worked it out to where his cap hit was more in line with his production? For a decade we're trying to build a defense to cover Marvin Harris & Regie Wayne, then Regie Wayne & T.Y. Hilton. We can't put three or four years of Andre Johnson & DeAndre Hopkins together.

& at least the Patriots got a 1st round pick for Richard Seymour. We got nothing for Andre. At least the Patriots got a young TE & a fourth round pick for Mankins. We got nothing for Myers.

But hey... we're in the big league now boys. We got Bryan Hoyer & his understudy to lead us into the future of NE South.

Not sure about an actual statement from the Texans, but this pretty much says it all

Was gonna happen, but now that he's officially been released and with the announcement it's sad.

Stop feeling sad. It's a business. No room for sentiment. Guy was here for 12 years. Trust your future. Onward and upward. Hope and change.

Nobody will ever replace Dre, it would be like trying to replace Earl, or Hakeem, but I really hope the Texans do something to get another high caliber player to replace him. Nuk is good and all, but this offense really needs another playmaker to pair with him, and Foster.

Emmitt was a free agent and they just couldn't come to an agreement on a new contract.

He was hampered by a rare injury his 1st season in Arizona.

Well, I arrived a little late to the party (got into football around 2004) and so Dre was the last of the 'original' (to me) Texans. There were times when he was the only talented player on our roster. Those few years where he was tackling 3 players on his way into the end zone just when Schaub was at the height of his limited yet serviceable powers will live long in the memory and its rare I feel this way but regardless of where he goes Ill be rooting for him to get a ring and double digit TDs because he'll be a Texan again the day he's inducted in Canton.

Thanks for the memories Andre and best of luck for the future.

Those players were younger and under contracts that were easier to swallow. Nobody is going to trade for a 33 year old receiver that is owed $16 million. Not when the draft is again loaded with talent and there are a lot of younger and cheaper options available on the free agent market. Yeah, he was one of the best of all time, but he's not a #1 and on a lot of playoff teams he might not be a #2. I wish there was a way to have kept him around, but he obviously wasn't willing to reduce his salary and take on a lesser role to stay here.

I hate the business of professional football.
I think the NFL needs a Larry Bird exception to the cap for a 10 year vet who has been with the same team throughout his career. Maybe Andre wanted out. Maybe O'Brien wanted to go in another direction. But if this was just about $$$, then it's not right.

Definitely. They have one limited to the very lowest paid players. Make one for long term players as you suggest.

Sorry dude but we bought #80 jerseys and cheered for him for a loooooong time. We didn't cheer for executives or front office staff members. This is also entertainment and a lot of people spend money on this business so yeah we are going to feel sad on a man we watched MAKE this team and at times be the only bright spot on this team.

I've been told that you can't feel this way. Sorry.

Sucks, but at least Bud taught me not to get too caught up in the one-way loyalty that is professional sports. :-(

And I hate to say it, but I hope is career is nothing but fail from this point on.

Can't expect a dude who cheers for Texans spreadsheets and expense accounts to understand what we feel.

It's fine to feel pain at Andre's leaving, most of us do.

But it's not fine to rant and rave and curse and act like a complete douche or to act like Second Honeymoon after pretty much any draft choice.

So, go ahead and work through your pain.

I think thematrix was half mocking some who are downplaying the event of AJ being released.

I would be more upset about it myself but since last summer I had a feeling he would be gone sooner rather than later. I was prepared for this day.

Well, as someone who has spent lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of hard-earned cash on this team, I agree with you, but, as much as we like individual players, we (I) root for the team. The entity that is the Houston Texans.

I love Andre. I will miss that dude big time. But, I also understand this had to happen. As much as I want Andre to win a Super Bowl, I want THIS TEAM to win a Super Bowl more.

It would have been nice if both things had happened at the same place, but, it didn't, and I wish Andre the best, and will continue to cheer for this team.

Honestly, this might be the best signal yet that we are running things differently. When I think of the franchises that have sustained periods of success, they are willing to let players go. Neither Montana nor Rice finished in SF. The Steelers, the Patriots, Even the Ravens to a degree. I can't think of a team in history that tried to hold on to Receivers that was successful over the long term. You can pay a QB big money and a premium but as much as I like AJ, this might be the most mature move the Texans have made to date.

Mike

Thank you for your amazing patience and dedication with this organization over the years. Take care, can't wait to see you in Canton.

And don't ****in' sign with the Colts.

I root for the cheerleaders, the beer vendors and the tailgating food.

For me, it's a sad day in Houston. AJ is/was a class act & a joy to watch play the game. I don't feel sorry for him, because he requested this. He's healthy, made a fortune playing this game & will land with another team shortly. If the Texans are unable to get to or win a Superbowl next year, I really hope AJ wins it on the next team he signs with. I just wish we would've been the team to earn him a Superbowl ring.

I understand it's a business & that no matter how great a player once was, it always comes to an end at some point. If guys like Earl Campbell & Hakeem Olajuwon, as great as they were, couldn't finish their careers here then I have to accept the reality that AJ won't either. I wish him great success with his new team & I embrace the new challenge before us to replace AJ & continue our journey to greatness.

Good luck AJ. Unless of course, you go to Indy, Tennessee or Dallas. In which case I'm going to boo you unmercifully & hope you lose every game you play from here on out. :D

Mike

That is exactly how I feel. Thank you for saying it.

As much as this hurts, this also feels like this franchise has "grown up" a bit, and finally opened its eyes. It's that bittersweet moment when you realize your kid is growing up: you're happy that they're growing as a person, and somewhat sad that they're no longer the little kid anymore.

Capwise, maturitywise & all that other bullcrap... how much difference would it have been had we cut Jjo?

If we've "grown" as you say, wouldn't we have got rid of all three of Myers, Aj, & Jjo?

When AJ goes to the Colts and destroys us 2 times next season and leads the league in yards and receptions while all we have is Hopkins who is not near as good being the only threat, many here will scream a different tune then about how dumb the Texans were for letting him go and this and that.

It is amazing to me that how so many Fans here can just throw AJ away so quickly after 12 seasons and all he had done for this franchise.

If he had a horrible season yes then i could understand, but he didn't. Yes he had a down season but the season before he had 1300+ yards, and a majority of those yards came when Keenum the gun slinger took over.

AJ still has more skill and can play better than any of the WRs who will be on the roster next season. So now we have 1 WR, no TEs, no starting Center, 2 back up QBs (i do like Mallett).

Can anyone tell me how this has been a productive off season so far ?

I don't know of one fan that has "thrown AJ away." What I have seen is people saying that this team could really use the cap space that Andre's release frees up.

Also, I'm kinda tired of the "What if they go to another team and beat us??!!" cry from fans in Houston. I hear that from Texans, Rockets and Astros fans whenever someone leaves. Who cares? If Andre goes on to have success elsewhere, good for him.

Since you mentioned the Colts: I highly doubt if they regret releasing Peyton Manning.

I'll throw him away for good once he signs with New England.

Haha yeah cause they were in the suck for luck sweep stakes. they had a plan.

And BTW let's see what we do with all this cap, no point in having it so you can just over pay the scrubs you have (which the Texans have a habit of doing).

If we sign a big name WR to take his spot than great, but i highly doubt we sign anyone who will make any kind of impact, just based on the Texans history. but i guess we will all see in time.

Yes, the Colts PURPOSELY lost games in order to get Andrew Luck. Yep, they did.

Sweet Jesus.

No proof they didn't, not to mention Peyton was coming off of career ending surgery to his neck. They were a little concerned which is understandable. Hell how many people were wanting us to sign that old man, A LOT.

Point is i think it was a dumb business move to cut ties with AJ, because honestly who is going to take his spot ? Hopkins can't carry this offense tha way a young AJ had to do all them years with no help. Now that AJ finally gets a solid #2 WR (which he hasn't had his entire career) we get rid of him.

I don't think the players did one bit. But I don't think you can really argue their decision making on QBs for that season was anything but intentional fail.

Curtis Painter, Dan Orlovsky and Methuselah was not trying to win.

Wish this did not happen but with the way in which rookie WR's play today I am not too worried about this.

He isn't better than Hopkins.

Aj was still double teamed a majority of the time last season, Hopkins faced a lot of one on ones. This coming up season Hopkins will face a lot of double teams. We should see how he handles that.

Plus Hopkins has to do it more than one good season to proclaim him as good, he has a lot more to prove to show me he is any where close to AJ.

Whoever he signs with Dre wont finish the season. He is 34 freaking years old and if no one else has noticed he was not exactly a pillar of good health recently

You can't pay someone 16 million a year to play 12 games a season. The best ability is availability. You don't think you can replace 900 yds and 3 TD's? I love the guy but football is a business. The best to ever play receiver didn't finish with SF.

Very good points. And telling fans they don't have any heart for seeing Andre' leave is also bunk. We have not heard the whole story. I know him holding out last year left a sour taste for McNair. Andre' did drop some big time balls this past season, which he rarely used to do in his youth. He's also had one or two significant hits which forced him into the concussion protocol.

Why not give some younger guys a chance? We all need opportunities at our jobs and in our lives in order to grow.

It's time to trade-in the great car that has given us many wonderful miles.

OK, let's not start making stuff up now. AJ has missed 1 game in the last 3 years.

And yes Rice left SF...when he was 3 years older than AJ...and had 2 more 1200 yd seasons afterwards at 38 and 39 years old.
