Amobi Okoye returns to football after (non-football related) 13 month coma

Section516

Warrior
OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was cleared by doctors Thursday for full football activities 13 months after being placed in a medically induced coma at a Houston hospital to stabilize recurring seizures.

Okoye was diagnosed in March 2013 with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a potentially lethal brain injury that includes seizures and memory issues.

He is the first football player to attempt to come back from the disease.

He was cleared by Dr. Imo Aisiku after a trip to Boston and will rejoin the Cowboys in Dallas. The disease is relatively new, discovered in 2007. In order to begin practicing, Okoye will have to be removed from the non-football illness list.

Says he lost 90 pounds...

That's a long time...

I don't see how he can come back and play this year or maybe even ever.

I'm glad he's feeling better and can take another shot at it. I don't think the results will even at best be much different than before though. Amobi didn't make much of a wake when he was in the game and I think that's probably why I never noticed his absence from it. He stopped playing defense and basically nothing changed for offenses everywhere.

I'm happy that he's healthy again though. No doubt about that.

I wish him well and he is after all only 20 and has time to become a better football player.

He had 4 sacks as a spot player the season after leaving the Texans. Not saying he was great but maybe better utilized.

27.
I was referring to each season people stated how young he was and had time to get better. Seemed he was 20 forever.

man he really loves playing football because wasent he a pretty smart guy High IQ he could prob do something else

It was actually almost 3 months. Glad to so see his entire future not destroyed.....a very fortunate recovery.

The interesting part about this disorder is that it is usually found in females (~90%). Even after its identification as a distinct disease entity in 2007, affected patients continue to commonly be misdiagnosed with combined psychiatric and seizure disorder, and end up being treated with anti-psychotic and anti-seizure medications. Those that are properly diagnosed and treated with immunotherapy have a very good prognosis. Even with proper treatment, though, if the diagnosis is delayed for too long, there is a 15% mortality.

Amobi Okoye made a remarkable recovery from a serious illness that halted his NFL career in 2013 and was able to earn a spot on the Cowboys roster last offseason, but his time in Dallas has come to an end without Okoye making it back into an NFL game.

The Cowboys announced that they have released Okoye, who spent all of last season on the non-football illness list after joining the team in early August.

Okoye was diagnosed with anti-NMDA encephalitis in March 2013 after he began having seizures that led him to be placed in a medically-induced coma. He lost 78 pounds as a result of the illness and had to relearn many of the daily activities most people consider second nature as part of his recovery.

Wish him the best.

Best wishes to him.

Didn't he talk about going into medicine after football?

Amobi also had medical school aspirations.

The 2nd seizure sent him to the hospital. Disoriented, confused. Amobi was a big man without control of his mind, a far cry from the youngest player to ever be Drafted and play in the NFL. A brilliant mind who turned down Harvard & medical school was now adrift.

Would anyone want him as a rotation DE?

I wish him the best but no, his nickname should have been "The Shopping Cart" because people pushed him around constantly. I wish we'd never drafted him. We left Revis, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch, and a bunch of other better players on the field to take him and I'm still pissed about that.

He didn't really love football.

Thanks Rick

Thanks Rick

How did you come to this conclusion?

He kept on playing when he had millions in the bank and absolutely no reason to do so if his passion was elsewhere. Then after dropping 80 lbs in a horrible illness he tried to come back.

I'm not suggesting bringing him back, just don't get how you question his heart.

JMO

How hard did he work in the offseason vs missionary trips. I want a guy who does everything in his power to get better. Does this describe OkOye?

I'm sure we will have different opinions but one thing cant be denied, OkOye didn't get the most out of his god given abilities on the football field.

EVERY SINGLE PLAYER takes time off in the offseason. It's pretty ridiculous to hold it against the ones laudable enough to get reported. But clearly the guy at home eating cheetos playing Xbox who doesn't get reported on is far more dedicated.

And JJ does a **** load of charity and promotional work. Thanks for teaching me he's a slacker who doesn't really love football.

Or...when you don't like a player you make up reasons not to like them.

You're going to have to explain OkOye.

Like I said this was MY OPINION. YOU are entitled to YOUR OPINION.

I wasn't trying to teach you anything. That would be impossible.

Sensitive?

Translation - You've got nothing.

Sensitive?

Nope and nope. My disagreement is not a sign of sensitivity. Although I might send your insight to JJ since he is lacking in dedication. Maybe his sensitivity will get him more dedicated.

Nothing = my opinion?

Where have I mentioned JJ in any of my posts? I'm not following you.

Nothing = my opinion?

Nothing as in you have no basis for your assertion. "It's my opinion" is a cop out without a because x, y and z after it.

If you apply the same standard you'd have the same criticism of JJ. You're not which shows me the standard isn't something you believe and is just an ad hoc rationalization for saying no to Okoye (which I semi agree with but for entirely on the field reasons).

Whatever counselor, I'm going to bed.

Good Night
