All encompassing Rick Smith thread

Why does Smith need to be "replaced" if he is just taking a "leave of absence"? I don't think we are getting the full story.

#Texans coach Bill O’Brien will meet with owner Bob McNair tomorrow to discuss the direction of the personnel department and the process of hiring a GM. A lot to be hammered out, including the list of potential replacements for GM Rick Smith.
McNair is pretty well up to date

Of course it sounds incredibly convienient but we've still got to give Smith the benefit of the doubt on this for right now atleast.

I would hazard a guess that McNair can easily slip out of the uncomfortable spot that he's in with his GM position. We don't know how "recent" the diagnosis was for Rick's wife; however, we have seen the street pick ups this year have not been up to par. In years past, RS could make magic out of crap during in-season transactions. This whole year was one big pile of dog crap. How long has Rick been "missing" in the media and in the front office while tending to his wife's treatment in Arizona?

As a woman, I hate Josh Innes. He's a shitbag and shouldn't be on the radio.

As a woman, I hate seeing another woman's illness used as cover instead of a man accepting his "failure" in getting moved out of a job he's had for too long.

Call me crass or whatever, but the FO and ownership of this team is soft.
Thank you.
Where you been ?

Seriously though - hearts and prayers for Rick Smith and his family.

I think McNair has a soft spot for cancer fighters/survivors after seeing how DQ was handled.

That said - Rick isn’t going anywhere. He will be back.

I see a one year consultant coming in. OB getting more power to prove it. And when Rick returns he will have to adjust if OB does well, or he will come back business as usual if OB fails and reassume his position.

They'll probably just give the responsibilities to assistant GM Jimmy Raye III and name him interim GM or something like that. I don't see big changes coming out of this organization, now.

Would be very much like the McNair's

This sounds likely except not sure about the consultant. OB gets more power with Raye as a retriever. So OB has an it's all on him year.

I would try to get Scott McCluogin formerly of 49ers and Redskins. His talent evaluations are on point, but he did battle alcoholism. He still runs a scouting service. The bigger question would be, why give OB more control? We've seen the offense suck minus Watson for years. We've seen this movie of players not developing under him.

So now what? Who are the best GM prospects out there? Will Rick return at some point in another position? Big changes ahead for this team!

Nick Caserio is who BOB wanted over personnel last offseason and got shot down.

Brian Gaine worked well with BOB in the past and I would love to see him as GM.

What I hope is this is a face saving move for Ricky and if/when he comes back the McNair's let him nowhere near the personnel dept.

Why if OB is picking the ducks?

Having the same background when is comes to finding/evaluating talent is one of the most important things. A guy in the EP system doesn't mesh with a WCO system guy like BOB/Ricky were. It's like polar opposites.

Lots of GMs and scouts work in/for different systems.

Ozzie Newsome for instance has GM'd over:

Run n shoot, WCO, Air Coryell

3-4, 4-3

So, he's taking a leave to focus on family and his wife's breast cancer issue and that is awful, no doubt, but it just seems a little too convenient.
I believe this is the coolest face saving boot there could have been but I wouldn't expect any differently from this organization.

My bad. This has already been touched on in the Rick Smith all encompassing thread so, feel free to remove if you deem necessary, mods.

That thread is outworn imo. This is worth a new one. But did you have a link?
If we're hiring, let's get Peyton Manning.

So is he on leave long enough to hire an acting GM?

I seriously doubt it but I'm not in control of that decision.
I'd imagine OB1 is given another year or two to make it happen.. he'll bave some say or at the very least a rapport with the future GM.

Looks like everyone's dream has finally came true. Especially Steel the biggest Rick Smith hater on here.

Now let's pray that his wife beat that ugly monster Cancer.

Not a hater, The man was just not good enough at his job to bring a championship to this city.

I will have his wife in my prayers. What's her name? I dont want to have to Google it.

Just to make it official:

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...-absence/4e87969c-1ce1-4eb9-ac49-f3becc404119

“Effective immediately, I have chosen to take an extended leave of absence to focus my attention and intention on my wife's complete recovery from her recent diagnosis of breast cancer. We are faithful and trust in God's promise of healing and Wholeness. I am eternally grateful to the McNair family for their unwavering support during this trying time. This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this team both on and off the field. I remain committed to our quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston, yet my family needs me now and they are my priority.”

Claasy statement.

Hopefully he's committed to being nowhere near the personnel dept/Cap or McNair's ear in his quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston.

No sympathy for the man ? In case you didn't hear this cancer is some serious stuff, she could die. You've apparently not had a loved on the receiving end of a cancer diagnosis ?

One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Everybody has

My prayers are going out to Tiffany Smith tonight.

Happy New Year

I dunno. I get the Smith frustration and the desire to see a gm change but man he had a hell of a draft. Watson, Cunningham, Cole will be long term starters. Foreman, Davenport and Watkins could also be starters but will certainly be part of a rotation at their respective positions.

If they had a healthy Watson and either Mercilus or Watt they would primed to make some noise in the playoffs.

I would love to see McCloughan as GM.

With the McNair's it's not gonna happen.

Watson was sheer luck... he was only one of top 3 available at agreed upon #12 draft slot, Cunnigham was BPA and position of need. Coles wasn't drafted. Don't give him too much credit for an untried draft class

"Extended leave of absence" is well-defined as anywhere from 12 weeks to 6 months.
I don't think Smith will be back in this job. Even when need for his the Leave of Absence is over - assuming Tiffany wins her battle with cancer - think Smith will no longer be a big part of the draft process.

And do you really think her battle with cancer (and Smith's need to spend more time with her) will be over in six months??

Really?

To be fair, Doc didn't mention his opinion in the quoted... leave of absence is longer than an 'extended vacation' but shorter than a resignation

Doc was citing the Family & Medical Leave Act definition which the Texans don't have to follow except as a minimum. They can let RS be on extended leave as long as they want.

Look at things objectively and you'll see that there are facets to the job that Rick Smith is good at.

1st round in the draft they haven't made a bad pick for a decade now (giving Johnson and Fuller a pass due to lack of time & injury before judging them). That is some record right there.

He continuously finds good role players and starters late in the draft and via UDFA. You can't knock that.

It's his overall forward planning that has let him down. Kiddie Corners a few years back, failing to even attempt to address the Schaub injury when doc had made the prognosis for his return obvious via this site, let alone the added resources available to the Texans. And failing to address the OL this season when that was obvious 12 months ago.

These are issues that I could have made a better fist of overcoming that his FO has. And my only resource for the Texans is this forum.

Rick' s wife is ill and I wish her and him all the best in overcoming her illness. He seems a genuinely good guy, and perhaps his symbiotic relationship with Kubiak made him a good fit in the first half decade of his tenure. I'd forgive him a few of the teething troubles he had back then as building experience etc.

But above all, the fact that we just played out this season with a **** ton of cap space, enough that we could have easily carried Osweiler on the roster, and lost our 2nd round pick in the process (would have got us a really good prospect to help fix the OL this year) is the final straw for me.

He doesn't have the ability to plan for the future, to address future needs 3 years from now by setting aside the capitol now to deal with them, and twice weve seen whole units left to flounder.

I had no faith in the McNair's to make this decision, am relieved they did, and am also glad that OB is going to get one last chance, because he showed something good with Watson out there that I want to see more of.

All the best to Rick and his wife, but it's the right decision to move on.

What the hell is Steelb going to do with his time now?
