All encompassing Rick Smith thread

Not that anyone on Kirby cares what i have to say but I'm going to say this. Rick Smith is the one that needs to be fired and here is why. They drafted a franchise QB and did not consider the need to fix the OL to protect their investment. We now have a franchise QB that had an ACL issue in his first year. So did he get hurt in practice or in the Seattle game. I say it was in the game and it wasn't realized until practice. What impact will this have long term. Hard to tell. But if you are so stupid not to get OLine help for your Franchise QB and allow him to get hurt, then its malpractice and to me grounds for termination.

I will miss obrien and think we have a good coach who has made the best with the pile of poo the GM has given him. I personally feel the riff with OB and RS started with Jimmy the great and its been all downhill since. JMO

I guess you missed the whole AFC South Division Championship years for the Texans.

Here's proof:

View attachment 1968

I'm sure your reply will be that these are not NFL championships. And to that I would respond that the Oilers never did that, either.

I loved the Oilers, but I'm not going to go revisionist history to support an agenda.

The truth is there is not much difference with Houston pro football between the Oilers and Texans. Yeah, the Oilers made it to a conference championship game a couple of times, but they also hold the record for the largest playoff choke in NFL history with 35-3.

I certainly don't expect anyone to read all the posts, but I've been very clear how unimpressed I am with winning a 4 team division. Unless it's backed up with a trip to the AFC Championship game, you could actually be a bad team and merely be better than 3 worse teams to win an NFL division. Since my messages recently have been primarily about the head coach, I will point out that his big division wins were against 3 teams who were collectively 36-60 during that stretch... not impressed especially when you get blown out in a playoff game, 30-0 at home against a team who "couldn't" win their division. As far as the Oilers go, that was an 8 team league, not a 4 team division. The Oilers had to be better than 7 teams not 3. The old AFL doesn't have to apologize to anyone. Their first season the AFL signed 75% of the NFLs first round draft picks, including the Heisman trophy winner and then there was that Joe Willy Namath thing. When the AFL merged with the NFL(nfl saw the writing in the wall), the AFL teams made the NFL better!

The Oilers were never one of the best franchises in the NFL, they were one of the best in the AFL. The Oilers accomplished a lot more than the Texans have and they had a lot longer to do it. Let's hope the Texans have many better years ahead.

Is there any "revisionist" history in what I posted?

6 wins never wins a division.

I never said it did. If you have a better record than three bad teams in your division, you beat them for the division title...
But surely you knew that.

you also said the most recent playoff game was a 30-0 blow out. that was the first playoff game. our most recent playoff game we were actually hanging in with the patriots in Foxboro until Brock brocked it up and we ended up losing 34-16.

Sorry, I guess that 30-0 at home still hurts more. A loss is a loss, not big on moral victories either.

They beat the Cardinals in the WC who had 11 wins
Yes, I think they got to play a WC team at home(a rule I don't like if the WC team has a better record) and then lost in the division round...
sound familiar?
The NFL has done a tremendous job with parity and keeping fans interested with average teams. The 4 team divisions with WC teams is a brilliant format to keep as many fans interested as possible. I can't think of any other sport where it means so much to so many that they were better than 3 other teams.

PS The 11 win Cardinals couldn't back it up either... it's all about the playoffs, how many really care how many regular season wins the Cardinals had back then... the teams that played in the championship games and then the Super Bowl, I think that's a different story... I think that was the year the Pat's beat Seattle in the SB, that's what I remember.

Not going to go thru the whole list but it's not correct.

2016 Fuller still here
2016 Ervin still here
2016 Dillon on Arizona PS
2015 Strong on Jags
2015 Hilliard just moved active to Redskins PS

I wasn't putting guys who were cut and picked up . I was more inclined to mention the ones who are doing well .

Strong blew out his ACL Sunday and Hilliard was cut last week IIRC .

You will soon be able to add Foreman to the injured bust list.

Too bad they didn't make him get surgery on his broken foot before the season started like CnD said.

I started following the Oilers in 1969 . I listened to a lot of radio because they couldn't sell out the game . The Oilers were a laughing stock until they hired Sid Gillman and he brought in Bum Phillips as his DC in 1975 IIRC . Before that Adams hired Bill Peterson from the 1-9 Rice Owls to coach the team . The Oilers sucked some more until Adams made Mike Holovack the VP and then the GM . After that the Oilers were an extremely talented team but never hired the right head coach .

Holovak gets little notice, but he was a great talent evaluator with the 1981 through 1993 Oilers. He was instrumental in the signing Warren Moon and acquiring the players during the Run & Shoot era. I loved the way they built the OL and DL during that time period. Can you imagine a team using three consecutive first round picks on OL (Munchak, Matthews, Steinkulher) and 2 of the 3 makes the Hall of Fame. Incredible.

Yep, and if Steinkkulher had stayed healthy there would've been 3 HOF'ers. It was generally said that Steinkulher was the most talented of the 3 before his knee injury. Steinkuhler was one of the best college OL that I've ever seen. Quick/tough/stong/smart.

BTW, if BOB stays (Doubtful) I hope he hires Matthews as OL coach.

Stop misrepresenting what I've said.

It's exactly what you said last yr when Lombardi/Glazer said BOB wanted out and there was so much dysfunction within the Texans org that McNair had to step in 2 days before a playoff game and say that BOB would be back.

If you want to clarify your position on this I would love to hear what you said at that time.

No it is not. I don't attack reporters by name. You're making crap up. And I'm not going to rehash stuff every time you want to misrepresent what transpired.

They used a 1st on Florida OT David Williams ( baby gate ) and got Don Maggs a talented OT
from the USFL also .

Of course your not.

You say things like the national media and I say who actually reported those things. (Same thing.)

This just represents your inability to admit that you were wrong in this case.

The divorce papers aren't even filed. The story is not complete. You're premature.

I also don't generalize about national media, MSM, etc. I discuss individual articles/stories. That's 2 whiffs on the kinds of comments I even make. Your memory is beyond faulty.

Keep on shoveling some may buy what you're selling.

Houston Texans: Owner Bob McNair has a decision to make. Coach Bill O’Brien has made it clear he wants to return and won’t quit on this team. Quarterback Deshaun Watson has voiced his views on O’Brien, too. That team is attempting to keep O’Brien in Houston. But there is a clear disconnect between O’Brien, who is under contract for one more season, and general manager Rick Smith. One way to remedy that is an option sources say McNair is considering: Elevating Smith’s position out of the football operation and giving O’Brien more say in personnel decisions. That could mean a promotion for assistant GM Jimmy Raye III or the hiring of a new personnel chief.

Was watching NFL Network this morning. They said BOB is likely to stay. But the bigger news is that they are hearing that Smith will be moved OUT of football operations into some other role, and that BOB will be given more power. Details were unclear as to structure and what that means. I still regard this as rumor, but I'd regard it as strong rumor.

No matter what happens three quarters of the annonymous sources, rumors, speculation & MB prognostication are going to prove wrong. Or incomplete pieces of a picture wildly speculated on as if full information.

I feel like we've heard that Ricky is gonna be moved to a different job for 3 years now.

And Obrien last year was supposedly gonna quit and again that tons of teams were looking to hire him

It seemed to me that all of the rumors and rumblings that I heard yesterday and last night, involved Bob .... and who would be the team to pry him away from the Texans. FO brings in new coaches and players who are highly thought of, and we still founder. The only constants remain Smith and the McNairs. The players seem to be on board with their head coach. Many of the most vocal supporters, are the most experienced players, whom it would seem, are familiar with and understand our issues the best. I would think it wise to keep Bob for at least the duration on his contract and move Ricky to an obscure upper level position.

Watson, Hopkins & Clowney are our most experienced players? Combined they have 10 seasons and 2 have never played for another HC.

Cushing came out and said that O'Brien is a player's coach and a good head coach, and that if you asked any other player they would tell you the same.

You mean just returned from suspension, praying not to get cut, travesty OB named him captain Cushing?

Ok, I'll give you that one. I think FA punter Lechler said something nice as well.

We've ended a season with our starting QB healthy exactly 3 of 11 seasons under Rick Smith - what odds are you willing to put on Watson coming off his 2nd ACL behind a Rick Smith built line bucking that trend in 2018? This season isn't "bad luck" - it's just the same bad plan from the same bad GM who shouldn't be given a 12th time to prove it.
