All encompassing Rick Smith thread

Just my opinion of Rick Smith based on situation the Texans are in presently.
The GM has to be concerned with the long term view of the team. Rick has been year to year worried about saving his job. He should have traded Tate this year when we might have got a 1st round draft choice for him just to point out most recent example.

See Morey for Rockets he built up talent and used them as chips to continuously make the Rockets a force. Smith just rents his players or overpays for others. (See Reed, Schaub, and others)

I can hear it now " Rick Smith just can't improve this team because of the cap."
Guess what Smith is the reason the Texans are in this situation.

McNair thinks this team is much more talented than it really is. That is the main reason I guess McNair hasn't gotten rid of Smith. Seriously Smith is the person in the brain trust with the most football knowledge on this organization? We are still drowning then.

See his resume and highlights
http://www.houstontexans.com/team/st...3-5f875710e9b2

Schaub, Yates, Brooks Reed, Mercilus, trading DeMeco, KJ, and Crick are mentioned as a few of his GREAT moves. SERIOUSLY!!!!?????

I am still pissed because I see at BEST intermittent success for this franchise.

Kind of like "Even a blind hog finds an acorn" I think sums up our time with Smith in charge.

Also don't like snakes. The right thing was for Smith to fall on the sword also instead of using it to stab Kubiak.

Tired of the excuse that maybe he didn't make the decisions. His role should have been to make the decisions. If he didn't make the decisions then what did he do, and why all of the sudden is he going to be qualified now to make decisions. If he did make the decisions then they were bad. Either way for his tenure here he has done nothing but make friends with McNair.

Just my opinion. I hope I am wrong.

No change in my opinion of him from Dec 2013.

I kinda feel like now Rick has lost a lot of his, power meaning o brien has it stands now has a lot more say in the draft and power and roster building

I think Rick is, just more of a, puppet or figured head. Just another guy with a, title

I think has it current stands today o brien has the most power

eriadoc, and JB, y'all should try to look for the silver lining.
I would love to meet Norg in person. I'm convinced he speaks exactly like James T. Kirk in real life.

For those who wanted Rick Smith's role to be reduced...

There's no better evidence that that is happening than O'Brien being the guy who went into the office with future HOF'er Andre Johnson and told him in an apparently very ham-handed way that the team was moving on from him (and his big contract).

That's the GM's job...

but the sent they new guy to do it...

MSR.
O'Brien is doing his best Chip Kelly imitation. Don't worry about Rick Smith making personnel decisions, O'Brien is making them all.

mike Tyson speaks eloquently and is actually a public speaker he just has a bad lisp

Just wanted to let everyone know that Rick Smith still sucks, and the Texans won't win anything of significance with him running the team. He should have been gone when Kubiak left.

Agreed

Good to see you back

Check your PM's

Thanks

Morey = Brilliant strategist

Smith = Yes Man

See the difference?

I cannot help but wonder if the owner is willing to do EVERYTHING to improve ALL aspects of his franchise.

I have serious doubts.

of course he's not. May be willing to do what he considers reasonable, customary and normal. But he ain't gonna go about setting trends and making enemies. And certainly isn't getting rid of grandkids godpoppa

We know the answer to this question.

The question I have is whether BOB and staff can overcome the incompetence that is these money grubbing fools. Who's the good looking woman?

The fact that Rick Smith is still with the Texans says more about Bob McNair than it does about Rick Smith.

The most truthful post ever made on this MB.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Finally the sheep are starting to see the light.

Oh please. Plenty of people have wanted Rick Smith gone for years, me included. You aren't some beacon of knowledge in a sea of ignorance. Your harping on the subject, i.e. "vitriol" posts, are far more irritating than illuminating.

Never claimed to be a beacon, I'm just enjoying watching the MB turn on Texans management. I'm wondering what the MB will be like when the Texans make the playoffs next season.

You're showing vitriol towards me. I must be getting under your skin? Thanks for making me LOL.

And thank you for making me laugh by continuing to use "vitriol" incorrectly. If you think I've been "showing vitriol" towards you, you understand neither the meaning of the word nor its proper use in a sentence.*

*This post is bordering on vitriolic, but it is full-on vitriol only if one is extremely thin skinned.

It didn't seem like you said that in a vitriolic manner

Vitriol for all

Vitriol, what happens when you drink to much Geritol

For some apparently.

Getting back to the thread, how much input do YOU think Cal is putting into the draft picks vs Smith/BOB/Gaine. Remember Cal played (Putting it generously at UT. Do YOU think the Texans are the plaything that his dad bought for him.

I think a picture tells a story, often more than the eye can see. A basic understanding of human nature and human behavior says you're assessment is probably very close if not spot on. If you were in a similar position wouldn't you want to buy the Houston Texans for you and your son? Yes Cal has more say so than most folks realize. You just have to read Cal's bio to see how many responsibilities he has with many other Bob and Janice McNair companies and endeavors to know this. (And his Momma likely insist like all Mommas do). I believe that Daddy Bob still has a firm hand on most of the day to day happenings. Much like Jerry Jones only without all the flamboyance and fanfare.

And what does that pic tell you about Cal and his inputs on draft picks?

Do YOU think he has serious input? Why?

Yes, that's why I think he and Rick are so tight. Rick takes the heat for Cal's play toy. Can I prove this no, but I find it interesting that the yr Bob McNair got sick and Cal ran the team they finished 2-14.

In short Rick Smith = Cal McNair's yes man.

wow, ok then... believe in conspiracy theories much?

It tells me that Cal has as much say and influence, if not more so, than anyone else in that room and that Cal will also be the next owner of the Houston Texans.

I believe that Houston Texans 2013 2 -14 season was DIRECTLY attributed to the total self destruction and the complete demise of Matt Schaub.

How so? Cuz he's at the front of the room?

Looks to me like the decision makers are sitting together - OB and Smith. And the McNairs are enjoying the show and available if need be.

Cal looks deeply involved in picking the restaurant for the self-congratulatory dinner.

If Jerrys son talked him out of Manziel in favor of Martin, why is it hard to believe Cal doesn't have the same influence:kitten:

Pic looks to me like Cal got to have his pick, and Rick lost the argument, with Bill appearing as if he can't believe Rick allowed it to happen

BTW it was Bob who lost his temper on the flight home from Jax and fired Kubiak the next morning not Cal. It was also Bob who is responsible for the mess the Texans are in today. At the same press conference where McNair fired Kubiak Bob also said that the Texans were a playoff team capable of winning the Super Bowl and quite adamantly and repetitively said they were not rebuilding.

Had cooler heads prevailed and understood that a new coach, with an average team, aging veterans, a mismanaged salary cap and NO QB, did in fact need rebuilding and a major house cleaning to go with it. Trading AJ last year along with a few other adjustments could've put the Texans over $40 million under the cap going in to the 2015 season. This is not hindsight because I was saying the same thing this time last year.

There is symbolism and a message in the picture. The top of the food chain and the main primary decision makers are on the front row. That picture is your Houston Texans Chain of Command

O'Brien looking at Rick says, what are you going to do Rick? And Rick says, I'm going to do what the guys in red ties said to do.

yup, everyone that actually works has a laptop in front of them... everyone but the McNairs, they're just watching

As it should be... the owner always has ultimate command. It's that way in any business. The man that writes the checks has it his way. If you don't believe it's that way in 32 NFL franchises and millions of business out there, your very naive

Looks to me like Cal got a text his mistress just got a new strap-on in, OB is pissed Cal is making him carry his weasel around, Bob can't believe his son likes being ridden like Seattle Slew and is considering selling off his stables and Rick is pissed the weasel keeps sneaking out of OB's pants distracting him.

But it takes an advanced student of human nature and human behavior to spot that.
