The article is interesting from an opinion based standpoint. Just another fan of the game. His opinion can be debated just as much as if one of us had made the same list. On a list like this...insider information doesn't change the reality of what each team produces on the field. That information is free to all, who have the time, desire, critical eye and a dash of unbiased common sense.
For me, O'Brien has done well with the talent being supplied to him by RS. Now that's O'Brien's words. Remember, O'Brien is the one who stated, "I just coach the players I am given"....not 100% sure how that got misconstrued into, I just coach the players WE HAVE SELECTED". O'Brien's biggest hurdles; micro-management, predictable game plan, clock management and critical in-game decisions.
For me, I think O'Brien's offense is what it is, in his mind. I don't think he's ever given full rein of his offense to his OC (Godfrey) to make all decisions. O'Brien's desire to be basically the OC and HC has hampered his growth as a HC, which is a shame. His game plan has been scary predictable with each and every QB except Watson. Watson's ability to stretch plays b/c of his escapability changed the called plays on the fly, which in turn allowed his receivers to create separation or create running lanes for him to exploit. My biggest concern, would they have been able to keep this up for a full season? I'm just not certain since it essentially turns the playbook into a sandlot offense where everyone improvises after the protection fails. O'Brien personally failed on 2 more occasions this season when he mismanaged the clock down the stretch. Now this could be somewhat forgivable, if this was his first season as a rookie NFL HC, but this is his 6th year as a HC (2- Penn St & 4- Houston) and the same mistakes still plague him each and every year at the most crucial times in a game. O'Brien has -since his arrival- treated any and all 3rd and long situations as an absolute running play off-center. I swear, at some point, some DC will line up his entire defense on a 3rd and long between the center and LT or TE (4- DL, 3-LB, 1- SS, 2- CB) and no deeper than 8 yards off the LOS with 1- FS freelancing outside the box in the event a brain-fart has ensued. O'Brien would then, as if on que, slam Miller right into the pile of humans on the left side and then stand there with that look on his face...damn, that didn't work!
More than likely, Watson can make O'Brien look good and hide his short-comings. This statement only remains valid if Watson can complete a full season while leading the Texans in the playoffs. In all reality, I think Watson can make any HC/OC combo look good if the offense has all the required pieces to be successful....oh, this is where the responsibility falls into RS's lap.
