Aggies hire new coach, Sumlin.

Really hasn't been confirmed yet. Sumlin resigned from University of Houston, but has not been officially announced as the HC of A&M.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Kevin Sumlin, one of the brightest and energetic coaches in the country, has been named the Texas A&M head football coach, Aggie Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced today.

"It is with great pride that we announce Kevin Sumlin has accepted an offer to become the next head football coach at Texas A&M University," Byrne stated. "We began this search process a little over a week ago and spoke to many worthy and qualified candidates, but my decision, which was made in consultation with (Texas A&M) President (R. Bowen) Loftin, kept leading me to Kevin. We met this morning to finalize the offer. I believe he is the right person to lead our football program into the Southeastern Conference. First of all, Kevin is a terrific person. He is also one heck of a recruiter and he will put together a great staff."

Yeah, pretty much. Every Saturday I'm hoping UH wins, Baylor gets destroyed (That will be back on track as soon as RG3 leaves), and now I'll be watching out for that A&M score and hoping that the rest of the SEC does what I expect them to do.
 
I just wish the NCAA had rules about other schools tampering with coaches of other teams before the season is over. It just seems wrong to me.

For the 2nd time in what, 5 years the Coogs have been abandoned by their head coach right before a bowl game, and in this case, really abandoned before the conference championship game. Money makes the world go around.

I trust Keenum and the other senior players to take control and finish off their college careers with a big win over Penn State.

Plus me. I just began to like A&M for no better reason than they were the anti-Texas but now that's gone. It's back to them being the dorky school they've alway portrayed. Still love and thank the military men and women though.

I'm a huge TAMU fan and I couldn't agree more. I've always had a problem with the way these coaches leave their teams standing at the alter if you will. It is definitely wrong and they should have to wait until after their teams season is over.

That being said I hope he does great in College Station. He's got a tough road ahead in the SEC though. Gig 'em!

UoH is the runner up in the Conference USA

Georgia is the runner up in the SEC

Which Bowl game is UoH going to?

Which Bowl game is Georgia going to?

Which Bowl game is Southern Miss Going to?

Undefeated in Conference USA is the equivalent of 6 or 7 wins in the SEC.....

The actual announcement was anti-climactic. Everyone has known it would be Sumlin for over a week. Reminds of the Texans delaying the announcement of Phillips' hiring as DC. The Texans said they were evaluating candidates, when Wade was in the bag.

The Aggies are way over their head heading into the SEC. Alabama, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia recruit top classes, year after year. Sumlin is a good hire, because he has proven he has a system that can do more with less. And he should be able to get top QBs and WRs for his system, now. I guess it's time for UH to groom another head coach for some school with more $$$.

My thoughts exactly. A&M was the school I watched most in the Big 12 and second to UH in the state of Texas. Used to like Tech until the Leach/James thing played out, used to like Baylor until Briles, used to like A&M until now, never liked UT. I guess maybe Ill adopt TCU as my secondary college team.
 
I think we need to put a call into UT and Tech and find out if either of them need us to start grooming their next HC. It just seems polite to check.
 
Not sure if this is a good fit going into the SEC. Sumlin has shown he can get an offense going and it would've been a great fit had they stayed in the offense, QB driven Big 12. He's going to have to get the defense way up past par to compete in the SEC.

But, if I was the AD I would've wanted someone who has big game experience as a HC or coordinator and have some experience in the hyper competitive SEC.

My pick would've been either Kirby Smart or Phil Fulmer.

Either way, I hope A&M is relegated to being the Iowa State of the SEC.

I agree with this.. obviously they have a lot of work cut out for them. I am, however, very excited.

Call me nuts but I think this will have a bigger impact on A&M's recruiting than most realize. It can't hurt it, that's for sure.

he's coached in two national title games, five bcs bowl games, three big 12 championships, 2 c-usa championships and countless other big games throughout his career.

as for having experience in the SEC you're right on though.

I don't know if it's the loss of Sherman or the hire of Sumlin, but the 2012 A&M recruiting class this year is losing verbal commits. It's certainly not helping much. My biggest problem with the guy is that Sumlin hasn't been able to recruit defensive players at U of H this entire time. Their defense is pathetic in an easy conference. I don't think he's going to make much of an impact at all on recruiting, and it's going to kill us down the road.

But guess what! He doesn't need us to fire the entire coaching staff so he can bring in his own guys, so A&M saved money over hiring someone good! YAY! MONEY! WHOOOOOOOOOOOP!

I honestly like the hire for the Aggies. I think Sumlin has proven that he can build a successful program with 4 & 3 star athletes. & he's going to have to in the SEC.

Until they're a 8-9 win team, the best recruits won't think about A&M.

I think Sumlin can build an 8-9 win team with A&M in the SEC. Success for A&M right now is not a National championship, it's relevance.

Believe it or not, but you just described their football program's entire existence. For the most part, they have been fighting for relevance their entire history.

A&M has won more than 7 games in a season only two times in the last ten years! And that's in the Big XII. Playing a SEC schedule isn't going to make 8 wins any easier to reach.

I stand by what I said in the beginning. Sumlin is a good coach. But he is at the wrong place at the wrong time. He won't last four full seasons at A&M before he gets canned.

The A&M job is a good gig, but not right now. Looking up and down their roster, I would be surprised if you could find 22 guys that are SEC quality. And most of the teams they will be playing against have 60-70+ of those guys. They are going to get crushed for the next three seasons.

And he was able to build a successful CONFERENCE USA program with 3 and 4 star athletes. Because he was competing against programs that couldn't recruit to that level. Everybody in the SEC can recruit above that, even lowly Vanderbilt.

Now, maybe Sumlin will be able to recruit some talent there. But he won't be the one who sees anything from it. The guy who replaces him will.

I'm fairly certain it's because they got rid of Sherman. From what I have heard he was talking to a potential recruit when he got the call. The players seemed to like him.

I don't expect them to be good anytime soon but in the long run I feel it is for the best.

You're right. He was at Matt Davis' house. He's a QB in the Klein area. After they wrapped things up, he told Davis that he should still go to A&M. That was a pretty classy thing for him to do, in my opinion.

I agree that the move to the SEC is best for A&M in the long run. Their fans are just gonna have to hang on and survive the next couple of years during the transition.
 
I think Sumlin would've been a perfect fit had they stayed in the BIG XII because offense and QB is what drives the conference. Very different in the defense oriented SEC. Sumlin's going to have to prove he recruit and run a defense that's going to keep him affloat while the transition happens. Maybe he'll be able to recruit a physical freak like Newton and Tebow. I jsut wouldn't hedge my bets on either in the short term.

I think A&M would've been better off throwing a ton of money at Kirby Smart but, hey Aggies stay with Aggies for better or worse.
