Stick to yells and leave the stand up to the professionals. The kid should have realized there's a line between (bad) humor and insult.
I'm guessing that the discipline won't end with him being 'sent home.' I think a personal apology from the kid to Paterno is in order. There were people who were quite shocked at the remarks, especially in the context of the setting, i.e., public mixed rally. I can see 'joking around' comments like this between a small group of friends at a tailgate but not this.
That said, some people will always want to get on their pedestals and make more out of this than what it deserves. Paterno had the right attitude about it. Something to the effect of "whatever ... some young guy trying [very unsuccessfully] to be funny." Move on and play the game.

No pedestal here, only logic in asking to not put kids in a position to fail while executing tradition. This blind Aggie Altruism used as a defensive countermesure makes it difficult for folks to warm up to a large part of Aggie nation.
Bonfire, swords, goalposts and this attempt at humor shows that some front end training, under adult supervision, needs to be addressed. Heck maybe training the trainers would be helpful as well.

I cannot pretend to speak on behalf of all Aggie Faithful, but I simply have to believe, knowing what I know of Aggies, and as an Aggie myself, that we do not condone or endorse this behavior. The kid (and he is a kid) got carried away and crossed the line. It is not representative of the majority, and I would hope is not representative of the young man in general. (I do not know him, so I cannot say with certainty.)
A personal apology from him to Joe Pa is in order, and I fully believe will happen.
Swords. 1984. And it was an ***** move. 23 years is a long time between ***** moves.
(Bonfire NOT being an ***** move, but a tragic accident. Yes, engineering oversight is a start. I will just stop there.)
Goalposts. You will need to take that up with the Tech fans, since they were the ones to shove their own goalpost into our fan section. As I recall, several folks were injured and a few hospitalized. I would challenge anyone to come forward with a similar example of how Aggies treat visitors to College Station. It simply would not abide. Aggies would not tolerate it.
Let's not make this one incident, by an overzealous young man who happens to be in the public eye and who most certainly was in the wrong, into something it is absolutely not: an indication of some systemic behavioral problem in Aggieland.

I don't really care to listen to it. So what exactly did he say? That A&M should beat Penn State since they have a coach on his death bed? Maybe I simply don't have any respect for the elderly but if that's all he said, I have no problem with his comment. I don't condone it, and personally would be intelligent enough not to say it. I just think everyone is always looking for something to get their panties in a bunch over. People are too sensitive. It's a game and smack talk is involved. It's part of what makes it fun. Just my opinion.
I wasn't offended by anything they said, I was more offended by their flaunting their lifestyle. If you want to be gay that is fine, but let's not demonstrate manlove in public like that. Things like that are actually disturbing to most straight males.

I agree with you, Bill. My long-winded response probably could have been shortened to my last simple statement about not making sweeping stereotypes. I thought I sensed this taking a wholly inappropriate trajectory, so I wanted to nip it in the bud with my earlier response. There I go, saving the world, one message board thread at a time. ha-ha.

My 2 favorite pubs in Austin are right across the street (Fado's and Gingerman). We occasionally sit on the patio of Fado's or Gingerman. Since the patio is facing across the street you can't help but see guys like those in that Aggie video lining up to get into Oilcan's. It can be quite the freak show on some nights.

I'll say this; JoePa is a class act all the way around. I really like that he made his team clean up the stadium after the problems they had in the off season.
As far as the Aggies and our traditions, its like riding a Harley Davidson, you don't understand and can't explain it. Further, no amount of training would have helped the Yell Leader. You can't train away youth and inexperience.

That is my point. Have a training for any club or tradition so this all goes back to youthful exuberance and does not fall on the school.

Hey no one is saying there are no bad Aggies. I'm not sure where exactly you got this? The only thing any of the Ags on here are responding to is the backlash we get from people who hate our traditions and simply want to badmouth us any chance they get. Every school has a dumbass or two.

Wrong, every school the size of A&M has a dumbass or two hundred if not thousand. Everytime an Aggie, or small group of Aggies, acts out in a manner that is blantly offensize we here the "oh, it's just a bad apple or two" or "this is just an isolated instance"; the problem is it is not. It has nothing to do with A&M as a school (despite the fact that I am certain fish camp is legalized brain washing
), and it has everything to due with the fact that you have around 50,000 kids aged between 18-22 in positions where stuff like this can happen. All big schools suffer this kind of crap, see the Vick'Em shirts from Tech, the repeated kidnappings of Reville by Longhorns, the fights on Commerce street between OU and UT fans, the Tech A&M gaolpost incident, etc. Kids, when gathered in large numbers or in smaller more closely bound groups, while do stupid things. End of story.I do not think anyone would accuse A&M of having huge issuses that need to be worked out; but most non-Aggies see Aggies as blind to some of the wrong doings at A&M (and it's not helped when most Aggies are uber quick to point out the faults in other programs, espically UT and Tech). See the 2 Aggie football palyers recently arrested, the 04 Aggie Media guide, the SMU/sabre debacle, etc.

the traditions are lame and the level of immaturity is consistently off the charts. it seems that a significant faction of the Aggie faithful think that being dumb, drunk, and ignorant will somehow help their team win. if anything, it denegrates an overall exemplary institution of higher learning. When I think of A&M, i don't think of the great academic programs or the high rate of military service amongst the student population. instead, I think of drunk dumb rednecks getting in fights, building things that kill people, all male cheerleaders dressed like some 50's era soda jerk, the 'corps' pulling out their swords on the football field, and bad football. too bad all those things overshadows the great things about A&M (the girls are pretty underrated, cheap living costs, great network of alumni, and a top notch academic institution)

So then you agree with me. See my original response (which you yourself even quoted in a reply) indicating that this one sample is not representative of the population.
The Ags I know are not blind to the faults of the few. If anything, we are acutely aware of it because, if anything, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Not because we think we are better than anyone, just because we have high expectations of ourselves. Nothing wrong with that.
Anyway.
Happy New Year, all. A blessed year. And I am quite happy to be at home with my Labrador snoring on the couch next to me, my wife fluttering about quietly putting away Christmas decor, and our firstborn upstairs dreaming about whatever 9 month old boys dream about. It was a good year.

I am proud to have gone to A&M and was strongly reminded of all I have missed and loved Sat. night at the Alamo Bowl. Yes, the outcome of the game was disappointing and the coaching decisions were incredibly frustrating (Sherman, please make sure I never see such poor playcalling by an Aggie coach in the near future), but it has been way too long since I have been to an Aggie football game. The traditions may seem outdated and corny to someone who didn't attend A&M, but for an old Ag, they are heart warming.
I don't understand the hate that is spewed by some against A&M and can only figure that it is a reflection of the person posting the hate. Many wonderful people have attended and graduated from A&M. It is very immature to continue college hatreds post college. I will always root for the Aggies and feel an extra connection to old Ags, but as a (somewhat) mature adult, cannot "hate" other Americans and Texans and I think considerably less of someone who comes on a Texans message board and spews such nonsense.
I quoted these two posts to show the contrast between the attitudes. Happy New Year Rick, and God Bless and good luck with your baby. My baby is a senior in High School this year and he has his acceptance to A&M in hand. Hopefully, we will be enjoying many more years of Aggie football.

I agree with you to the extent that as a whole A&M is no better or no worse then any other american college when it comes to instatnces like the Joe Pa comments. What I do not agree with is the constant barrage from some aggies that this are isolated instances of "1 or 2" bad apples. Please as I said earlier, anytime you have 25,000+ 18 to 22 year olds on average your going to have atleast 250 people who are a) stupid or b) just plain assholes. Yet some Aggies seem to think that since they are A&M that they have a better class of student, and therefore they are better then the rest of us.
Rick, from my expierences with Aggies, you are in the minority. I cannot keep track of all the e-mails I get from Ags I work with when soemthing goes wrong at Tech, heaven help my dad you is a UT alum; but when soemthing goes wrong at A&M it's amazing how quite it gets.
I do not hate A&M, I actively root against them twice a year (Tech and UT football games), but other then that I'm indifferent at the least and occasionally I pull for them; after all they maybe Aggies but they are still Texans.

I understand your sentiment here Hoth-Boy, but the door swings both ways. Most Texas students I have met are quick to dismiss A&M from any sort of recognition at all. Any football discussion is met with a reference to Texas' recent National Championship.
I appreciate that you take your time to write out an intelligent discussion rather than just blatantly bash the school and traditions that I love. That cannot be said for a few on here.
In the end I believe that all of this comes down to the simple fact that it is easier to point out the failures and mistakes of others rather than their successes.
