Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Houston Texans: Bill O'Brien doesn't have many other options to play cornerback, but paying Hargreaves nearly $10 million doesn't make much sense. It's possible they'll sign him to a re-negotiated deal.

Hargreaves will not play on this contract. That's for sure.

Listed in Other players in trouble:

Zach Fulton - Sure, if they plan on signing a replacement.
Senio Kelemete - For sure, period.

Senio is still on the team? I honestly didn't know. Lol

Maybe but the evidence points the talent being there just not the drive. Which I can’t say I understand, you work so hard to get to the NFL, are one of the very few to make it and now you are going to be lazy?
I wouldn't call the man lazy, I think he puts the work in. Individuals just aren't all built the same way internally, and Hargreaves could simply lack confidence. Most professional athletes all share a common trait, and that is feeling like they are the best athlete on the field/court. I think maybe Hargreaves struggles in Miami have damaged his confidence and he needs to fight his way back mentally. Sometimes they can do it and sometimes they cannot. It is worth bringing him back on vet minimum to see if he can.

What are you talking about? Are you sure we’re talking about the same guy? First he never played in Miami either in college or pro. Second he had a great college career and then was drafted 11 overall. There is nothing about any of that where his confidence should be damaged. Second he said himself he didn’t have any hussle with the Bucs, that shows lack of drive not lack of confidence. I’d say it’s more he thought he was to good for the Bucs and then got into a habit of laziness by the time he got here.

Finally let’s say you are right. This is the NFL not doctor Phil and even we aren’t stupid enough to pay a guy 10+ million in the hope he might get his crap together when he did nothing to show he would. If he is that easily shook then he has no business in the league. Hey XFL is there now, he could go be a superstar there.

I stand corrected, Tampa Bay, my mistake. Stating that he himself said he didn't have any hustle can also be a sign that he already cast judgment on himself, which could contribute to lack in confidence.

But, you are right. The NFL is no doctor Phil and I would never condone paying 10+ million to allow him time to work thru his issues, which is why I said he may be worth bringing back on vet minimum because quite frankly, the Texans don't have many other answers at the moment.

McKinney would be on that list for me. Outside of inside run defense he offers nothing. I'd try to trade McKinney and give the money to Reader. Cunningham is ready to take over as shot caller for the defense.

I told ya’ll that this guy was hot garbage. :)
thoughts on our other "lock down" dollar store CB in Gareon Conley?? You're batting 1.000 - let us have it!

100% agree about mckinney. See what we can get in trade for him. I would rather pay big money to Jordan Phillips if he becomes available or go cheap at NT than pay Reader big money.

Philips is a good player. I guess I have a soft spot for later round guys who make it big especially your homegrown guys like DJ. I would say DJ is the superior player between him and Philips so if saving a little money and hopefully not losing too much in performance is the goal then I could see it - you could use that money elsewhere on the defense, hopefully with an edge disruptor.

Interestingly, on the ride in this morning Im listening to Seth Payne mention a possibility of trading Cunningham to Detroit for Darius Slay. I think that would be a huge mistake. Slay is 3 years removed from being elite level CB. While he would be a huge upgrade for this team, at the expense of Cunningham it would be a step backward. I think Cunningham is on the verge of All Pro level ILB play.

the defense has been so shredded by Herr Obrien, that its going to be insanely difficult to navigate the cap, and hit every pick in the draft with this think tank on Kirby.

Both Cunningham and Slay are UFAs after the season. There may be some issues re-signing Cunningham, but what’s the point of trading for another expiring contract?

Still, the Texans have $64 million in cap space with likely a healthy bump coming with the next CBA. Even O’Brien should be able to work with that.

DI Jordan Phillips, Buffalo Bills
The casual fan will look at Phillips’ stat line and think this was a breakout year. He had 10 sacks after recording just six in his first four seasons combined. The issue is that the sacks didn’t come as a result of Phillips winning more of his pass-rushes or showing dominant reps with quick wins. In fact, Phillips had the lowest PFF pass-rushing grade of his career this season at 60.2.

10 of his 25 total pressures resulted in sacks – an extremely high rate – and a good chunk of those sacks came with the quarterback tucking the ball and running into his waiting arms. As a player who has yet to crack an overall grade of 60.0 in a season, it would behoove teams to not spend big money on Phillips chasing his sack total. To his credit, he did leave us with this work of art against the Miami Dolphins in Week 11.

Good chance that Watson and Tunsil ringfence nearly $50 million of that cap space though. Depending how significant that cap rise is the Texans may not be all that rich in the market this offseason, aside from maybe 1 year flyer deals.

Watson and Tunsil will eat most of that. Cunningham is a must sign for me if just comparing productivity between what Slay could bring and the arc that Cunningham is projected at. Slay on the way down. Cunningham trending way up.

this is it. MUST also hit every single draft pick this year - good luck with that one.

Let GM OBrien lay in the bed he's made. If he's lucky Watson will keep saving his job.

No, and I certainly didn't mean to imply he was... but it's critical for a 3-4 base to be strong up the middle and we've seen what happens when you have JAG there
Which is why I said if we’re going to spend big money we should go after someone better than him
