Aaron Ross

If we sign michael lewis, then I would much rather try to get rufus alexander, or another olb or cb. If not then I think it would be a great pickup.
 
Ross is a big-time playmaker & he has good speed.

All he needs is some solid technique coaching and he will be a really good player.
 
But do you think he would be the best fit for us in the second round or do you think we should address OL, Dl, S, WR, OLB

It really depends on what we do with our first pick.

Whatever we do, we are going to have to address the secondary at some point in the draft.

I would like Ross on our team as a second round pick, but it depends on who else is on the board.

Ross with the 2nd pick would be a solid pick in shoring up the defensive backfield. Picking up Lewis in FA and the Texans are much better than last year. Plus there is a realistic chance he will be available at #37.
 
Thats what I was thinking. I knew he was a great player and won the Jt award but I really started searching and people have him at like the 29th or somthing best overall player in the draft so maybe if we do draft him in the second and pick up some other key attributes via free agency then our D will will be able to handle guys like Payton for the years to come.
 
If we go CB @ some point, i'd prefer to get a big but fast guy, Ross is smallish & we already have one of those type of CB's in Dunta. We need someone that will be able to handle the TO's, Johnson's & Boldin's.
 
If you watched Ross play at all this year that would turn you off right away. I wouldn't even consider Ross before the 3rd, and wouldn't consider walking his name to the podium until the second day. Tons of guys can run fast, and I'm guessing it didn't take them 3 tries to get into college. Ross showed very little ball skill at UT, and very little period besides track speed.
 
by the time we pick in round 2 i believe this club is going to have some serious decisions to make because of the guys available at that pick

drew stanton
kevin kolb
earl everett
rufus alexander
and so on

this club is gonna have to decide which side of the ball to target and then make a decision on the position...either way i see a lot of arguements on this board as to the direction they should go and which way they shouldn't go

my personal choice here is ryan kalil...o-line is too much a need for this team and with flanagan's inability to stay healthy...mckinney being a huge ?...and drew hodgdon not really panning out the way we had hoped a young center to start for the next 8 years would go a long way to improving this o-line
 
I think Merriwether would be a better fit for what this team needs unless we go FS with the 8 spot. I don't mind the Ross selection if there's a few others still available in the second round. Kalil predominately comes to mind. He's also a good punt returner and that'll help his stock a bit.

I'm just hoping we go OL with ONE of the first or second round picks. What would anyone elses feelings about LEvi Brown at the 8 and if Kalil somehow falls to us at our second pick?....I think i'd wet myself.

Eh, he wasn't THAT bad, except for when Teddy Ginn did him dirty at the end of the 1st half for a TD this past year. Against Rice & North Texas though, he was deion Sanders!

Rice has Dillard, and I didn't get to watch that game, but I don't really think Dillard had a bad game all year, including UT.

I want someone like Josh Wilson, Hughes, or especially Christ Houston in the second round if we are look at CB's.

Wow, thats somewhat harsh. He won the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back and he isnt any better than a third rounder or possible second day pic. Well he will be gone by the mid second at the latest rather you like him or not. Very little ball skills, I didnt know that 6 interceptions, 19 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fuble recoveries were poor ball skills. And why would he return 76 punts over his career if his ball skills are so poor.

He isnt exactly small either 6'0 192 is good size for a cornerback.

Aaron Ross comes from a program with a great history of producing defensive backs and was taught by a coach who has an amazing track record with DBs as well.

He isnt perfect, and does take some chances and gets burned for them, but he also makes plays. You have to have confidence in your abilities to be a successful DB and he certainly does.

He would be a solid pickup, paired with a FS in one form or another our defense wont not only be stout it will be able to force turnovers..... short fields.... more points. :doot:

Leading the Big 12 in interceptions isnt enough? He is a good player that was in a flawed defensive scheme. UT played a bunch of man coverage without any saftey help, crowding the line of scrimmage against some very good passing offenses, despite being #1 against the run. I think that he would do pretty well as our CB#2 or nickle back, can make a lot of plays and is a very good tackler. Would be a good pick in the 2nd round, depending on who else is on the board.

Well, I'll admit, that is the first decent argument presented on his behalf. Punt return has nothing to do with ball skill, it is a running instinct. He isn't even the best DB on his team, and his team sucked against the pass. Griffin is barely a second round talent, and is noticably better all around than Ross. Ross is also 26 I believe. He has little experience and has not done that well on the field for what his ability should lead to. Granted, he didn't play as poorly as McCauley, but he didn't play well either. At the end of last year, I was fairly high on him and thought he could go mid second round. After actually watching his tape, and reviewing his skill set, I don't believe he is good enough to go where we are projecting him for. He is a fast cat and can return some punts, but I can find those guys late or UDFAs. I don't need another nickle CB, we have Faggins for that. We need a #1 CB that will allow Daunta to play the position he is actualy fit for that is #2 CB.

I agree with this...Samuels has been tagged and the Bottom line with Clements is, that we won't be able to get into a bidding war with him. We just don't have the cap room. I'd be much happier if Aaron Ross was off the board at thirty nine, than if he was still an options. I like several of the young coners and FS. Ross isn't one of them. I might have my expectations too high, but if you look at where the Texas DE's are projected to go and where the Junior DT was projected to go....that combined with Texas' 119th division 1 ranked pass defense...I think I'd be much happier if we missed on Ross. He's a good guy. He has the numbers...but my draft mojo is telling me danger Will Robinson on the guy. I could be wrong...just my hunch. I wouldn't mind Terrel Brown on day two as a prospect if they do take Laron Landry with the eight.
 
Rep your way YTF. I'm a slow reader and an even worse typer. You said it much more eloquintly than I could have writen it. I'm with you though. I wouldn't be at all shocked if Ross is still on the board at the start of day two. If you and I can see this stuff and we're amatuers, I'm sure the pro scout guys have it disected Ross the same way. A lot of folks have Troy Simth and all of his hardware going day one. I'll believe that one when I see it also.
 
He may not even be available in the 2nd round due to his excellent senior bowl week. I remember one play in particular (Practice, not game) where Ross had just a beautiful jam on Florida WR Dallas Baker.
 
CB is a position that flies off the board during the draft.

Aaron Ross will likely not fall out of the 2nd round and most certainly not be anywhere near day 2.

My argument here wasn't actaully the returning of punts, but the actual fielding/ catching of the punts. Coachs will not put somebody with poor ball skills back to field a punt.

As another poster pointed out UT played alot of press coverage, getting everyone closer to the line, one reason they had the #2 run defense, but when you play with fire that much you will get burned.

I dont disagree with the fact that he has flaws, but I think something that gets overlooked in evaluating football players at this time(combine time) is their actual ability to make plays.

The way I see it is, coaches want productivity "playmakers" if you will. Someone who with one play can turn a game around. An example would be the Alamo Bowl game against Iowa, where he got out run on a play and gave up a td. How does he respond? He makes a game changing interception in the endzone.... leaving his man to make a play on the ball which would have landed right in the hands of Tates reciever. Or the Nebraska game.


You cant look at team ranking such as pass defense to evaluate a prospect. There are 10 other guys on the field that are also responsible for helping out.

Just want to point out, that I actaully really like both Aaron Ross and M. Griffin..... I dont think we should reach for them but I think depending on how the first round goes either one would fill a need and would be a good pick in the 2nd.

I also enjoy discussing these issues with someone who has an idea of what they are talking about. Keep up the good work YTF.:shades:
