It's the offseason, and any other time these little bits of information would hardly be worth noting. I figured I'd might as well give us something else to banter back and forth about.

Nick Schenck, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans QB David Carr has benefited from the addition of CB Phillip Buchanon. While practicing against Buchanon during the team's offseason workouts, Carr had to pay extra attention not to telegraph his passes by looking down his target, and receivers were forced to run crisper routes. "Buchanon, that guy, we're going to have to pick on him a little bit," Carr said after one workout. "He has a little fun with our receivers. He has a lot of talent, though. He's definitely a guy you have to be aware of because he'll take some chances just like all corners do."

Here's a little bit of it.
Considering the emphasis teams place on “shut-down” corners, the Texans’ trade for Buchanon ultimately could be the steal of the off-season. The final verdict will arrive after the season, but initial judgments appear favorable.

Upon arriving in Houston for the team’s coaching sessions, Buchanon expressed a singular goal, and one that had nothing to do with any personal agendas.

“I came here to do one thing,” Buchanon said, “and that’s to help us win.”

He then proceeded to show how he was going to accomplish his objective. Lined up against the Texans’ first-team offense on many occasions, Buchanon showed his instincts and athleticism by jumping in front of out routes and breaking up deep balls with a swagger reminiscent of Deion Sanders in his prime.

The added intensity benefited the offense. Quarterback David Carr had to pay extra attention not to telegraph his passes by looking down his target, and receivers were forced to run crisper routes. It was a challenge Carr welcomed, not unlike when he faced the previous number 31 in practices last season.

“Buchanon, that guy, we’re going to have to pick on him a little bit,” Carr said after one workout. “He has a little fun with our receivers. He has a lot of talent, though. He’s definitely a guy you have to be aware of because he’ll take some chances just like all corners do. He’s not any different than Aaron (Glenn), the other 31 that used to run around here. So you have to be aware of him.”

interesting that he mentions how buch will take chances.

It seemed, around the middle of last season, that our defense was turning into one dedicated to the turnover. We were making interceptions left and right and it seemed like that is the way our defense was built to work.

Was that really the case? or were we just imagining things?

I dunno.. but if we are a defense built around causing turnovers.. then Buch may fit in very well here.
 
One of my favorite parts of the article was towards the end when DRob mentions that he, Petey, and Phil are already pretty competitive with one another. It mentions Buchanon having 4 INTs returns for TDs, and DRob says something about having some cathing up to do. Should definately make for a fun defense to watch.
 
its strange how this guy dropped under the radar in Oakland, when he came out he was considered an elite talent from Miami and dangerous returner. sounds like he is focused and adjusting well with the Texans scheme & getting along with teamates. maybe for a change we should salute the coaching staff and give them some credit for setting up a positive working environment allowing talented players like Buchanon to thrive :homer:
 
Hmm... not sure if he dropped under the fans radar in Oakland. If I recall correctly, that was what they were saying one of PB's weaknesses was going for the big play often and getting burned. Of course, it helps if you have some help to back you up if you do try for that big play and may not have been the correct fit there.

Sounds like he is here... and hopefully it's not just a "spin" making the news.
 
I am glad we got Buchannon. Other than DRob and Peek, this team lacked play makers on defense and now we have 3 proven ones. I won't salute to any acquisition until mid season though. I do see alot more promise in this one compared to any of the others we made before.because Hoke is a good CB coach and I think the new experience will benefit PBUCH.

hey, i'm excited to see peek on the field, but i think calling a guy with 15 solo tackles and 2 sacks a "proven playmaker" is a bit much.

Aaron Glenn had 5 interceptions in '04. Considering the lack of pressure put on opposing QBs, thats a pretty solid number. Showtime has 11 interceptions over his 3 year career, as opposed to Glenn's 11 interceptions the past three seasons with the Texans. I think that if Showtime can give the Texans what Glenn did over the past 3 years, they'd be satisfied. That Showtime is 8 years younger and makes $3 million less than Glenn did is all the better.

hey, if he was such a proven playmaker he would've played more. i'm not arguing over his potential, just hard to call him proven, thats all. perhaps i shouldnt be so picky over the specific wording.
 
I meant proven as far as on our team. Proven was used rather loosely though but when Peek has been in the game he has made plays happen which is why I said proven because he has proven he could make plays.
 
Look, No one knows if Peek will be a playmaker when he starts. He certainly has shown that he CAN make plays, but you have to put a guy in as a starter and give him a full game to play through before he is a "playmaker"
 
I personally think PBuc may have been labeled a certain way in Oakland but with Hoke as our CB coach, and playing next to DRob, providing competition can only make this club better. Is it so wrong, to see the people that we currently have on the field, if they can play upto expectation, be one of the top 5 secondaries in the league, especially if we can improve on the pass rush to put the opposing QB's into a position to possibally want to get rid of the ball quicker than they want to.

:thumbup Man, that's music to my ears. Deion could completely shutdown his half of the field, and offenses would gameplan around where he would be at a given time.

Having a one-two punch of Buchanan and Robinson could give us a D that scares other teams, especially if we put any pressure on the QB (which I've got a feeling we'll see more of that this season than we ever have before).

I want to see a turnover ratio in our favor this year. This statistic, along with average starting field position, are extremely important to building a winning franchise.

I'm stoked! I can't wait to see PB play!
 
We HAVE to have great corners... so PBuc is a great choice for four reasons;

One, we want to be competitive in this division and we play pass happy Manning twice a year.

Two, I think we can afford to have PB return punts to address scoring or improving field position anyway we can.

Three, both corners will benefit because Manning can not avoid trouble by throwing to any particular side of the field.

And four, with the collective bargaining agreement pending, we don't have to worry about signing 2nd and 3 round draft choices to improve because Buchanan's is ours right now!

Hats off to the front office and the coaches that had input on getting PBuc! :)
 
another thing to add is faggins will be pushing buchanon to play harder. i don't know who played behind him in oakland, but that may have played a role in his sometimes lackluster play he showed with oakland.

Ditto! I am the only one at the FILO homestead that believes in PBuch. The men here think he is trouble, but I think since he is getting some respect, has some positive backing and comraderie (AJ) and discipline....he is going to make us VERY proud. I hope you are reading these boards PBuch, because this girl thinks you are going be hella good for the Texans! :highfive:
 
I'm just going to go out on a limb here...I guess we can now let P Buch go for a bag of Brazilian nuts and a cup of coffee. At least the coffee would have a harder kick than Buchanon can hit!! I'm here in Okinawa, Japan and I can't stand this dude. I have a hard time trying to defend my squad and P Buch ain't making my life any easier!!
