5th Round pick (1B) DJ Reader DT Clemson

If there are a bunch of teams interested in him I don’t understand why they wouldn’t tag and trade him to get an extra pick or 2
 
Reader is going to want big money to stay in Houston.....some are saying DE money at his DT position. Maybe he's just pricing his services out of the Texans range.

I'd let him walk b/c I think the Texans could get 2 better answers for the DL for what could be the price of one Reader. I'd sign DE, Robert Quinn (29 years old) to a nice contract. Sportrac has his value at roughly 11.8M annually. This is a livable deal. I'd sign DT, Ndamukong Suh (33 years old) to a 2 year deal. Sportrac hasn't included a Market Value at this time but I think a 2 year deal at 8 to 8.5M annually probably lands him.

So give me a front that features Quinn, Suh, Watt and I’ll take that front for 2020 and 2021.

Then draft heavily in the secondary.
 
I wonder if the Texans even tried to negotiate with Reader in the off season before or during the 2019 season. I like the way Reader has progressed but he isn't enough of a difference maker on the overall success of the defense to warrant top DL money. If I am an opposing team I am not game planning about DJ Reader. Hell I don't think anyone, other than maybe JJ Watt, on the current defense is worth top 5 money at their position.

11-13Ms for the anchor of the run defense is a deal especially when you just gave Mercilus a 11M annual contract gurantee to be JAG. It would have been easier to replace Mercilus than to replace DJ.

Except those two players prices that you cited would be way, way higher than the price of one Reader.

Reader - 53/4 - 13.25 million per year

Quinn - 11.8 million, Suh - 8.5 million - 20.3 million per year

And then there's the tiny detail of Quinn by himself was more expensive than Reader anyways (5 years 70 million with Chicago, 14 million per year)

Plus Suh sucks now anyways, which is why he's a FA and cheap.

Quinn would have a far bigger impact than Reader in my book. I'm guessing his impact with the Bears defense will be a big one.

I don't believe Suh has been signed at this time so his 8.5M was last seasons number. I think Suh is lucky to get a 1-2 year deal averaging 3-3.5M per season plus bonuses with 1 year guaranteed.

Reader got less than what he was hoping for but 13.5M per season isn't bad. Based on my original projection (before FA) I may only come in at 1M more when the smoke settles......not the numbers you feel so proud to point out. Not to mention my projection was done early rather than an I told you so after the fact.

As with most things, it's usually several reasons. Losing DJ Reader is one reason, but not the only reason.

The other big reason no one is really talking about is the poor tackling by the secondary. We were spoiled when we had corners like JJo and KJax (even KJo when he played). Those are three corners that are extremely good at tackling. Roby, Conley, Gaines, Hargraeves are horrible!

Whatever the reason(s), just pointing out that having DJ didn’t make much difference.

I think Mercilus decline and the loss of Clowney on the other side are contributing factors , then there's McKinney being out for most of the year. He's a total liability in pass defense but a really good run plugging ILB.
Take Reader away too and you have a recipe for what we saw ....

I would also put Blackson in there. I have no clue why the Texans cut him? If they wanted the cap space, I would have went with letting Dunn go instead. And Jacob Martin is a liability against the run.

McKinney was present and Playing for Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s rookie debut this year...and JK Dobbins’. He didn’t seem to make a difference in either.

I remember saying players play. Coaches & players play to win. No way you can get a whole team to tank to draft a QB or whatever.

I was told it’s not the players who tank, but the front office that puts them in a bad position to win.

But what reason would we have to tank?
