Is 40 now the new 30?

I'm old fashioned, & slow to change. I know the rules have evolved to benefit the passing game & of course, coaches are going to take advantage of every advantage they're given.

But 40 attempts per game.... I cringe when I see a team threw the ball that much (remember, I'm old fashioned) but now, even the new guys are throwing the ball 40 times a game...

Bortles threw the ball 37 times today

Glennon threw it 42 times today

I can't remember who, but the last couple of weeks there were other young QBs with about 40 or so atts as well.

All I'm saying, is Wow.

Not sure what the other numbers were - but both of those teams were playing from behind for most of their games.

The running game situations in both Jacksonville and Tampa are, lets say, less than ideal as well.

I watched the Bucs game and that is what happens when you can't run the ball. The Bucs run blocking is horrid. Glennon on the other hand was money yesterday.

Lovie Smith seriously needs to let others make the decisions on choosing his starting QBs. Without McCown's injury the Bucs would easily be 0-4 right now.

I don't know how "now centric" the Bucs can be though. McCown is obviously a placeholder QB at 35 years old, and despite some strong performances from Glennon they are looking at a messy situation in other areas. The question is - how damaging do you think it could be to Glennon's progression to be in a situation where he has to throw 35+ passes a game to claw his team back?

But either way I agree - the number of pass attempts is directly correlated to the quality of the running game/position in the game as much as changes in the game. In the more run-able offence in Dallas Romo attempted 29 passes, whilst Brees had 41 attempts (during chasing the game from start to finish).

The only real exception I could see from yesterday was the NYG game where Eli threw 39 times whilst the Giants posted 45 points (although 14 of those were unanswered in the 4th quarter - so it wasn't that lopsided until later on in the game).

Been telling you for a while now that 4000 yards doesn't mean jack. 5000 is the new 4000. Schaub got sorta close once.

I never thought 4000 yards was anything in & of itself. To do it "consistently" over a 4~5 year period the way Schaub did, that was special. To do it consistently over a 4~5 year period on a winning team the way Aaron Rodgers & Drew Brees has, that was special.

Now, right... not a big deal that Andrew Luck will probably do it for three years straight.

There's no appreciable difference in the rules from Schaub's best year to Luck's current years. The big rules changes are the PI, the defenseless receiver crap, and most hits on QBs being disallowed, as well as the increase in calling defensive holding on DL. All of that contributed to Schaub's numbers. 4000 yards is just not special, really at any point in the last 10 years, to be honest. It's like hitting a certain completion percentage. It's now a minimum benchmark for QBs.

I know you love to hate on Luck (I do too, since he's a Colt), but the guy is light years ahead of anything Schaub ever did, already in only his 3rd year. He's performing better than his contemporaries playing under the same ruleset as well.

Right. I try not to say anything good about Luck. He is the enemy & imo hasn't done anything to deserve the kind of respect a Brady, Manning, or Brees would even though they are the enemy.


I do appreciate his football savy & determination to win. I think that's what sets him apart from the other young'ns out there. & Schaub never had that desire to win.

Still... hate Luck.
