2nd Round Pick

Uncle Rico

Ur apology should be as loud as Ur disrespect was
Tons of needs obviously.

Would it be too much of a reach to pick up the best CB available, and slide Joseph to FS?

In my fantasy scenario the team could get a MLB like Dansby in FA and a better RT. Quisenverry goes to LG. Then pick up some pass rushers and fill out depth.

Back to reality, maybe the coffee has me too wired up.

It all depends on where we go in the 1st round. There will be great players available at #33 at DE, OLB, CB, and OT. There will also be QB's available if we don't take one in 1st round.

I think, if we go QB we will probably either go RT, OLB or NT here - with NT maybe even the biggest need now that Crennel seems to be our DC.

Here are some players I´d look at:

OLB: Scott Crichton (Oregon), Kyle van Noy (BYU)
DT: Anthony Johnson (LSU),
OT: Antonio Richardson (Ten), Zack Martin (ND)

I like these players a lot but I am pretty sure that there will be some guys who are projected to be 1st round picks that slide for no particular reason to the late 20's or the 2nd. If Crennel is going to be running the defense I would not be surprised if we drafted or traded up a couple of spots for Louis Nix III if he is still available. Another option would be if one of the top OLB's is available. Out of your pics I really like Van Noy. One of the good things about Crennel is that he was the HC at Kansas City when Poe and Houston were picked. I would bet he had a good deal of input on those picks. IMO I think that we will address the RT spot during free agency. That being said there also might be a complete stud who is available that is not a top need position but is just too good to pass up.

Assuming we take Bridgewater in the 1st round, I see 3 options in the 2nd.

1. Trade down for an extra 4th round pick. We've got lots of holes and need all the picks we can get.
2. CB, someone like Justin Gilbert, Bradley Roby, or Jason Verrett. We've got to prepare for the future when JJo leaves.
3. DE, someone like Stephon Tuitt, Kelcy Quarles, or RaShede Hageman. Antonio Smith is likely gone.

A good ILB can be found in the 3rd-6th rounds, and a good OT can be found in the 3rd or 4th rounds. We've got to look for value in this draft with so many holes to fill.

2A. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, TE, WSU;.... 2B. Bradley Roby, CB OSU..... 2C. Aaron Donald, DE, PITT

I would be fine with trading down and picking up an extra 4th if there are several top players still on the board but if there is a guy I covet in a high round I move up a couple of spots to get him and give up the 3rd day pick every time. I would rather have a guy that I project as a day one starter than roll the dice on a guy in the 4th. You could get an Asante Samuel but it is much more probable you will get a backup.

I don`t know if I agree. History shows, that everyone past the 2nd or maybe the 3d round is at best a 50 50 chance to really contribute - when you get to the 5th this chance is probably a lot less for most positions.

I don`t think we have that many holes - rather a few really glaring ones. QB, RT and NT being the most obvious, with OLB and ILB close behind, and perhaps DE and G as well. We could also use a TE.

Now, we will have some money to spend in FA. So I fully expect to get at least 2 of these holes fixed via FA. So let`s say we get a RT and NT via free agency and a QB with the first pick. I´d rather have a stud OLB, a good ILB and a mediocre DE than a good OLB, a mediocre DE, a mediocre ILB and a mediocre G.

You've got me thinking about how Rick should proceed. I believe either TB or Bortles will be 1-1. Unless they can trade down with Cleveland. If that happens Johnny Football will be the pick at #4.

In FA you can sign Cody for cheap and spend large FA $$$$ on Orakpo. You get that $$$$ by cutting Schaub/Mitchell/Manning/OD.

Rd.2 LaMarcus Joyner
Rd. 3 Morgan Moses
Rd.4 Taylor Hart
Rd.5 Jaylen Watkins
Rd. 5 Kapri BiBBs
Rd.6 Max Bullough
Rd.7 Jordan Najvar

This fixes both OL/DL, LB's and gives the Texans my favorite DB Joyner is the perfect S that and drop down and play the slot. He also is a vey good blitzer. Watkins providess depth and is an upgrade over McCain/Harris. Bibbs is my sleeper RB. Bullough is a smart tough ILB. Better than anything not named Cushing on the current roster.

Najvar is a favorite of mine. Great blocker with suprising speed above avg hands. A better blocking version of Griffin.

My view is worth nothing but I would like to see ASJ taken in the 2nd.
We have been lacking in the red zone for too long and I think he would be a big help.

Realistic, I think we could only get Austin Jenkins in the 2nd though.

is it just me or does it seems this years draft is deeper and better than pervious years?obviously still a lot of analysis to come so things could change but so far so good

I agree with you on the draft picks. You can get a good G, C, K, and P in the later rounds but IMO after the 2nd round the chances of getting a quality starter at all other positions decreases significantly. That is why I would give up a third day pick or two in order to move up a couple of spots if there is a guy who we project as a day one starter available in the late 20's. I think that if you come out of a draft with 3 guys who are going to end up being quality starters, excluding kickers and punters, you have had a very good draft.

I personally think we have a lot of holes to fill. We need a starting QB, RT, OLB, NT, and some strong competition for Bullock. I am hoping that we move Reed to ILB. He is just not putting enough pressure on the QB and we need a guy next to Cushing who has his skill set. As far as depth we need a NT, ILB, OLB, CB, and S at the very least. If we part ways with Owen Daniels, Antionio Smith, and Daniel Manning we will have to address those positions. I am comfortable with Crick as long adds some strength and weight to fit Rac's scheme as well as Graham and Griffin, but if Manning goes we need to get a starting caliber player to compete with Swearinger and Keo IMO.

As far as FA I am hoping that we get 2 starters and depth. If we get one of the OT's (Monroe, Veldheer, Oher) and Orakpo I would be surprised but ecstatic.

A good question that I have not seen a number for is exactly how much cap space would we save if we part ways with Wade Smith, Owen Daniels, Matt Schaub, Daniel Manning, and Antonio Smith.

I think this years draft lacks the elite level talent but it's very deep in good quality talent. There will be good players to be had down in the 5th and 6th rounds. I think this benefits the Texans, because we have so many holes we can afford to go BPA in the later rounds and select the quality talent that falls every year for inexplicable reasons.

If you go Teddy B in round 1, then I wouldnt mind seeing a TE in round 2. I want him to have a more reliable weapon in the passing game.

If you go Clowney in round 1, then I wouldnt mind seeing Tajh Boyd in round 2. As long as Boyd has the smarts then we could rekindle the Boyd/Hopkins connection.

I also think a pass rusher should be high on our list. Not happy with our current guys.

Totally agree w/ you. After watching these Texans drafts for so many years and looking back at them years later I notice we fail about 96% more than we succeed.

I've damn near given up hope on Texans' drafts, but I still come to areas like this and talk draft 5 months in advance.

I've come to the conclusion if we can get 3 (that's it) KEY contributors I am totally fine with it. If we have to trade up with our 3rd round pick and give up a 4,4,5,6 I don't care. I'm so tired of guys like Keo, Harris, Kevin Walter, McCain, etc. having extended playing for many seasons. Just 3 per and I can live.

First round pick should be a lock every year too unless you're a terrible franchise, so really I'm only asking to nail 2 draft picks.

You may not believe me, but I swear I posted what I said before I read further down what you said. It looks like I'm copying you quite a bit, but I truthfully didn't read what you said when I posted. I had only read up to the point where I quoted you.

This is my draft philosophy also.

But this yr I expect them to hit on atleast 4 players. Because a 2nd rd pick is like a 1st, 3rd like a 2nd, 4th, like a 3rd. If it is in the middle of the 4th and there's value on the board, (There will be) I hope Rick uses a 5th/6th to trade up and add a 5th player.

Somebody like Bipps/Belue/Watkins etc will be there in the middle of the 4th. After that they should draft talented but troubled guys (Lyerla, Lynch) or injured but talented guys (Spencer Long/Exum) etc...

We should be able to find at least 4 starters i agree.
QB, RT, TE, NT, ILB, DE. will all need possibly new starters, mainly from the draft.
Ideally we find 2 or 3 cheap FA to fill some of these roles

Valid point. Picking at 1 is better than picking at 21 for later rounds.

We've still flopped pretty badly in the past with picks in the low teens though.

See 2011 (Brooks Reed and Brandon Harris both in 2nd round)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Texans_draft_history

I really like the injured strategy, that's what IR is for right?

Yep, that's what IR is for and if you get lucky and they get and stay healthy you get a stud player for chear. I would spend a 5th on Exum for instance.

I didn't. Have a problem with harris, but I thought reed was a reach with houston still on the board. This year, I see a lot of talented guy in the 2nd. The trench guys will like Tiny Richardson, maybe mike same, kelce quarles, louis nix to name a few. A guy I really like from the skill spot is Kyle Fuller (Va Tech) cb.

I expect with a better coaching staff will come better talent evaluation and thus we'll start having better drafts, and quit wasting mid round picks on project players.

Hope your right. This thread never really took off like I thought it might. I kind of wanted to see what everyone thought about more than just the first round where we all plant a flag on a QB or a Clowney and call everyone else idiots.

What do yall think of Austin Seferian-Jenkins as our 2-1? We would obviously cut OD and save 4.5 mill this year on him. Judging from the 3 picks to start the 2nd round he would cost us a little under 1 mill for the first year for a total savings of 3.5 mill to address other needs.

I'm not impressed with Ryan Griffin for the record. I also don't think we can afford to draft a CB with our other glaring needs, plus if we ever address CB in the draft I'd prefer to do it in round 1, outside of that is just a super gamble that generally ends with walking away from the table with empty pockets.

If we go with a QB first overall, I think ASJ is a very nice potential pick at #33. I am assuming O'Brien will want to add in the the two-TE sets to our offense as at least a wrinkle, and ASJ could be a weapon on this offense for years to come. I am not a fan of Griffin either, and I think OD is a cap casualty, so TE is a need.

Right now assuming we take a QB first, ASJ would be my favorite pick in the second. I also really like Tuitt and Murphy like many others here, but I am not too confident either will make it out of the first once its all said and done.

I doubt it. Lots of players eligible for the draft & the variables involved with trying to "guess" who is going to be available where, I doubt most coaching staffs are as involved once you get past the third round or so... maybe 4th.

Kubiak & crew generally did pretty good rounds 1-3.

The GM though, he & his scouts should be well versed on all the available players. Their primary job is talent evaluation. They're the key to hitting on 4th-UDFAs.

Those guys are still going to be here.

Minus Watt (who I think was all Phillips) I personally think Kubiak and Co. suck at the draft, all rounds

I obviously like Brown, but I'm still bitter about the pick cause the Ravens traded up to draft Flacco with our pick.
