It’s never this simple. The risk with Stroud is that he tops out as a top 12-15 QB, and you have to pay him Lamar Jackson money yet he isn’t quite good enough to win playoff games. That type of mistake can end up taking 10 years to work through.
 
If the Browns had sucked like they were supposed to last year the second pick would be 5-8. If you wait till 12 for a QB someone will jump in front of you..If they go DE 1.2 I expect them to move up to 6-8 if a QB is available

In baseball, if you strikeout, you want to strikeout swinging.

I'd rather see my team trying and take chances, rather than playing it safe and hope you get lucky.

Nick is risking his job if they take Anderson and Titans trade up and take Stroud in which he turns out to be really good.

Cal ain't having it.

Texans should really consider Wilson with the second pick on a trade up to 5,6,8 etc if they considered Wilson as a potential 2 overall.

I disagree. I don't think you can look past a 5 year window when make draft decisions in the 1st round (equal to the 5 years of rookie contract control). Stroud and Young are the only 2 QBs in this draft that could be better than average starters for the majority of those 5 year deals. That doesn't mean Stroud should be the pick (though I think he should be), but his possible value relative to a 2nd contract in 6-8 years is not relevant.
 
Welp. Here’s where my head is folks. Number one I have to trust the powers that be, who do this for a living and have actually scouted, interviewed and graded the prospects. Additionally, I am more concerned about building a team for the next 6 to 8 years vs. next year. I don’t need a QB this year to continue to support a team that is rebuilding. I do expect the team to be ready to be competitive by 2024. It would be risky to pass on a QB this year but not impossible to recover from, especially with two number one’s next year. If we kinda suck again, we should be in a similar situation next year to be able to get a QB. That being said. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus top QB this year. Knowing this. I‘m good with Will Anderson at 2. If available, Levis or Richardson at 12 otherwise bpa or if available, Hooker 33. I won’t hate Stroud at two. Just my 2 Pennie’s. Go Texans.
 
Was listening to ESPN 9.75 (Gods I miss the Blitz). They pointed out how Cal and the Texan have been doing a PR blitz for the past year to try and resuscitate the flagging fanbase. Not getting a franchise QB completely kills that effort, especially with casual fans. Cal putting pressure on Nick to make a move.

All I'm saying is that you don't force the pick. If you've got a QB graded as the highest guy on your board when your pick comes up, then you take him. If there's a guy you want and you don't think they'll get to your pick, then you trade up to get him.

But you don't draft a QB with your top 3 pick just because you need a QB.

So, if the Seahawks had traded up to draft Wilson early in the first round, they would have been reaching?

Looks like he wasn't rated highly on any of the 32 boards, not to mention the draft experts.

You just have to hope that your scouting department and your football guys can evaluate talent.

The Bears got it wrong with Trubisky.
On the other hand, a number of teams missed out on Mahomes and Watson for one reason or another.
At the end of the day, you still have to take a shot.
There's no guarantee but both Young and Stroud had shown that they are good prospects, though not perfect.
Mahomes wasn't a perfect prospect and neither was Watson.
Josh Allen wasn't (he was drafted no. 7, behind Mayfield and Darnold). Lamar Jackson lasted until no. 32.

We know the fate of these players beforehand? How you know what he’s going to top off at?

I was for trading down or going D with 1.2 but with more reflection, just get a QB. No guarantees of course but what guarantee will we have a low enough pick next year to get a tier one QB? We have a very narrow window whereby we can stock up with some great round one picks, so just pick.

There are no guarantees, Vegas has the Texans tied with the worst record in the league. 5.5 so betting odds say they won't even need to make a trade to draft a top QB in 2024.

You're misinterpreting the analogy. It's not swing no matter what. It's IF you're going to strikeout, you want to strikeout swinging.

In 3 seasons from now, which do you prefer?
- We take Stroud, he sucks, so we're back to looking for a QB.
- We don't take Stroud, or any QB, and we're still looking for a QB.

Which do you prefer? IMO, I prefer taking Stroud... at least we tried.
 
I have no clue who ol Slick Nick is gonna pick, but my money is on him trading back ONE of those two picks for more draft capital.
in the Texans case more picks the better right now

Of course not, that’s why it said it’s a risk. A lot of people think Stroud’s potential is limited due to his struggles under pressure. It’s hard (but not impossible) to improve that.
It’s just simply one thing that goes in his ‘cons’ column when trying to make a decision.

It just amazes me every year how pissed people get learning of the pick on the nets 90 seconds before it’s announced on TV. Hilarious and sad at the same time. It’s seriously the dumbest ******* thing I’ve ever heard of.
