2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

I hope Carr goes to the Colts. Not only are they the most likely to jump to #1 and take a legit franchise changer, but they will again take a vet that will mire them in mediocrity for a few years.

As far as the Texans hell no. You want a winning QB right? Tell me what Carr has done to make anyone think he can take this team to a SB? He’s a decent mid level starter but he has never been able to elevate his team beyond it’s talent level.

I’m all about Mr Young or as a backup…Mr Stroud. I’d rather roll the dice and see if I can roll a 7 rather than the middle of the packness of Mr Carr.
lol...I'd gladly send Young to Indy, and bring Carr to Houston. That way, it will benefit Houston every time Young goes on IR.

If the Texans want Young, they should strategically leak interest in Anderson in order to make Chicago reluctant to trade out of 1.1.

I’m not gonna lie, I like the idea of Carr…and like somebody once said, give him #8 and everyone who has the old Carr jerseys can break ‘em out and get some use out of them. Win win all the way around! :shades:
I want no part of Carr. He's another Cousins. Puts up stats but wilts when the lights get bright and the stage gets big.

Texans need to start talking about how good they feel about Mills & adding veteran QBs & about how imprudent it would be to add a rookie QB to this roster.

Nobody is going to contact the Texans if they think the Texans are bent on drafting a QB.

I'm thinking if someone trades for the #1 pick, they'll most likely take a QB and if it happens to be the guy NC/DR want, then they should take Anderson. Should.
I wouldn't like to think they would "settle" for next best QB although Young or Stroud at #2 wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
Arizona could end up with Anderson.

The Bears will stay pat if the Texans sign Carr, then proceed to show interest/meet with Anderson a few times leading up to the draft. Nick can pick whatever QB his heart desires. I personally want him to stay away from Young and Stroud and go with either Hooker or Heaner on the second round.

I like the thought, but Hooker I would try to get in the 3rd, and Haener no sooner than the 4th, if not the 5th. I'm looking at Tune or Haener in the 5th, Duggan in the 6th, or Bagent in the 7th.

How many under six foot QBs have been given the chance? Until recently teams wouldn’t even look at small QBs.

I'm not going to be the 1st to make this bet and it's not just Young's height, it's his frame. He's a really small dude.

If you think he's the unicorn then you would be willing to risk your career on him then you're a much bigger risk taker than I am.

Teams also saw Tua complain about not being able to see over the line of scrimmage. Tua is listed as 6'-1" now, but was measured at 6'-0" at the combine. If Tua has problems seeing over the LOS, how is a 5'-10" QB going to handle it? Tua probably doesn't have much time left in the NFL because of his injuries. We'll have to wait and see how Tiny Tim's size will relate to injuries.

I'm a Bryce Young man in the same way I was pounding the table for DeMeco Ryans. You guys and your underwear Olympics. I don't give two sheets about their underwear. They can wear underoos for all I care. Show me how he plays in full gear on Saturdays.

Can he play at a high level? Yes! 100% sold to the 59 year old balding white man in the back for a 1.2 first-round draft pick.

Y'all want to make another JJ Watt mistake. Half of y'all booed a first ballot HOF'er. So, let's not pretend y'all have an ounce of knowledge about the future of this prospect any more than an ideally sized heavier boned QB with a cannon for an arm. Y'all would be the folks all over JaMarcus Russel like flys on stink because he looks good in underwear!

I really don't care who they draft, as long as it works. I don't care if Slowik says Mills is the perfect answer for his system and they don't draft a QB until later in the draft. This team has so many holes that they need to draft BPA at every position. Every QB in this draft has warts.
I just want to see a competitive football team and competent coaching.

Correct, but many on here know how to read and choose to read football stuff from a historical perspective.

You obviously aren't one of those guys. BTW, Flutie wasn't a bad QB.

if only the draft could fall this way, did a round by round trade down until I saw time to move, funny as hell, NFL Mock Database, something ain't right

I'll wait until after Slowik decides what he thinks of Mills. Mills isn't devoid of talent. Mills is fairly mobile and can be accurate.

I’d say Mills going into year 3 should be in prime position to compete for a bridge QB type position.

I’d like to see the Texans add a QB like Jacoby Brissett who wont break the bank… but wont completely flop and may have a Geno Smith season in him under the right conditions. Brissett certainly played better than WD40 last season.

Do they actually take photos? I've never seen any. A photo of Young would be nice to go along with his measurements.

You don't remember the old Brady combine physique photo?

NFL.com proposes tempting trade for Texans to take Bryce Young No. 1 overall
February 14, 2023 9:05 am CT

Trading 2023 draft capital to move up to No. 1 overall does not seem appealing to the Houston Texans.

Thanks to their 32-31 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18 at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the Chicago Bears losing to the Minnesota Vikings, Houston didn’t secure possession of the top pick in April’s draft. Instead the Bears have the No. 1 overall pick, and with a quarterback firmly in place with Justin Fields, they have the possibility to be sellers, especially with four quarterback-needy teams in the top-10.

According to Chad Reuter from NFL.com, the Texans do make a deal with the Bears to take Bryce Young with the first pick overall, and it does not involve a complete complement of 2023 picks.
The Texans get their guy with the No. 1 overall pick, swapping spots with the Bears to land Young. Houston sends two picks from [2022 offseason trade with the Cleveland Browns] (Round 3, 2023; Round 1, 2024) and get a 2023 fifth-rounder back from the Bears to balance the deal. Young’s lack of size (6-foot, 194 pounds) may be an issue for some, but his poise, leadership, athleticism and underappreciated throwing velocity give him a chance to be great.
Theoretically the Browns’ 2024 first-rounder is a firepower piece anyway. The Texans should be rounding the corner as a contender going into that draft. Who knows what the draft landscape will look like and where the Browns’ pick will actually land, especially since they seem to have upgraded at quarterback?

Dealing the pick to the Bears ensures the Texans get their guy and they get to use the No. 12 overall pick to grab a receiver, pass rusher, or cornerback. While the Texans won’t have twin third-rounders, they would have an extra fifth-round pick to build draft packages to take specific players, which has been a staple of Houston’s draft philosophy under general manager Nick Caserio.

Give up all of that for a Unicorn?

Too much! I sure as hope we don’t trade up to 1

Marginally acceptable, but NO. After the combine, if Slowik is sure Young is their guy, may need to reconsider. It's looking like the Colts may be looking to trade up.

You don't want to get into a bidding war with Indy for that #1 - besides, you don't know if they want the other guy anyway so your guy may still be there. And if the team trading to #1 takes a QB, Anderson will be available and you will still likely get one of the top 4 QBs at #12 or make a small move up to take one.
Or trade out of either pick to bank extra picks for next year to take a swing at Maye or Williams.

No trading war, but Texans may make an offer. The Texans may have missed out on Mahomes because they didn't make the attempt to make the trade.

Me personally, if we don't take Young, I like to see Caserio work the trades to move down and pick up additional draft capital.

Yep.
Get another high pick to take a big swing at Maye or Williams next year.

Four round simulated no trades mock draft:
2 Jalen Carter
12 Jordan Addison
33 Peter Skoronski
65 Hendon Hooker
73 Calijah Kancey
104 Tank Bigsby
IMO I don't see Skoronski as a ZBS guy (after theCombine we will know), and if Kancey last to #73 you got a steal. I would be very happy with this draft Texans drafted an LT with #12, the best WR or Edge at #33 and traded Tunsil.

It’s mostly about Medicals, confirmation of physical measurements, drills just check off boxes. Also one of the few times you get access to players to interview.

I'd love to see the Texans get consistent pressure from the front four. Kancey and Carter would go a long way in that regard.

I picked Skoronski because of value and who was on the board at 33.

Big no's on 1.2 and 2.2 (or is it 2.1?) A DT run stuffer at 1.2? Not in the lifetimes of 10 million suns. And a tackle at 33 that is iffy on scheme fit? Why the hell do we need a tackle at a premium pick? We've got two guys that we need to sign to deals.

And a milder no on 65. Hooker has upside, but he's a project player coming off an ACL. I thought we were over the injury history guys. I'd take him if he falls far enough, but you can't rely on him to ever be the dude. It's a total shot in the dark. Might go great, and might be a big zero.

I don't think the Texans and Ryans are after throwing darts at a dartboard with a blindfold on and hoping they hit the target. I would take Hooker as a potential long-term upside guy you can trade later after you draft your target at 1.2, and assuming he works out.

Give me B Young (or as a backup, Stroud). Young in particular could step on an NFL field tomorrow and lead his team. High level processor which is hyper important and also has a bit of a Mahomes gene in him - ok not the special arm talent, but he has the it factor I'm looking for. He's got the highest floor of nearly any player in the entire draft to me. That's the guy I want. If I'm Ryans, I'm pounding the table for this guy. If I have to, I'm trading up to #1 to make sure I get him. (thanks Lovie, you ^%#@!$&^). Quit playing around with the Mills of the world. Get your stud at QB and call it a day.

I'm all in on Jalen Carter. A fall back if we can't get Carter, is Mazi Smith.

I'm not an Addison guy. If we can't get Quentin Johnston at 1.12, I'm trying to get one of the top 3 or 4 Edge guys, and going for a WR later.

I don't think Skoronski makes it past the early 20's. With our 2nd round pick, instead of taking Skoronsky, if he falls, I'd take Cody Mauch, O'Cyrus Torrence, or John Michael Schmitz.

Like @Texian said, Kancey at #73 would be a big time steal, and if he is there, you run to the podium. I think Kancey goes mid 2nd round, and may not make it out of the 1st.

If Hooker falls to the 3rd, or 4th, I'd have no problem taking him. If you can't get Hooker in the mid rounds, I'd take a flyer on Jake Haener or Clayton Tune in the 5th or later, and maybe grab Tyson Bagent or Max Duggan in the 7th or as an UDFA.

I'm meh on Tank Bigsby. I'd be ok with taking him in the 4th, but there are several other RB's that I'd rather take in the 4th or later. I don't think he'll last until the 4th, but if he falls, I'm taking Achane. RB's that will be there in the 4th (and later) are (4th Round) Texas RB Roschon Johnson, UAB RB DeWayne McBride, Pitt RB Israel Abanikanda, (4th or 5th) Kansas St. RB Deuce Vaughn, Tulane RB Tyjae Spears, (5th or 6th) ASU RB Xazavian Valladay, (6TH, 7th, or UDFA) Northwestern RB Evan Hull, Fresno St. RB Jordan Mims, TCU RB Kendre Miller, and USC RB Travis Dye.

I am a huge Bijan fan and review many mocks and big boards daily. I've found only one that had Bijan ranked that high.. Drafttek and Feb 5th dropped him from 5 to 9. Interestingly they have him going to GBay at 15. If Caserio takes him at 2, I and I imagine thousands of others will protest.

I agree. If for no other reason that we got a great RB last year in the 3rd. And DP has the tools to be a multi-year pro bowl player and likely top 5 RB. What type of message is it to DP if we take a RB in the 1st at #2? Do we need a RB? The jury is out on that. We have DP and then some unproven RBs on the roster. I think we can easily get a RB in rounds 4 or 5 that will be what we need. Which is a change of pace, 3rd down, and spell DP for a breather. I don’t think we need a stud so to speak but just a "just in case" type guy. Someone who can carry the ball 5 to 10 times a game and catch a few passes on 3rd down. But most importantly give DP a few 1-2 play breaks per quarter. If DP was hurt, then there are a few 4th and 5th round RBs who could have a good chance to take up the slack pretty well.

I would love to see
CJ
Edge or DT
At 1.2
At 1.12 get an OL or D player (still wanting a Edge or DT)
2nd round grab either WR, TE or OL

Then go BPA in a position of need. Maybe even a DB.

I can’t disagree with anything you and Texian wrote. Johnson was gone by 12 but he’s the guy for me early. I liked the mock for value but there were players I wanted that were gone in the rounds I wanted them.
