For those trying to keep up with the Senior Bowl, rain has forced practice inside. It will limit media coverage so we probably won't get a lot of stuff from today. Hopefully NFLN can still find a way to air it

A few observations from the abbreviated NFLN Senior Bowl practice show today (1/23):

Penny Hart (WR, Georgia State) has TY Hilton/Tyreek Hill type explosiveness. I've never heard of him, but he's electric.

I really like the o-line class in this Senior Bowl. More polished than in the past few years. There will be solid guys into Day 3.

Speaking of the o-line, why is Dalton Risner assumed to move to G/C? He has enough length and quickness to stay at RT. Risner could bump inside, but it's not a given.

The best CBs seem to be press cover types. Rock Ya-Sin, Lonnie and Isiah Johnson. Don't see a corner in this game that could match up with TY. That's what I'm looking for in this draft class.

Carl Granderson is a bonafide pass rusher. If Clowney isn't signed long term, the Texans should consider this guy. May have to go in Round 1.

I didn't get to watch the practice today? How did Scharping/Dailey look?

You beat TY by pressing and being physical with him

I wanted to see that. But, it would also be nice to have a CB that could turn and run with him when he goes in motion.

TY absolutely crushed world class track athlete Adoree Jackson in their first match up before he got hurt. Speed would help sure, but I'm not passing on a better corner because the other guy runs faster

OT Risner not making a good impression at Senior Bowl. Saw this on WalterFootball.com:

Risner had a rough first day of practice. Along with losses to Collier, Oregon's Jalen Jelks made Risner look bad with a fast interior rush to get an easy victory in the one-on-ones. Team sources said Risner has not made a great impression on teams in the interviews. They like that Risner has a charitable foundation he is passionate about, but they also wonder how much Risner loves football. He is very enthusiastic to get into broadcasting and gives the impression that he would be fine if his football career ended tomorrow. Between that and his practice performance, Risner is off to a bad start at the Senior Bowl.

I’m praying to the football gods that we come out of this offseason with some quality press Corners and that the only reason we didn’t press much is because of lack of that skill set.

Also saw this on walterfootball.com Senior Bowl rumor mill that was interesting about the Clowney situation and what the Texans may do: http://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2019rumors3.php

You will have to scroll down a little to get to the part about the Texans.

Walter Football has been making things up for years.

They are a blight on the community, and it's weird that they stick with that atrocious late 90's Geocities looking web design.

I don’t know that it’s necessarily skill set versus age. I’ve read that JJo is technically sound, but he doesn’t have the speed anymore to keep up.

I’m hoping that when JJo retires that we’ll sign him on as a DB coach.

caught a little of the pass rushing 1v1s. Risner looked like he got worked again a couple times, McGrary from Washington looked solid however, as did USC's RT who they had lined up at LT. Can't remember his name

It's a shame you missed some of it. McGary is a big boy .... 6'7" 321lbs. He looks like he could be a player on the right side. I watched Benschawel - RG, 3 or 4 times this season .... playing beside David Edwards, (wish he were here this week), and he looked sluggish. He is playing at 6'6" - 307 this week .... as opposed to over 320 during the season, and he moves sooo much better. Risner was in the first - man on man matchup that Gruden was selecting and calling out, against Rennel Wren from ASU .... Risner won that one ! They interviewed kid from Missouri, Drew Lock, after practice .... not only does he have a big arm, he's got a big personality !

“Chuma Edoga of USC is likely the most athletic offensive tackle on the North team. Spending most of his time at left tackle, he has won almost every one-on-one pass-rushing rep this week, significant because it’s built for the defense to win. The long-legged athlete may have done more for himself than any other offensive lineman this week.

-To no one’s surprise, Kaleb McGary of Washington had another solid day today. After spending most of his time at right tackle, McGary split time as a left tackle on Thursday. Scouting Report: He was able to get his opponent on the ground on both sides of the line.”

Have you seen OT Dillard in any of the one-on-ones in this weeks practices ? He's made himself a ton of money this week, been very impressive, and he's gonna move up
the Draft Board of lots of teams after this week.

Amen ! I saw one on one an hour ago, or so, and he is very good, maybe at or near the level of Jonah Williams of Alabama .... which is saying something. I'm pretty sure he has moved out of our drafting territory !

Yea I think Dillard has worked himself into a top 15 pick if he tests well at the combine

I've been very impressed with both of their 1v1s pass rush reps. Edoga was suppose to be a late round pick, might have worked his way up to the mid rounds. I'd take McGary in a heart beat in the 2nd if we forgo drafting a tackle in the 1st

I dunno of course but still think there's gonna be maybe 2 or 3 OTs taken in the first round, that's it.
I think it's 4, if someone is drafting Jonah Williams as an OT.

Williams - Bama
Taylor - Florida
Little - Ole Miss
Dillard - Wazzo

I want an LT in the 1st and McGary in the 2nd and the OL will look much better.

Checkout the mock I put up a few months ago.

—Another big riser for the week is Washington State'sAndre Dillard. He's firmly in the conversation to be the first offensive tackle drafted if he can continue his strong predraft performances. Dillard has the size (6'4⅞", 311 lbs) and length that Alabama's Jonah Williams doesn't and checks the boxes as a very good athlete.

I dunno maybe it will be more like 4 as here's a guy who says Dillard could be the first OT taken in the Draft.
Now I'm not hearing much talk about Dillard or Little perhaps being better suited to play inside in the NFL but I've heard that in several places about Williams.

For those that watched the game, did any players stand out for you?
I have to finish watching the game later, but I thought Eric McCoy - C, Texas A&M looked great. Able to handle the inside power and had the quickness to get to the 2nd level. On the defensive side, Khalen Saunders - DT, Western Illinois was explosive and showed nice hand technique in getting off blocks.

I understand it's his "short arms" 34 1/4 inch but 81" wing is pretty good. I don't think any believe he would be bad at RT but better at RG. The corner to match up with TY is RS soph Byron Murphy and he can cover anyone.

I mocked Erik McCoy.....he's going to be a stud OL. Dang, I'd be really happy with the draft if the Texans could land McCoy (OC, RG or LG) and Risner (RT, RG, OC) since both guys are versatile and play the game with a nasty streak. That's win-win.

And that's what the Texans need. O-linemen that can come in and be ready to compete for jobs.

Saw this on NFL.com: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ryan-finley-among-five-stars-from-senior-bowl

The only O-lineman DJ mentioned was Edoga from USC. Said he was one of the most consistent players all week.

I guess the best thing about all the "good QB" talk is that it may push some of them up into the 1st round and that means a good OT or CB has a better chance of dropping to the Texans!

Edoga was probably the smoothest or one of the smoothest I saw all week in pass pro, which was really good considering he played RT at USC, but they had him at LT during the SB. His biggest knock is his character from what I'm hearing, his USC coaches didn't have great things to say about him, and a lot of scouts wonder how much he loves and how dedicated he is to the game

Senior Bowl seemed chalked full of 2nd day talent, which is not such bad thing for the Texans and reason why trading down only reinforces odds of adding quality depth and hopefully starters for next season.

First round talent for me included:

1. QB Drew Lock, a position where Texans are set and see little chance he falls to #23 to trade out for additional picks.
2/3. Montez Sweat and Jaylon Ferguson, both bring similar skill set to the table as Clowney, again doubt they fall to Texans.
4. Deebo Samuel, a multi talented WR with total package, would listen to offers but probably add him opposite DeAndre Hopkins
5. Andre Dillard, LT who could supplant Davenport day one and probably this boards favorite going to Texans but its so early that makes me nervous especially since its expected his stock will only rise through the combine.
Honorable Mention: Based off need and most likely available pick #23

Ben Powers, OG Oklahoma, showed well both in practice and game in Mobile, Cody Ford not in Mobile and expected to be taken early in the draft
Dalton Risner, OG/RT Kansas State, best suited inside but brings a lot of versatility to OL
Chuma Edoga. OT USC after Dillard I believe he would have best chance to start but on the right side if Texans elect to stay with Davenport

I think Lock is trash, but an NFL team will fall in love with him and he'll be a first rounder. I think he's behind Haskins, Murrary, and Jones. I think one of Jones or Lock will be available at our pick, giving us the option to trade out of the first.

With that said, I'd love to grab Dillard and Risner at the top. I'd slide Risner inside to RG. I also really like Hyatt as a LT in round 2 or 3 if we go CB with our first pick.

Agreed,

I dont think Hyatt at this point has the base strength/lower body to play LT as a rookie in the NFL. He does have the movement skills though.

I don't think he'd be any worse than Davenport. I actually think Hyatt would be fine as a rookie. He'll need a TE chip for some guys, but I'd rather try to teach the "get stronger/bigger" than the "become more athletic or grow longer arms"

I'm not sure why Mitch Hyatt keeps falling down folks big boards he looks good on film to me. He's a knee bender, moves his feet well, quick and athletic for a big man. The one knock on him I keep reading is that he lacks strength in run game, but I just don't see it. If he lacks strength, an NFL level S&C program will take care of that pretty quickly, maybe he can get on the special Cushing workout program.

He's been on my board for several reasons. I'd love to see NFL teams bite on that crud and have Hyatt be available late in RD3. Could be a steal.

Man, I'd love to see the Texans / Gaine find about 2-3 more Ickes for this draft.

I'd be fine if the Texans used one of our 2nd round picks on Hyatt if we got a CB1 in round one. Give me CB1 then either a RT or OG (Risner?) and Hyatt with the second second-rounder.
