2018 NFL Draft

Alright everybody... think we'll take any chance on the UT knuckleheads as UDFAs?

Hope so. Worst case scenario they get cut and cost us nothing.

Would also like us to bring in a RB and a back up QB.

Could be wrong but I think we will only have 7 UDFA's this off-season. (Barring any unexpected cuts)

Considering they didn't have a 1 or a 2 - I think this was a very successful draft.

Let's see if they get a gem or two in the UDFA haul.

Would be very happy if any of these guys go undrafted and Texans bring them into camp:

The UT knuckleheads OT Desmond Harrison and CB Holton Hill

LSU RB Darrel Williams

VA Tech CB Greg Stroman

Rice LB Emmanuel Ellerbee

NC State OG Tony Adams

Maine OT/OG Jamil Demby

Pitt OT Jaryd Jones-Smith

Leon Jacobs Wisconsin LB

Kendrick Norton Miami DT

Some good players still out there...

Phillip Lindsay - RB, Colorado
Akrum Wadley - RB, Iowa
Allen Lazard - WR, Iowa St
Deontay Burnett - WR, USC
Jester Weah - WR, Pittsburgh
Desmond Harrison - OT, West Georgia
Skyler Phillips - OG, Idaho St
Sean Welsh - OG, Iowa
Tegray Scales - ILB, Indiana
Holton Hill - CB, Texas
Quenton Meeks - CB, Stanford
Grant Haley - CB, Penn St
Brandon Facyson - CB, Virginia Tech
Trayvon Henderson - S, Hawaii
Quin Blanding - S, Virginia
Jeremy Reaves - S, South Alabama

No 1st or 2nd rd picks and got starters in Reid/Rankins. Finally got a slot that can play and upgrades the ST's.

Got 2 badly needed TE's, I like Thomas potential as much or more than Akins, but both have potential. Ejiofor could become a situational pass rusher next season and it's good to bring this guy home. The rest of the guys can contribute on ST's which has long been an issue with the Texans.

I would've gone a bit differently by adding 1 more OL in the 3rd over Akins. But overall if you look at adding 3 guys who can contribute immediately (Reid/Rankins/Coutee) TE's with as much potential as OD (Akins game reminds me alot of OD's) An underrated edge rusher and a couple of ST's guys.

I would consider this draft to be a solid B. I will give it a B+ since there was no 1st /2nd rd pick. It was about as good as we could've expected.

Some media analyst have given the Texans a pretty strong grade on their draft. SBT you're right, if this team nails 3 starters from this draft b/c of talent and not attrition Gaine and O'Brien should pop the corks for the job they did from a draft standpoint.

I attended the draft and it was awesome, however I did not see many Texans fans on the floor in the season ticket holder section, it was almost empty on day 2 and 3.

Oh, and one of the best moments was when they picked Shaquille Griffin, all the fans stood and gave a standing ovation, no matter what team they supported.

It was given plenty of time on air in seperate articles and repeated.
I just wish Texans had taken Armanti Foreman as well - those two are twins as well and although it may not have gotten the air time of the other two, it still would have meant just as much to the Foreman brothers.
I reckon it would have translated onto the field too.

Armanti Foreman wasn't even a good college player. I don't care who he's related to, He didn't deserve to be drafted. He's not a good football player. I want good football players, not just feel good stories.

This makes sense as to why certain prospects fell further than expected on draft weekend.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...-how-the-draft-really-went-down-what-it-means

...The NFL Scouting Combine is every year in late February and yet each season we have players fail the mandatory drug test in Indianapolis. NFL sources told me Holton Hill (Texas), Desmond Harrison (West Georgia) and Antonio Callaway (Florida) all failed the test. Each dropped in the draft because of it....

...And finally, this one is shocking. After the draft ended on Saturday—and even during our Bleacher Report live stream coverage—I was asking if Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was going to be drafted. Hurst was flagged at the combine for a heart condition but was later allowed to participate at the Michigan pro day. If the Wolverines felt he was healthy, why did he fall so far in the draft?

I spoke to over 10 scouts, coaches and executives regarding Hurst. One, in a heated rant, labeled the selection "irresponsible" by the Raiders because of Hurst's heart condition (which hasn't been publicly shared) and hoped the talented defender would "never put a f--king helmet on again in his life."

That sentiment was echoed many times over, with one head coach adding, "Only the Raiders would draft a guy who could literally die on the field from a known condition."

I don't get the stuff with Hurst. The condition was found when he was a freshman at Michigan so he redshirted. He was then cleared by both Harvard and Michigan doctors and played 4 years (at a very high level) without incident. He got flagged for it at the Combine and was sent home but then was cleared almost immediately afterward and was able to perform at the Michigan pro day. It's the same issue that Star Lotulelei suffers from yet Star was still drafted 1st round and has played 5 years in the NFL without issue.

Also, the one head coach complaining about the Raiders drafting him seems to have a huge issue with him playing through this condition but probably has zero issue with what happened to Ryan Shazier because "that's just football". If the condition was so bad that he could "die on the field" then he wouldn't have been cleared to play (twice) by cardiologists.

Only thing I can think is teams were scared off by what could possibly happen and the accountability if it was on their watch after the diagnosis. Bullshit to me, should Hurst live in a bubble? If he could die on the field he could die climbing a flight of stairs. Every other team is just spewing rotten grapes because they know the Raiders just got a elite player in the 5th round. Gruden knows what a dominant penetrating DT can mean to a defense, and he just landed two of the best prospects ever without spending a 1st round pick. Raiders d-line is going to be sick.

Who do you think had the best draft?

I really like what the 49ers did to help their team. The Mcglinchey pick was a reach until you see they traded Trent Brown and Mcglinchey is a better fit for the zone scheme Shanahan runs.

They got some toys for Jimmy G in Pettis and Richie James. Added some playmakers on D with Tarvarius Moore, Fred Warner and DJ Reed. Had some low risk high upside picks in Kentavius Street, Marcell Harris and Jullian Taylor.

I think they are a wild card team this year after these moves.

I like Tampa Bay's draft.

Rd. 1 Vea- put him with McCoy/Peirre Paul/Curry and the defensive front should be one of the best in the league.

Rd. 2 Ronald Jones- Homerun hitter, huge upgrade over Doug Martin

Rd2 Stewart- Fiesty slot CB, something the team was missing

Rd.2 Carlton Davis- I think he will start as a rookie, 3 yr SEC starter.

Rd.3 Cappa- I think he's going to start at RG as a rookie. Tough run blocker, An OL of D. Smith, Marpet, Jensen, Cappa,Dotson should be able to provide Winston protection and Jones is going to really like running behind these guys.

Rd.4 Whitehead- Has ability to become a starting S and will help improve ST's in the meantime.

Rd.5 Watson- Big, fast guy who will help on ST's as a 4th WR until he gets his chance.

Rd.6 Chicy- Tore his aCL but would have been a 2nd-3rd rd pick otherwise. Smart, tough, physical player who could run a little before the ACL.

They did a great job adding much needed toughness to their football team and fleecing the Bills for the two 2nds that they used to shore up their secondary. NFC South is going to be extremely competitive this season. And i’ll have my popcorn ready to watch!

Since Jeffery Wilson, RB UNT is from the hometown area I wish him well and hopes he become an UDFA success story.

The Broncos. Chubb should take pressure off of Miller, and they picked up all kinds of weapons for the new QB, Keenum. They're back in the thick of the AFC West race, if not the favorites.

Really liked what they did as well. Added the replacements for both WRs and a good RB along with Miller’s bookend.

Teams I think improved the most after the off-season are the Raiders, Dolphins and Buccaneers.

What about the teams that failed in the draft? I'm not sure if any team really screwed up. My biggest problem was with the Jets trading up from #6 to #3 prior to the draft. Yes, Darnold fell into their lap. But, they could have sat where they were and picked up Allen or Rosen and kept the (3) 2nd Round picks. Not worth the move, IMO.

Depends on how the QB's turn out. Rosen was my favorite QB in this draft. But if Darnold ends up starting for a decade then moving up was worth it. IMHO

Right now, it’s Rosen + Braden Smith + Darious Leonard + 2019 2nd round = Darnold. I think Darnold will be good, but the Jets would be better with Rosen and the extra picks. I actually think Allen will be better than all of them by 2020.

Raiders had the worst draft imo. Every pick was a risk it seemed. Like Gruden walked into the scouts offices and ripped up everything they had been working on all draft season.

PJ Hall was the best pick from their draft.

Hurst/Hall

Talented OT's that need to be coached up Miller/Parker

Talented but troubled guys like Key and Victor

There's risk to this draft. But I'm a risk taker.

But ending up with two OT's with great potential and two of the best penetrating DT's in this draft makes it a draft with potential to be great.

It will be a great draft if Key lives up to his massive potential and Victor can overcome his broken leg this will be a great draft.

Too many “ifs”. And disagree on potential for Miller/Parker to be “great”... I don’t say too many OL have potential to be great. Especially in this day and age.

From my POV Raiders looked to take risks just for the sake of taking risks. Aside from Hurst in the 5th there was comparable talent that was less risky at basically every pick. You are right that between Hurst/Hall they should nail at least one guy for the role of pocket collapsing disruptor to help out Khalil Mack.

I actually liked the Brandon Parker pick for the Raiders. I thought he was drafted a little early but he was solid at the senior bowl and has a lot of room to add on muscle to his huge frame. Him and Davenport could have fought it out at LT and the loser moves over to RT. I don't think Rankins can play LT. He will be battling for the RT position. That's why Parker was my guy. Drafting him means we potentially have 2 people to try out at LT. (Davenport and him) Now its Davenport or bust.

I wanted Parker at pick 80 but Raiders picked him at pick 60. Sheesh.

They got their guy that they had targeted. Similar to Texans taking Akins.

I dont know if they will be great, but they are 2 of the most athletically gifted OL in this draft. Miller was actually the best at the combine. These were guys that Cable can mold into what he wants to run the ZBS. They're perfect for a ZBS team.

I think Hall is vastly underrated and will be the best draft pick in this draft. Very disruptive.

Every year there is someone that just beats filling the biggest perceived need to death without a glimmer of actual intelligent insight. Drives me crazy.
Well, we have good centers and serviceable guards - which should be better without xsf, but our tackles definitely are a worry.
LT is the main protection for the qb and we are "hoping" we have one?
Not a good sign.
