2017 Senior Bowl

TexansSeminole

Hall of Fame
Senior Bowl is today at 2:30 pm EST on NFL Network.

Anybody that y'all are excited to see in this situation?

I'm interested to see how Marquez White from FSU does at corner. Also, Will Holden at tackle and Justin Evans at safety. Nathan Peterman at QB.

Also, Ryan Switzer at WR. I bet he's a top target in this game.

Wtching OL play McDermott got beat a time or two. But looked really well in the run game (Not noted as his forte) and was serviceable in pass pro. I think he could be a steady Winston type RT. Should be available in rd 3-4.

I only got a chance to watch the first quarter or so. Anybody that stood out from y'all's observations, other than those already mentioned?

Going by first quarter alone, I thought Peterman did alright for himself, although he missed an easy short TD pass over the middle. The North ran some funky plays. They ran a screen on their second play of the game when the rules of the game are that the defense can't blitz. That seemed like a wasted down. I watched Holden at guard and thought he looked pretty good.

Several OT suck.
Did not catch who beat who.

Cooper Kupp and Jones were the show.

Peterman and Webb are fine when not under pressure.

Beathard made another great throw, on the run being chased, back across his body.
WR couldn't pull it in though.

I think Beathard is a better prospect than many realize.
I'm tempted to move him ahead of Kaaya and Peterman...

I like Zay Jones better than Kupp. And I agree with 76, the edge rushers ate the OTs lunch most of the day.

Did you watch Iowa vs Florida? Brutal showing.

Unless I nodded off somewhere, they never tried McDermott anytime, anywhere other than OLT. I never thought, (today, this week, this year), that his feet were nifty enough for the left side .... I really wanted to see him on the right. However, I noticed at the weigh in, that Bisnowaty only had 32" arms .... they did put him at guard for several snaps, and he looked much more at home. Every lineman that jumped out at me was a center or a guard .... but .... Pocic, at 6'6" 310 is a good athlete and a competitor.

I wonder if Pocic could play RT. That guy plays with mean streak.

Yes, I did.
They have a version of an-hour game on Youtube.
Beathard injured his leg on a run near the goal line in the second quarter, I think it was a hamstring, but kept playing.

His first INT occured in the fourth, when a D-lineman his hit face or had an arm up trying to just as he released the ball.
The ball bounced up further down field off his first receiver; the second receiver tried to adjust to the ball and fell down.
The DB covering him scooped up the ball for a pick six.

The second was on him.
He was chasing toward the right side line and tried to make a throw across his body to the other side of the field.
Not sure if the injury hindered his strength or not; the ball didn't have enough mustard on it to get to the receiver, and was intercepted.
I could talk about the receiver, but let's go ahead on put this on Beathard.

The third INT happened when he was already in the throwing motion; his arm got hit from the blindside when a D-lineman overpowered a double team by the RT and RT. The ball fluttered and was intercepted. There was no way for a QB to prevent that.

He's been playing with 7 different starting line-up on the Offensive line for the year.
He also lost his number one receiver early, and his number one TE later.
That was why Iowa tried to run the ball more as the season moved along as the line can't protect him well enough.

The Hawkeyes play a pro-style, WC mix of offense, and Beathard played under center most of the time.
(This is a plus for a team like the Texans if they draft him.)

I had noticed at least two more INTs during the season when he was hit from the blind side, and one when the receiver fell down.
So, at the most, only 5 INTs were on him.
You can watch all the INTs from highlights on ESPN.com

He does indeed. He's athletic, intelligent, committed to winning the battle, has super intangibles, and perfect size. That is what I would look for, but I never played the line, on either side, and Mayock and company seem committed to small school kids. I wish I had an O line coach/player that I could discuss it with.

I watched the full game. He wasn't playing very well before the injury occurred. I'd have to watch more games but that game was brutal.

I was very excited to watch Beathard this year. I thought he was an intriguing prospect.

But he put some brutal games on tape this year. I mean like five games where he looked like garbage. Inaccurate, jumpy in the pocket, hesitant, no confidence. I'm not sure what happened between last year and this year but he regressed big time.

For the season, he was only a 57% passer and didn't even top 2000 yards on 300 attempts.

Going through 7 sets of starting O-line and all the shuffling in different games while missing your no. 1 receiver and TE doen't help a college QB.

I've watched about six games this year and I've seen quite a few TD passes dropped (and other drops).

He often got hit as he threw the ball, too.
That's why I'd rather not just based everything on simple Stat sheets.
Look up Russell Wilson's stats when he played in the WCO at NC St.
It wasn't until he got that big O-line at Wisconsin that his completion percentage jumped up tremendously.

It's a little bit different when Wilson is throwing 527 passes in a year and his team is without a single playmaker. I watched him all the time at NC State, saw him play in person. He made a ton of plays.

I'm not basing everything on stats. I just put the stats out there. Like it or not, statistics will always be part of any evaluation because it's the only part that is definitively measurable.

I'm not saying his deficiencies can't be corrected. I'm just saying that they exist. You can chalk them up to whatever you want but they are on film. He played some awful games this year.

He doesn't compare to Wilson at all. He was used as a game manager and was average or worse at it. Wilson was a playmaker that carried his team.

Tony Baker got offers from many major programs, including UT.
Owen Spencer; he's a big mis-match in the ACC.
I mean how hard is it when you have a receiver than keeps getting separation like this:

But he didn't even match Jarvis Williams, who was 6'4.
Both were named to the Binetlikoff award watch list.

The TE George Bryan is 6'5-265, another big mis-match.
He was a year ahead of T J Graham, who was drafted in the 3rd round by the Bills.
He had the most catches in his Sr. year when Wilson left for Wisconsin and Bryan graduated.

I wouldn't call that a bunch of nobodies in the ACC.

So what are the deficiencies you think he has so I know what to look for when I study his game film?

Is Beathard any better than say Savage? Not from what I've seen. He's a career backup, certainly did not look like a franchise QB from what I've seen.

I will admit that 76 has done a lot more extensive study than I have. I'm just basing this off of the games I saw and to be honest I didn't follow him that closely because he didn't jump out at my screaming this guy is a franchise QB.

so I went to the lease for the last weekend of deer season so didn't see the game. Heard Webb won MVP and most scouts said he had the best week of practice. anyone else see anything differently?

I listed them in the first of my posts that you quoted in this thread.
Alright then, thanks.
I didn't see quite the flaws you saw.
Some off-targets passes, yes.
I don't see indecisiveness, lack of confidence or Happy feet anything like that.

He's now in the Peterman, Webb, Watson group to me, at the moment.

Trubisky, Kizer, and Mahomes are top 3.

Kaaya and Liufau next.

More or less.
But I need to rewatch the game.
Seems like they got good protection and great plays by receivers, too, at first glance.

This must be the worst Senior class of QBs in NFL draft history. The guy who won the MVP looks like Osweiler on a good day. I'm serious, that's who I would compare the guy to. Romo and Cutler look better all the time.

2014 was our chance and we blew it. We had the #1 overall pick and went BPA yet still had the chance at guys like Carr and Garoppolo in the 2nd round and passed on it and waited until the 4th round instead. This FO is deathly afraid of pulling the trigger on a QB early.

Ricky could trade for Garappolo, but he wont.

He could trade for Matt Ryan too, but I bet he won't.

Matt Ryan isn't rumored to be on the market. (If he was I would give up 4 1st rd picks for him)

Jimmy G is rumored to be on the market. 1st and a 4th.

If he is on the market would you trade for Jimmy G? McNair/Ricky wont because they've already paid Os.

The 1st and 4th aren't even rumor. That's pure conjecture. Actually where is it even reported not just speculated that he is on the market?

You need to take into account thee man doing the speculating.

He also speculated about Mallett being traded and said the Pats wanted a 3rd for him. Said he looked like a franchise QB in TC. Speculated in the offseason etc... Lombardi carried the water for Belichick with Mallett and I'm speculating he's doing this same this time with Jimmy G.

Who would you consider to be valid when it comes to reporting this rumor?

I believe Mike Lombardi (who is close with Belichick and worked with him in the past) started floating rumors last month about Garoppolo being available. Recently Ian Rapoport reported it as well.

As for the price...I'm sure the Pats would love a 1st but that seems a bit ridiculous at this point. Schaub and Cassell were both backups and both fetched 2's and both had more extensive resumes at that point than Garoppolo.

Giving up a 1st & 4th for Garoppolo is overkill. That would be on par with the Cutler and Bradford trades and both those guys were multi-year starters when traded while JG has 2 career starts.

I believe Schaub only had two starts.

Is there anyone in the Texans organization that can scout QBs? Seemed like they can go back through old scouting reports and find a guy who gave good grades to QBs that panned out. Take his advice. If there is such a guy.

I believe Schaub only had two starts.

Twice as many pass attempts IIRC.

EDIT: Both Schaub and Garoppolo with 2 career starts after 3 years. Schaub with 164 pass attempts in 38 appearances and Garoppolo with 94 pass attempts in 17 appearances.

Which really proves the point that a 2 for JG is much more realistic than a 1.

Only Rick Smith could answer that. My guess is he's as clueless now as he was 3 years ago.

Schaub was 2 2nds which is equivalent to our 1st this year.

Actually Lombardi only speculated that the opportunity might be there to pull off a trade. He never predicted it would happen.
And he was very specific.
He said a Browns/Patriots trade is possible. So basically he's guessing.
That's not the same as saying Garoppolo is on the open mkt trading block.

Y'all have taken a postulation about two specific teams and stretched it waaaaay out.

Which ones have panned out since 2006?

I mean other than Aj McCarron :kitten:

Schaub was 2 2nds which is equivalent to our 1st this year.

A 2nd in the following year is equal to a 3rd this year, and based on the draft value chart a 1st is worth more than a 2nd and 3rd combined, so giving up a first this year would be pricier than Schaub.

510 (2.7) + 190 (mid 3rd) = 700 = pick 1.26

Sorry, I was off by one pick.
