2017 NFL Draft - 1st Round discussion thread

I give them HUGE credit for sticking their necks out. Because if it doesn't work, it's their jobs.

It was their jobs if they tried to roll with Savage. Between this and Romo, I think that the Texans had zero confidence in him. It was either do this or suck enough next year that you can draft Sam Darnold

We got mismanaged into this situation so ******* hard.

But "kudos" for trying to get out of it, I guess.

Now go get more picks so we can surround Twatson.

do you naysayers really think we could get there without a quarterback? hip hip hooray

You're talking like we just got an NFL proven winning QB. We just got a rookie that has some nice pros but some scary as hell cons and we did it at the price of our 2018 draft. We are still rolling with Savage this year so unless he goes down, granted the odds of that or good, then this magic bullet we supposedly got isn't going in the chamber.

I'm just hoping that getting picked as the third QB will cause Watson to play with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove like it did Brady.

If KC hadn't jumped up and took Mahomes, I doubt we would have done this. My second choice, but OK with it. Really wanted Mahomes.

So we swapped 25 for 12 this year AND our #1 (ideally a very late #1) next year.

Picks per the jump im ok with the trade value wise.

After that you either like watson or dont. Im happy and at least willing to give him a chance.

Now bump the offensive line. Tomorrow has to be ol.

Watson is a legit prospect I just think he's a bad fit for Obrien's broke offensive system. You have to turn a kid like Watson lose and Obrien is too big of a control freak to do that with his offense plus the lack of a quality QB coach to tutor this kid is a major concern for me.

Yes, correct. Smith cost us two first round picks and a second between dumping asswater and drafting watson...

Deshaun Watson better save the ******* franchise or they'll all be gone. I can't believe this.

I'm not knocking Watson, OK, I'm glad we finally got a QB. But damn. The cost is incredible.

So now, next year, we don't pick until the 3rd round? Is that correct?

Is it really that hard? You're really having this much trouble trying to understand what it means to trade away our first & second round picks of the 2018 draft?

If we give away our third to move our 2nd higher, we won't pick until the 4th next year.

If we trade our 4th as well to dump Savage, we won't pick until the 5th... got it?

I'm just f'king with you.

You guys are crazy. Since fat albert fell on schaub's foot (and really for our entire existence) the knock has been "We're just going to sit pat and we don't care about winning". Now, two years in a row we have made moves to address QB and we're still not happy. Sometimes I think people just want something to ***** about.

I really don't think O'b wants to start Tom Savage. He's worked very hard to not have to do so the last three years. Watson will start, he'll be named the starter by training camp.

We're going to hear the organization talk about how hard it is for a rookie to start in the NFL, but I doubt the plan was ever to start Tom Savage.

Didn't I tell you the Texans would pick the wrong QB? And I hear they gave away next year's 1st just to trade firsts with Cleveland now. God forgive them, for the fans won't.
Peterman was the best choice after Trubisky, and he may still be there at 25. Holy Moley, what an epic failure!

Definitely true. Most people don't watch these guys play, but maybe once, either.

Yeah, but IF he's the guy... if he comes in and gives us 10-15 years of top 10 QB play, or even higher... then it is a steal.

Are you saying we shouldn't ***** about the asswater experiment because the "front office tried"? Dunno about you but if I consistently **** up at work, my boss doesn't come in and pat me on the back and say "well, at least you tried."

Or we traded Watson for Oswilder .

To get a great QB, you always have to pay a price. Either go 1-15 or pay both your nuts and the tip to trade up. You can pray that you find a Prescott or Wilson in the later rounds, but ain't likely.

It's sad when the Browns from office makes you look like a fool...twice...

Vince Young and Matt Leinart won championships too...

And?

Bret Favre threw interceptions, so what? It's only part of the story. It's not like we traded next year's first to get Nathan Peterman. We have a guy "everybody" graded as a top three QB in this draft. Some rated him the #1 QB in this draft.

Sorry Houston is not Dallas so don't expect a Dak repeat. In a couple years I think we will be saying WTF did they see kind of like we said with Brock. Vince willed the Longhorns to a national title but was not a NFL QB. I think Watson will be better but he seems to me to be an athlete that is a winner but doesn't have the passing ability to be an average NFL QB. Just my opinion. I sure hope you all can find this quote midyear and throw it in my face.

This was destined to happen after passing on Carr and Bridgewater, counting on Romo was just a pipe dream.

A swap of 12 for 25 and a 1st next year isnt steep at all for a jump that big in the first round.

Look, we wanted a qb. It was going to cost us.

And we actually have one with a backbone and balls who plays best on the biggest stage. Maybe it doesn't work out but we took a shot.

I hate most of our trades. Im ok with this.

Doesn't matter Brian, AFC South Champions two years in a row. 4 of the last six years. One & done only once.

Save this franchise? This is the right track.... we've been on it for 7 years.

Watson is our Flacco

I'm saying that every QB is a gamble and the goal should be to figure out who you think has the highest chance of working out. Essentially you have to do a risk analysis and combine it with an opportunity cost. In this case, if Brock was the best shot at it last year and all it wound up costing you was average QB money for a year and a 2nd round pick to get out of it then you made a good deal. if Osweiller had worked out, it was a bargain. He didn't do long term damage to the franchise and no, its not a "well, at least you tried". If you can justify the risk then it was a smart move.

If you run a company in which failure always leads to firing then you will run a pretty mediocre company. Nothing is worse than a room full of decision makers who are scared to take risks.

You say that but at the same time if you like a QB, then you take him.

You can't just settle for whatever one falls for you, it's far too important a spot and picking the right one means your franchise's offense is going to be good for about the next decade.

I get that you gave up a first rounder. That's nothing if he's good. Nothing. Ain't no other 1st rounder that will have as big an impact
3rd year Juniors have an atrocious history of failure in the NFL. Before anyone brings up Aaron Rodgers, he sat on the bench with clipboard in hand behind Bret farve for 3 years. So in essence Rodgers was a 6th year Junior.

Exactly...Watson won a championship...and? Doesn't mean he's the next Montana...he may be rated top 3, but this is a weak QB class
