2016 Roster Moves/Transactions

Let's not kid ourselves. The O-Line is seriously about chemistry and continuity. They are a team within a team.

Ben Jones was getting better.

I'm just saying, I'm not necessarily calling foul right now; I'm simply a little leary about this move.
So how sold is Alex Mack on the Falcons?

Texans tendered RFA's John Simon and A.J. Bouye (tender is 1-year and worth about $1.6M).

Declined the tender on Eddie Pleasant but signed him to a 2-year deal afterward.

Declined the tender on Jonathan Grimes.

I hope not sold enough. I'm sorry, but I want a vet center who can call protections. No rookie center snapping the ball off to a rookie QB, or a first-starter, Savage, or even a very QB just learning the system.

It has to be a solid vet in my book.

No offense but that seems like an odd thing to say.
I'm fairly certain that virtually every fan understands that
sarcasm on my part. The team knows about negotiation during this short time period as do agents and players; so why not the fans that pay for all these ridiculous salaries?

I'm leery as well because I think Smith has completely mismanaged the OL over the years.

Well let's play devil's advocate here or just be as pragmatic as possible.

We have:

a hurt Lt
X @ LG
no center
no rg until brooks is signed
Newton's underperforming azz at rt

And no depth.

I could be overreacting or things could get out of hand very fast. Jones leaving may drive up brooks' price.

That's a good point. X has also been pretty underwhelming/inconsistent as well.

Hopefully he comes to camp in shape this year.

Ben Jones was replaceable during a year when our LT was healthy, our RG wasn't a free agent, and we had a little confidence in depth.

Right now we have problems.

Jones leaving as a singular act wasn't a big deal. In conjunction with our current ol? Not good. I shouldn't overreact to the loss of jones as much as i am until we see contract numbers but I would not want to be our ol coach this year.

Well the Pats did start a UDFA Andrews at C last yr.

I would be really happy if they re-signed Brooks and drafted Glasgow (My #1 Center) in the 3rd and Tuerk in the 4th. Both of these guys can play anywhere on the OL. Upgrades and great depth.

They did re-sign Clark and I'm really rooting for Q to make it back this yr.

Exactly! Not to mention there are several better options via FA.

Walter Football had him ranked 4th among FA centers. Brooks is ranked 8th among guards.

I agree, I wouldn't pay average money for Ben Jones, just saying... our OL shows how good it is on 3rd & short, and 4th & 1. Nobody deserves a raise.

Nobody.

Clark played well last year. I wouldn't hate seeing him at right OT and Newton at RG.

Why overreact? Our most known values on the OL at the moment are Sua-Filo and Newton. We're in good hands.

Tania Ganguli has reported hearing Filo.............as well as Quessenberry mentioned in connection with the center position. If any truth, there appears to be little forethought and great desperation involved.

This is interesting indeed:

NFL Network's James Palmer reports the Broncos have ceased negotiating with free agent Brock Osweiler since making him a three-year, $45 million offer "several days ago."
Word leaked of the Broncos' offer on Saturday, March 5, but it conceivably could've been made a few days before that. Breakdown in talks can be a typical obstacle in negotiations, but it obviously prevents any progress from being made, and that's particularly concerning for Denver with the beginning of the new league year less than 24 hours away. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that if Osweiler leaves the Broncos, he'll likely land in Houston.

LZ said that there's 5 centers in this years draft who are better or will be better next year than Jones and he could get a guard in the draft to replace Brooks . In other words , they weren't all that .

Nothing that CnD has posted gives me any hope for Q returning and having a productive career. His word is pretty much gospel for me.

Ben Jones deal is 4 yrs / $17.5M ($7.5M guaranteed). Makes him the 10th highest paid Center in the league or 14th highest paid Guard.

Should help cancel out acquisition fa cost supplemental picks of starting positional player, not named QB.

Ben only took over starting center duties last season with unusual high QB turnover so really hard to grade. More proven OG but that multiplicity paid off for him & wish him well!

X looks just fine at LG to me. He's developed slowly but that's the staff's fault for cross-training him at three different positions before he'd ever taken a NFL snap.

We need a Center obviously. This is the best year in a decade to draft one so we should be set there.

I'd like to get a RT that has LT potential. He could push Newton down to RG and eventually take over for Brown. There will be some of those guys available in the draft too.

I know that seems weird but some teams actually look to the draft to build their roster for the future instead of overpaying for FAs.

Bronco's sign Crick to a two year deal.

The Broncos saw defensive end Malik Jacksonsign with the Jaguars as free agency opened, leaving them without a key starter from last year’s defense and with a hole to fill up front heading into 2016.

They’ve added a player who can help them fill that void on Wednesday. The Broncos announced that they have signed former Texans defensive end Jared Crick to a two-year deal.

Crick was a fourth-round pick by the Texans in 2012, which means he joined the team while current Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and defensive line coach Bill Kollar were filling the same roles in Houston. Crick made just one start in his 31 appearances in his two seasons, but moved into a bigger role in the last two seasons.

Crick started every game in 2015 and 15-of-16 games during the 2014 season, making 104 tackles and 5.5 sacks while also forcing a fumble. With Jackson gone, he could remain a starter in Denver next season.

I'm guessing that Sanchez is now their QB1 with a QB to be drafted. No money left and needing to do something with Clady in order to be able to sign their upcoming draft class.

Crick leaving makes it all but official that DE is now in play @ #22. Good draft to go after 1 i suppose...I'd still like for them to get a WR 2 there though.

They only want to pay him $14 million over two years.

Kap would be nucking futs to take that deal. Not sure if he has a no trade clause in his contract.

He does not have a no trade clause. The Broncos are saying $7 and they don't care whether the difference comes from Kap or the Niners. The Broncos won't trade for his current contract (at least not this year of it) so that is his effective no trade clause.

He would not be nuts at all. It's a chance to start rather than ride off into obscurity. It's working with 2 QBs instead of for a defensive minded staff. They can do a deal that offers all the money back. That's what they did with Manning last season and he got it all back.

I'm not up on Denver's cap situation ( besides knowing it's currently bad ), but with it being in the shape it's in, how can they offer him a chance to make it all back? They are right up against it.

You do realize that Chip Kelly is the HC in SF, right? He's not even a cousin to a defense minded anything. Kap is a great fit for what he likes to do on offense. Denver is the more defense minded staff, with Kubes being Mr. Conservative on offense.

Denver can include some non-likely to be earned incentives (which simply means something Kapernick wouldn't have earned in 2015 when he only started 8 games). Even if he ends up earning every dime of the available incentives, it won't count against Denver's cap until the 2017 season.

CT got this one.

Brain farted that one. He is not known as a QB developer though and it's pretty clear they don't want to work with each other.

Without getting into the conservative thing...Kubiak is much better suited to rehab Kaep - good record of coaching up, QB friendly offense, won't have to carry the entire load.

Triggered payments don't go on the cap until after they are earned (generally).

Touche on Kubiak, but the cap hit for incentives earned would be on the 2016 cap, correct? If they can't pay now, they can't pay if/when he earns the incentives.

They'd go on 2017.

There have been 2-3 talking heads including Mortensen who have said recently Kaep should go work with Kubiak to get back on track. I get the bird in hand thing but sometimes you gamble that to get the flock.

How do monies earned in 2016 go to 2017? Genuine question,
I've heard a lot of the talking heads and I somewhat agree. Where I stray is on Kap's health. A healthy, fully functional Kap is an excellent weapon in Kelly's offense. That just made a light bulb go off in my head. A less than healthy, fully functional Kap would be > than a healthy, fully functional Schaub (based on athleticism and arm strength). Now can Kap read a defense as good as noodle arm?

As Champion mentioned the NFL divides bonuses into LBE (likely to be earned) and NLBE (not likely to be earned) and it's done off past performance (and some other factors iirc). LBE have to be accounted for on this year's cap (it's assumed they'll be earned). NLBE do not have to be accounted for this year (it's assumed they will not be earned), they are accounted for the next IF earned. Just a function of how the NFL does cap accounting.

Kap would have been a great fit at Oregon but he is not a good fit in the offense that Kelly has run in the NFL. Kelly looks for guys that can read defense quickly and correctly and attack downfield accurately.

Reading defense and accuracy are Kap's two biggest issues. I think he actually fits Kubiak's offense better. The boots and play action help the QB out a lot and take a lot of the mental load off of the QB. That's what Kap needs.

Absolutely agree. All the talking heads saying that Kap is a "perfect fit" for Kelly's offense are focusing 100% on his mobility and not on what Kelly asks his QB's to do within the offense.

Any possibility that Clowney will be playing defensive end?

I'm going all Johnny Carson here...I...did not know this. Thanks to everyone for the info.

Est. Cap Space (Top 51): $2,857,384

They have to do something with Ryan Clady (their oft injured LT; they signed 2 new tackles this offseason). He has a cap hit of $10M. Cutting him would be $1.2M in dead money so they'd get a good chunk.

They also need to sign their rookies. I believe that ranges between $4-6M. That money is not on top of the cap, it comes from within so Denver needs to do something with Clady before signing their picks. Plus the Kaep gamble. To me that means Clady is gone, maybe the $4M punter and/or some restructuring. Keep in mind that Von Miller is franchised at $14M for this year only. It'll jump a good amount if they franchise him again next year so they should be working hard to lock up one of the premiere defenders in the league.

Where did he say he doesn't want or care?

Im sure he wouldnt mind it, but if the deal is being held up because he rather have the money then he really doesnt want to be a Bronco. He has never come out and said it, but you can gather that he doesnt care about being a Bronco as much as he cares about the money
