Rookie watch...

Vikings

Round 1, Pick 11 (11) Trae Waynes CB 6'0" 186 Michigan St.
Pick Analysis: "If you're looking for a press cornerback -- and, trust me, Mike Zimmer loves his corners -- this is the guy. Waynes is very comfortable in press coverage. And, if you play defense at Michigan State, you're well-coached." -- Mike Mayock
Round 2, Pick 13 (45) Eric Kendricks ILB 6'0" 232 UCLA
Pick Analysis: "I think we can say with certainty that the Vikings like linebackers from UCLA. They drafted Anthony Barr last year and now they take Eric Kendricks. His instincts are outstanding; he can get through the trash. He will team nicely with Barr." -- Daniel Jeremiah
Round 3, Pick 24 (88) Danielle Hunter DE 6'5" 252 LSU
Pick Analysis: "This prospect was polarizing, positive or negative. There is no doubt he's a physical specimen with considerable upside, but he was nowhere near ready to come out of LSU. He still has to learn how to play football." -- Mike Mayock
Round 4, Pick 11 (110) T.J. Clemmings OT 6'5" 309 Pittsburgh
Pick Analysis: Vikings could look back at this pick in a year or two and realize how much of a steal Clemmings was. Injury concerns pushed him down the board but Clemmings has the athleticism to develop into a staple at left or right tackle. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 5, Pick 7 (143) MyCole Pruitt TE 6'2" 251 Southern Illinois
Pick Analysis: The 2-time FCS All American showed that his skills translated well against quality competition at the Shrine Game. He lacks the athleticism and size to stretch the seams but he can contribute as a move tight end in sub packages. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 5, Pick 10 (146) Stefon Diggs WR 6'0" 195 Maryland
Pick Analysis: Norv Turner should have fun plugging in this "swiss army knife" weapon into his offense. He has home run ability after the catch and adds value as a returner as well. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 6, Pick 9 (185) Tyrus Thompson OT 6'5" 324 Oklahoma
Round 6, Pick 17 (193) B.J. Dubose DE 6'4" 284 Louisville

Pick Analysis: The Vikings land a scrappy leverage player who needs considerable development into a specific role. Mike Zimmer has a history of maximizing the talents of his defensive linemen so this could be a player to watch down the line. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 7, Pick 11 (228) Austin Shepherd OT 6'4" 315 Alabama
Pick Analysis: Minnesota will love Shepherd's coachability. He's a fighter who won with effort against SEC opponents. His ceiling is that of a backup as he lacks special NFL traits. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 7, Pick 15 (232) Edmond Robinson OLB 6'3" 245 Newberry
Pick Analysis: Edmond Robinson is the first D2 player to be selected in this year's draft. He's a plus athlete with upside on the edge but there is alot of projection with this pick. --Mark Dulgerian

Steelers

Round 1, Pick 22 (22) Bud Dupree OLB 6'4" 269 Kentucky 6.1
Pick Analysis: "Dupree is a big, strong, fast, freakish athlete. He's a height-weight-speed guy. The one thing I don't like is a lack of consistency. He's explosive, big, strong and fits what Pittsburgh does defensively." -- Mike Mayock
Round 2, Pick 24 (56) Senquez Golson CB 5'9" 176 Mississippi 5.6
Pick Analysis: "Golson is a corner who is only 5-foot-8 and 176 pounds, but what separates him is his ball skills. He played minor league baseball. The question is, how much does size matter? Golson is one of the best pure zone corners I've seen." -- Mike Mayock
Round 3, Pick 23 (87) Sammie Coates WR 6'1" 212 Auburn 5.6
Pick Analysis: "This guy is pure speed. He's big bodied and takes the top off of zones. He is a height-weight-speed specimen. The only question is how natural are his hands." -- Mike Mayock
Round 4, Pick 22 (121) Doran Grant CB 5'10" 200 Ohio St. 5.4
Pick Analysis: The Steelers' defensive backfield has some gaping holes in it and they continue to address it in the draft with this selection. Like Senquez Golson, Grant is a cerebral player who reads and reacts quickly in coverage. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 5, Pick 24 (160) Jesse James TE 6'7" 261 Penn St. 5.1
Pick Analysis: Staying local with this pick, the Steelers find a large tight end with a similar body type and skill set as Matt Spaeth, their aging number two tight end. They likely see him as a developmental subpackage weapon for their 12 personnel (2 tight ends) sets. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 6, Pick 23 (199) Leterrius Walton DT 6'5" 319 Central Michigan 5.3
Pick Analysis: Walton has the traits to develop into a contributor as a 5 technique in Pittsburgh's odd front. He's a project, but another step in the right direction to get younger on defense. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 6, Pick 36 (212) Anthony Chickillo DE 6'3" 267 Miami 5.4
Pick Analysis: A player who has 5-technique written all over him, Chickillo is an excellent fit for the Steelers' 3-4 defense. He is athletic enough to stand up off the edge as well. His versatility will be an asset to a rebuilding defense. This is a great value pick and scheme fit. --Mark Dulgerian
Round 7, Pick 22 (239) Gerod Holliman FS 6'0" 218 Louisville 5.3
Pick Analysis: The theme with the Steelers' defensive back picks in this draft is instincts and ball skills. Holliman has plenty of both. Those are likely the two main reasons Pittsburgh took a chance on him late as he has considerable work to do as a tackler. --Mark Dulgerian

I'm glad football is back again. I'll be watching some of this game tonight on NBC. If I had to guess I'll go ahead and say the Minnesota Vikings will win. They have a lot of good young talent that figures to play more in a pre-season opener.

Heck, I'll even give my score prediction. Let's see how close I am to the actual score.

Vikings 23, Steelers 13

I'll predict the Steelers will win. They've got a more mature offense where Minnesota is probably reinforcing what they installed last season. Defensively, I know the Steelers have a new DC, but I still expect to see an evolution of their defensive packages with a seasoned group. Minnesota's defense is probably just as mature overall... so even though we'll see more of the twos I still expect to see Pittsburgh handily win this exhibition... 28-16

"Steelers a little disappointed with what they've seen from Sammy Coates... hasn't looked as fast as he was in college."

That college grabby doesn't fly in NFL for Trae Waynes. Two penalties.

Ryan Shazier is a tremendous athlete.

Coates is straight-line fast only. He's still a good athlete, but he is not quick when cutting or stopping and starting. And those hands are going to have to improve.

Like Playoffs mentioned, Waynes was extremely grabby in college and he is going to take a ton of PI penalties while he learns to transition away from that.

Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham tore his ACL, per @pittsburghpg.

Leaves Pittsburgh searching for a new kicker to do his job in tough venue.

Kickers trying for tackles in preseason games.
This brings up a question. If we know we're going with Bullock and Lechler, would we release Johnson early since he's likely to be waived anyway so he can take advantage of this opportunity?

I think the Steelers already signed someone.
